Before flags meant nations, they meant something else entirely: honour, rank, and sovereign power — and they were worth fighting for. PhD researcher Maxime Morel studies the cultural history of naval flags and ceremonies between 1500 and 1700. Through an anthropological lens, he traces how practices like gun salutes became charged symbolic rituals among emerging European powers. A missed salute was never just bad manners. It was an insult to the sovereign the flag represented — and that could escalate fast, into diplomatic crises and even war. His research shows these behaviours were rooted in aristocratic values of prestige, honour, and rank, operating not just between individuals but between states. The biggest problem is that they choose the lowest bid. That ends up being paid by the worker. Our taxes might be used to exploit cleaners through public contracts. But how does it work, who is responsible for this, and what can we do about it? In this episode, we follow the money. We expose how public procurement—the system by which governments award cleaning contracts—has created a race to the bottom. When contracts go to the cheapest bidder, the savings come from one place only: workers' wages, hours, and dignity. Letizia Mencarini is Full Professor of Demography at Bocconi University, where she is affiliated with the Department of Social and Political Sciences and the DONDENA Centre for Research on Social Dynamics and Public Policy. She is also a Fellow at the University of Wisconsin–Madison Center for Demography and Ecology. The EBRD and the European Union are helping young people in Egypt understand why water matters and how they can help protect it. As part of the Kitchener depollution programme, more than 2,000 students in Gharbeya, Daqahleya and Kafr El Sheikh have taken part in an awareness campaign on water conservation, waste reduction and pollution prevention. In Kafr El Sheikh, 600 children joined the Nilous Camp Adventures, learning through fun and interactive activities how small actions can make a difference. Together, we are supporting a cleaner, more sustainable future for communities near the Kitchener drain, because every drop counts.

DW awards its 12th Freedom of Speech Award to Hong Kong media entrepreneur Jimmy Lai. A prominent advocate for press freedom and democracy and founder of the Apple Daily newspaper, Lai has been held in solitary confinement since 2020. In early 2026, a Hong Kong court sentenced him to 20 years in prison after a two-year trial on charges including conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and publishing seditious material. “If we want to stop future wars, we must punish the states and their political and military leadership for starting them,” writes Oleksandra Matviichuk. In modern history we have only one precedent: the Nuremberg and Tokyo war crimes trials following World War II. Subsequent tribunals focused on war crimes but not the act of planning and initiating war. While Nuremberg and Tokyo were an essential step toward establishing accountability and justice in the last century, they have created the impression that justice is a privilege of the winners of a settled conflict. But justice is not a bonus—it is an essential human right. In May, 36 countries and the European Union committed to joining a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine. In this seminar, Hein de Haas, Professor of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam, exposes the importance of conceptualising migration as an intrinsic part of global change and development. Despite huge improvements in migration data and research, ‘migration studies’ has remained a strikingly undertheorised field of academic inquiry, particularly when it comes to understanding the nature, drivers, and internal dynamics of migration processes. A number of research biases and the concomitant lack of adequate theorisation and a common scientific narrative limit the ability to synthesise scattered insights into broader, more generalised understandings and, hence, to have genuine influence on public debates. To overcome the current theoretical impasse and misleading push-pull models, de Haas argues the need of a new paradigm on human mobility, namely, a holistic, long-term view that understands migration as an intrinsic and therefore inseparable part of broader social transformation processes rather than a ‘problem to be solved’ or a sign of development failure. In his talk, he conceptualises migration as endogenous to broader development processes leading to fundamentally different ways of understanding human mobility and migratory agency that belies mainstream public and also many academic narratives about migration. Hein de Haas is a sociologist and a geographer who has lived and worked in the Netherlands, Morocco and the United Kingdom. He is currently Professor of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the author of 'How Migration Really Works', published by Penguin in November 2023. The presentation combined remote sensing analysis, field observations, and UAV verification to examine how military operations have transformed forest landscapes across eastern and southern Ukraine. The speakers highlighted multiple forms of forest disturbance caused by the war, including shelling, fires, construction of fortifications, logging for military purposes and firewood, and illegal logging in occupied territories. The presentations also stressed the destruction of forestry infrastructure, research facilities, and educational institutions, showing that the impacts extend beyond ecosystems to forestry governance, science, and management systems.

Robic is the first certified AI-based social robot in Europe, designed to support people living with autism, dementia, and cognitive impairments. It was developed in Spain and first introduced in Colegio Gaudem as part of EDIH Madrid Region’s ‘test before invest’ service. Through a collaboration with EDIH Northeast Bohemia, Robic was introduced in a care home in Jablonec nad Nisou in the Czech Republic.
