Mountain warfare requires specialist tactical and technical training. A physically fit soldier does not necessarily mean they will perform adequately at high altitude. The body must adjust to thinner mountain air and needs to develop climbing muscles. The NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence in Slovenia runs courses for NATO Allies and partners to help their armed forces prepare for mountainous environments. To be able to operate in the mountains, soldiers need to be able to carry a lot of kit. In this piece, First Warrant Officer Sebastian Silar from the NATO Mountain Warfare Centre of Excellence explains what a soldier deployed to the mountains usually carries in their backpacks. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel https://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News https://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History https://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: https://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Receive NATO updates via email: https://bit.ly/NATOemails Find NATO on FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: https://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: https://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: https://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #Slovenia #WeAreNATO

Every army in NATO has its own field ration, commonly known as MREs (meals-ready-to-eat). While perhaps not the height of culinary expression, these rations give soldiers the calories they need to power through a hard day in the field. From Ally to Ally, their contents differ in small, interesting ways. Watch a Canadian and Slovenian soldier swap their ration packs at NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Latvia. There’s a lot of beef on the menu, from jerky to goulash and ravioli, with some Tabasco sauce on offer for that extra heat! Read the report: oe.cd/il/se-slovenia Slovenia has done a lot in the last decade to support #socialenterprises but can do more to build on its achievements. In Slovenia, social enterprises are important vehicles for work integration as well as for rural and regional development. Following Slovenia’s accession to the EU in 2004 and the EU’s social enterprise promotion in recent years, social enterprises have gained momentum and political support in the country. Nonetheless, several challenges are still holding back social entrepreneurship and social enterprise development, for example in areas such as access to finance or access to markets. The new OECD in-depth review Boosting social entrepreneurship and social enterprise development in Slovenia provides in-depth analysis of the country’s social entrepreneurship and enterprise policy ecosystem. It identifies the country’s strengths and challenges and provides policy recommendations and an action plan to help drive social entrepreneurship development further. NATO
Across Europe, NATO fighter jets are on duty around the clock, ready to scramble in case of suspicious or unannounced flights near the airspace of our Allies. NATO calls this activity Air Policing, which has been an integral part of NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence for 60 years. In Slovenia and the Western Balkans, several Allies – including NATO’s newest member countries 🇲🇪Montenegro and 🇲🇰North Macedonia – don’t have fighter jets capable of intercepting unsafe air traffic. To secure the airspace over these countries, other NATO Allies take turns leading air policing missions. In 🇸🇮Slovenia, the 🇮🇹Italian and 🇭🇺Hungarian Air Forces share responsibility, while in 🇲🇪Montenegro and 🇦🇱Albania, it’s the 🇮🇹Italian and 🇬🇷Greek Air Forces. In November 2021, the Greek Air Force assumed responsibility for safeguarding North Macedonia’s airspace under the NATO air policing mission umbrella. Footage includes shots of Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons, Greek Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons and Hungarian Air Force JAS-39 Gripens. In this series, we explore NATO’s five special air policing arrangements to ensure the integrity of NATO’s airspace and the defence of our almost one billion citizens. In Ljubljana, a central thoroughfare has become a new living room for the city. After a trial run that was designed in collaboration with local organisations and people, the city survey found that the new Slovenska cesta had 90% support to become permanent. The revamped street has something for everyone: there are trees to provide greenery and shade, public seating for those that need or want to take a break on their journey, tactile paths so the visually-impaired can get around more safely, bicycle paths and bus stops. An exhibition platform facilitates public interventions of all kinds, and an air quality display lets people see the difference that losing cars has made. On-street seating for bars and restaurants also helps stimulate the local economy.

As a way of celebrating cultural diversity at Eurojust, the Member State holding the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU is invited to offer a display of artwork at Eurojust’s premises in The Hague. On the occasion of the Slovenian Presidency, which began on 1 July 2021 and will continue to the end of the year, Eurojust has the honour to exhibit the works of three renowned Slovenian artists: painter and sculptor Nuša Lapajne, landscape photographer Jaka Ivančič, and illustrator and designer Marko Horvat. Nuša Lapajne’s series 'The Sea' nicely represents the value of togetherness, which is one of the mottos of the Slovenian Presidency, and a core value of Eurojust. Jaka Ivančič’s photography, which has appeared in many international publications and received a number of prestigious awards, illustrates the beauty and diversity of Slovenia. Marko Horvat is represented by a series of illustrations reflecting the captivity felt by many during the COVID-19 crisis but also feelings of optimism that are beginning to resurface as we prepare to return to the office. Eurojust is also grateful to the foundation Vrienden van Slovenië (Friends of Slovenia in the Netherlands) which was instrumental in selecting the art for this occasion. #JusticeDone #StrongerTogether #EUprotects #Europe ------- Eurojust, the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation, supports judicial coordination and cooperation between national authorities in combatting terrorism and serious organised crime affecting more than one EU country. MEPs raise concerns about Janša’s failure to appoint prosecutors to EPPO and attacks on the media
6 Jul 2021
EU Reporter
Prime Minister Slovenia Janez Janša attended the plenary session of the European Parliament at the start of Slovenia’s six month presidency. The presidency will focus on the timely implementation of the Next Generation EU stimulus package, on facilitating the adoption of national recovery plans and on the Conference on the Future of Europe. MEPs used the occasion to raise concern over press freedom in Slovenia and the failure by the government to appoint two prosecutors to the European Public Prosecutor’s office (EPPO). Janša said that he was sorry that there was a delay, but this doesn't mean that Slovenia is withdrawing from this mechanism: “Actually, we would like all member states to participate in the EPPO. We believe that this is a necessary mechanism for the good supervision of European funds and that it is in our common interest.” He said that the delays were due to procedural complications linked to the appointment of a new Minister of Justice and that prosecutors would be appointed by Autumn. Janša's government canceled the nomination of two prosecutors (to be approved by the European Public Prosecutor's Office) prompting the resignation of the Justice Minister Lilijana Kozlovič. In a statement, European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kövesi wrote: “The manifest lack of sincere cooperation of the Slovenian authorities with the EPPO seriously undermines the trust in the effective functioning of the management and control systems for EU funds in Slovenia. MEPs also raised concerns over media freedom, citing the Reporters Without Borders 2020 report where it reported that the Prime Minister’s party the SDS has: “Stepped up its campaign of smears and threats against journalists, both on social media and in media outlets, some of which are now owned by KESMA, the foundation in charge of a network of pro-government media outlets in Hungary. The high level of media ownership concentration in Slovenia is weakening pluralism and encouraging self-censorship.” Janša replied that journalists just didn’t understand the language and that they should not believe what they were being told. He said that journalists should come to Slovenia for a week, with an interpreter to see the attitude of the government towards the press. Ahead of the Slovenian presidency, Reporters Without Borders called on EU states to be vigilant with regards to any attempts by Janša to obstruct efforts to strengthen media freedom in Europe: “Ever since coming into power in March 2020, the Prime Minister Janez Janša and his government have shown disregard for media freedom. They have frequently attacked the Slovenian and international journalists on social networks, attempted to undermine the editorial and financial independence of the public television RTV SLO and arbitrarily suspended the funding of the national press agency STA. The critical media are pressured by the discriminatory distribution of government advertising, while Slovenia boasts one of the most egregious examples of abusive lawsuits known as SLAPPs filed, among others, by an individual with close links to Janez Janša. “An ally of Viktor Orban, the Slovenian Prime Minister has taken his country down the path of the Hungarian regime. This decline is reflected in Slovenia’s falling by 4 places to the 36th spot in the World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders in 2021.”

This episode of the “Stories from the Regions” series comes to us from Ljubljana, Slovenia, where you will discover the CrossCare Project supported by Interreg Slovenia-Croatia. Elderly people on both sides of the border can benefit from free health and social activities in the reassuring environment of their home. This is a good example of cross-border cooperation with the Slovenian experience serving to implement these home activities in Croatia as well. During the COVID 19 pandemic, the Health Care Institute of Ljubljana has made a programme of the occupational therapy counseling for elderly citizens of City of Ljubljana – the programme took place under the auspices of the CrossCare Project. The program is very successful and already helped many elderly people to feel safe during the COVID-19 situation. EU Environment
Is it possible to become eco-innovative as a small-to-medium enterprise (SME)? What benefits could eco-innovations bring to your company? We talk to MSORA - a Slovenian company that makes innovative wooden windows - about some of the preconditions for eco-innovativeness in SMEs, some of the eco-innovative ideas that they have developed, and how they made the step in this direction. Together SMEs make up over 99% of all enterprises in the EU, accounting for two-thirds of total employment. Though the environmental footprints of individual firms may be relatively small, their collective impact is much more significant. As a result, there is considerable scope to reduce environmental impacts in Europe by enabling eco-innovation in SMEs.
