The Russian and Soviet imperial narratives tried to persuade us that Ukrainian culture is provincial. It is not. It is very global and is enshrined in many interesting topics of the wider world. In this episode, we delve into these trajectories of ideas. Hosts: Volodymyr Yermolenko, a Ukrainian philosopher, the chief editor of UkraineWorld, the president of PEN Ukraine, and Tetyana Ogarkova, a Ukrainian literary scholar, and author of the French-language podcast “L’Ukraine face a la guerre” by the Ukraine Crisis Media Centre. US military aid on pause: what’s next for Ukraine?
7 Mar 2025
ECFR
With the contentious Oval Office meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy, and the US announcing it would pause military aid to Ukraine, Kyiv faces mounting pressure. Neither Ukraine nor its European partners want the fighting to continue indefinitely – they want the ability to shape the terms of an eventual settlement. To do so, Ukraine needs leverage, and military assistance is a crucial part of that. What are the political and military implications of a prolonged delay – or a complete halt – in US support? Without US support, how can Ukraine still hold strong on the battlefield and at the negotiating table? And how can Europe step up to ensure Ukraine is not left without the “cards” it needs? Guests 🢒 Gustav Gressel, Senior Lecturer and Researcher, Austrian National Defense Academy and an ECFR alumnus 🢒 Jana Kobzova, Visiting Fellow, ECFR Leo Litra, Visiting Fellow, ECFR Chaired by 🢒 Marie Dumoulin, Director Wider Europe Program, ECFR

The humiliation of civilians is one of the widespread tactics of the Russian army. It uses starvation and deprivation as a war technique, and shells civilian targets when there are no military facilities around. We are discussing this issue with Catriona Murdoch, Vice-President of Global Rights Compliance. Catriona is an international criminal and human rights expert with over 13 years of experience. She leads the Starvation Portfolio at Global Rights Compliance, a foundation comprised of international lawyers and development experts with a mission to achieve justice through the innovative application of international law. Host: Volodymyr Yermolenko, a Ukrainian philosopher, the chief editor of UkraineWorld, and the president of PEN Ukraine. Explaining Ukraine is a podcast by UkraineWorld, a multilingual media outlet about Ukraine. UkraineWorld is brought to you by Internews Ukraine, one of Ukraine's largest media NGOs. One Week One Minute: We stand with Ukraine
28 Feb 2025
European Investment Bank
As we marked the third anniversary of Russia's invasion, we stand with Ukraine. In fact, this week an EIB-financed hospital and a school were able to re-open in Lviv. The Commission published its Clean Industrial Deal, including an important simplification of reporting, which is very welcomed as it will encourage green investments while reducing costs for financial institutions and companies. As the Climate bank, we will of course contribute to new initiatives, in particular supporting investments in grids, clean-tech startups and long-term contracts to reduce the energy bill of large industries and SMEs. In Cape Town, we participated in the G20 meetings and announced new investments for digital and climate in Africa. It is more important than ever to reinforce international partnerships and the multilateral network that has provided stability and prosperity for the past 80 years. We presented our 2024 annual results in Cyprus and new support for eyes laser and other medical technologies, film production, and green hydrogen. And we saw the impact of our investment in a health care and research centre in Belgium. And Next week, we hold in Luxembourg our annual EIB Group Forum so, do tune in to our channels! --------------------------------- Visit our website: https://www.eib.org Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EuropeanInvestmentBank Twitter: https://twitter.com/eib LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/european-investment-bank Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/europeaninvestmentbank/

We are accelerating arms deliveries, strengthening Ukraine’s economy and energy security, and integrating its electricity market with the EU by 2025. We have had several conversations about the ideas of this book before (in Kyiv and Kharkiv), and you can find links to the podcast episodes featuring these discussions in the description. However, this was the first time we talked about this book after its publication. We recorded this conversation on February 9, 2025, at the Sense bookstore on Khreshchatyk Street, in the heart of the Ukrainian capital, very close to Maidan. Several hundred people attended, with many staying despite the lack of available seats. Most of them were young. 29 Jan 2025
ECFR
After taking office, Donald Trump did not stop the war in Ukraine in 24 hours. Yet, there are high expectations that his administration will at least attempt a ceasefire in the coming months. Both Ukraine and the EU countries have been waiting to see the US strategy for the settlement and calibrate their next steps according to that. However, it is high time for Europeans to think about their own levers and how they can shape a future negotiation in a way that is more favourable to Ukraine’s and their own interests. What, in this respect, could Europe put on the table? What are Moscow’s considerations when it comes to settlement – is the Kremlin ready for a genuine negotiation which – inevitably – includes compromises? Is there anything Europe could do to narrow Moscow’s options and force a rethink of its war aims? IIEA
In her address to the IIEA, Lara Marlowe discusses her new book, 'How Good It Is I Have No Fear of Dying'. Her book recounts the true story of a Ukrainian female army officer, Lieutenant Yulia Mykytenko, who commands a 25-man drone attack and reconnaissance platoon on the eastern front of the Russo-Ukrainian war. Lt Mykytenko has survived artillery and aerial bombardment and human wave attacks by Russia’s Wagner militia. She won the medal for courage for leading missions into the grey zone between Ukrainian and Russian lines to retrieve dead and wounded soldiers. She has lost her husband, father and dozens of comrades-in-arms to the conflict. This is war as it is being fought on the edge of Europe in the 21st century, with high-tech weapons from muddy, rat-infested trenches reminiscent of the First World War, and where you can be obliterated by a two-tonne glide bomb or pursued and blown up by a whining drone rigged with a hand grenade. About the Speaker: Lara Marlowe is a Paris-based journalist and author. Marlowe has reported on more than a dozen wars and has won four press awards. She has completed three long reporting stints in Ukraine since the full-scale invasion of 24 February 2022 and continues to write a column for The Irish Times. She has reported for a host of broadcast and print media and was a staff foreign correspondent, based in Paris and Washington, for The Irish Times from 1996 until 2023. Marlowe makes her permanent home in Paris, where she has covered five French presidencies. She became a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in 2006 for her contribution to Franco-Irish relations. Marlowe is the author of How Good It Is I Have No Fear of Dying: Lieutenant Yulia Mykytenko’s Fight for Ukraine (Head of Zeus, UK, 2024 and Melville House, US, 2025), Love in a Time of War: My Years with Robert Fisk (Head of Zeus, 2021), Painted with Words (2011) and The Things I’ve See: Nine Lives of a Foreign Correspondent (2010).
