For the first time, jets assigned to NATO’s Air Policing mission are flying out of Latvia. A detachment of German Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons are currently based at Lielvarde Air Base, where they’re tasked with ensuring the safety and security of the airspace over and around Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. NATO aircraft assigned to the Baltic Air Policing mission regularly intercept Russian aircraft when they don’t use transponders to identify themselves or fail to respond to hails from air traffic controllers, meaning they appear on radar simply as an unidentified contact. The Baltic Air Policing mission is led from Šiauliai Air Base in Lithuania, where the Spanish and Portuguese Air Forces currently have fighters deployed. An additional nation usually covers the Baltic Sea from Ämari Air Base in Estonia, but fighters are temporarily stationed in Latvia while the Estonian Air Force improves the runway. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel https://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News https://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History https://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: https://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Receive NATO updates via email: https://bit.ly/NATOemails Find NATO on FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: https://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: https://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: https://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #OTAN #SecuringTheSkies

Moldova: investing in a digital service-based economy
11 Apr 2024
European Bank for Re...
Moldova is building a digital and resilient service-based economy. Examples of this trend include extremely fast business registration processes (within one day), more than half of public services already digitised and a comprehensive agenda for a contactless economy. This session will outline the country’s economic progress since the pandemic and the start of the war on Ukraine. It will also present the case for much-needed investment and cross-border projects to prepare for EU integration and boost Moldovans’ quality of life. In 2024, the Moldovan government extended the state guarantee for Moldova IT Park, the first virtual business park in Europe, a platform that offers the best and easiest fiscal mechanism for IT and service-outsourcing companies registered in the country. The government also extended the types of company eligible to join Moldova IT Park. As a result, the number of IT companies and their average revenues have increased in the last four years. Moldova has also opened its doors to talented people from over 47 countries, without the need for them to first apply for a work permit. Local companies already provide outsourcing services in 14 languages. In addition to a thriving digital economy and skilled workforce, Moldova relies on industrial and food production. Despite being a small country, it produces 1 per cent of the world’s car components. It is also among the world’s top 20 wine-producing countries, top 3 plum exporters, and top 5 cherry exporters. Speakers: Dumitru Alaiba, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economic Development and Digitalisation, Government of the Republic of Moldova Natalia Bejan, General Director, Invest Moldova Agency Carolina Bugaian, Chief Executive Officer, Moldcell Veaceslav Panfil, Country Manager, Endava Giorgi Shagidze, Chief Executive Officer, MAIB

The reception that Moldovan President Maia Sandu faced in Bucharest, where she arrived for the European People's Party (EPP) congress, was clearly not as warm as she had hoped. Both Romanians and Moldovans residing in Romania took to the streets to protest against Sandu's policies. All of them are united by their stand against the current authorities in Chisinau.

NATO Allies Romania and the United States strengthened their relations with the Republic of Moldova – a NATO partner – through exercise Rapid Trident 2023, which was held in Moldova from 10 to 22 September. Troops from the US Army’s 101st Airborne Division, currently deployed to Romania, and the Romanian Army trained in land navigation, small unit tactics and combat casualty care, alongside more than 200 personnel from the Moldovan Army. Soldiers became acquainted with each other’s standard operating procedures, improving their ability to work effectively together in a crisis situation. Bordering Romania and Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova declared its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Relations with NATO started in 1992, when Moldova joined the North Atlantic Cooperation Council, a forum for dialogue bringing together all Allies and partner countries in the Euro-Atlantic area and which was succeeded by the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council. In 1994, the country joined NATO’s Partnership for Peace programme. The programme fosters practical bilateral cooperation and allows partners to build an individual relationship with NATO, choosing their own priorities for cooperation. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, NATO Allies pledged to help strengthen Moldovan security institutions and increase their resilience. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel https://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News https://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History https://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: https://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Receive NATO updates via email: https://bit.ly/NATOemails Find NATO on FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: https://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: https://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: https://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #OTAN #Moldova

CCB & WWF Offshore Renewable Energy Webinar: MPAs and Restoration
27 Sep 2023
Coalition Clean Baltic
WWF and CCB webinar: Can offshore wind go hand in hand with marine protection and restoration in the Baltic Sea? took place on 25 September 2023. The expansion of renewable energy in the region is a clear step in the right direction to reduce our use of oil and gas and address the climate crisis. In the case of offshore renewable energy, this is quickly expanding in the Baltic Sea, with many nations securing deals to introduce and increase projects for wind farm development in the coming years. How can Baltic countries live up to climate and offshore wind ambitions that are aligned and allow the fulfilment of commitments to protect our natural world? This year, the health of our marine life and the potential for offshore wind to provide clean and sustainable electricity and deliver energy security have been brought into sharp focus. Yet, what does research tell us about the cumulative impacts of offshore renewables on valuable and already compromised marine and bird life? How will efforts to restore the Baltic Sea to reduce eutrophication and face biodiversity loss be impacted? This webinar brings together experts from different sectors to explore the linkage between offshore renewable energy, marine protection and restoration. TREC is the first continent-wide project to study coastal ecosystems and their response to the environment, on scales from molecules to communities. The pan-European expedition is led by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) together with the Tara Ocean Foundation, the Tara OceanS Consortium, and the European Marine Biology Resource Centre (EMBRC), and collaborates with a vast network of European partner institutions. TREC brings together more than 150 research teams from over 70 institutions in 29 European countries. Scientists collect soil, sediment, aerosol and water samples, as well as selected model organisms and numerous environmental data. Their work covers different scales of life – from viruses and bacteria to algae, plants and animals – on land, in river estuaries, and at sea. In total, TREC will examine the biodiversity and molecular adaptability of life at the molecular scale at 120 coastal sampling sites across 46 regions in 22 European countries. https://www.embl.org/about/info/trec/ www.embl.org https://www.embrc.eu/ https://fondationtaraocean.org/ Credits Video producer: Lisa Vollmar Writer: Lisa Vollmar Senior editor: Andrea Capranico Footage: Lisa Vollmar Images and animations: (credit all contributors for images, animations; list EMBL employees first as X, Y, Z ; list external contributors afterwards with affiliation; also include paper citations like on the News website if images were part of a publication) Design: (include only if Creative Team provided project-specific input or support) Music: © European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

In the face of new threats from Russia, Moldova is looking towards a European future. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has uniquely impacted neighboring Moldova, as it manages both an influx of refugees as well as Russian blackmail and misinformation campaigns that seek to sow internal discord. Despite these challenges, Moldova's future is bright, says Iulian Groza of the Moldovan think tank Institute for European Policies and Reforms ( @institutulpentrupoliticisi118). After becoming an EU candidate in June 2022, Moldova is tackling the reforms needed to become a member state. The country needs Europe's support to withstand Russian influence and make the necessary reforms to tackle corruption and build a stronger democracy. Coastal touristic towns, villages and settlements around the Baltic Sea experience seasonal fluctuations of wastewater generation, leaving wastewater treatment systems insufficient in the summer tourism season. The new international project NURSECOAST-II aims to improve the health of the Baltic Sea by enhancing the small wastewater systems that are especially vulnerable to high seasonality. In this video, the project manager Ksawery Kuligowski, from the Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery Polish Academy of Sciences, is explaining the background of the project and what is planned during the project period. The NURSECOAST-II project is funded by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region 2021-2027 programme and co-funded by the European Union. The project will run from 2023 to the end of 2025. It includes 17 partners from eight Baltic Sea region countries – Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. New green spaces, cleaner water and better drainage, with EBRD, EIB and GCF support As Chisinau, Moldova’s capital, has grown, the river Bic has become polluted and is prone to flooding that affects local communities, infrastructure and the economy. Severe flooding is expected to become more harmful as a consequence of climate change. A €20 million financing package from the EBRD under its flagship programme EBRD Green Cities, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF) will help the city to rehabilitate the river and transform it into an attractive asset for its residents.

Coalition Clean Baltic
Coalition Clean Baltic (CCB) and WWF Baltic Sea Programme have developed guidelines to point to a way forward and much-needed recommendations to make this happen. But is ‘Nature friendly’ offshore renewable energy achievable given the pace of development and knowledge gaps around cumulative impacts? What do we need to do to achieve this? What kinds of risks does acceleration over nature present? On the webinar launch Guidelines for Planning Offshore #renewableenergy in the #BalticSea held on 31 May 2023, we invite panellists from industry, policy, NGOs, and research to reflect on these and other questions in the hopes of doing a reality check and reaching a better understanding of what needs to be done to find a sustainable, collective way forward. Economic Situation in the Baltics Episode II: Latvia's future as investment and growth region
4 May 2023
SME Europe
Latvia has been considered as one of the EU’s most advantageous hubs for foreign investment. Together with liberal economic policies and a developed infrastructure, Latvia plays a major role in making the Baltic region an important investment centre. Nevertheless, investors still point towards problems with the quality of laws that govern entrepreneurship as well as stability of the financial sector and communication with policy-makers. Geographical proximity to Russian Federation, after its aggressive invasion of Ukraine, is also perceived as higher risk and requires decisive political engagement. What are the prospects for Latvia’s greater economic competitiveness and of the Baltic region as a whole? What is needed for Latvia to continue inspire investors? These questions will be discussed during the upcoming virtual episode of our three-part Baltic debates collection, that you're most welcome to join.

On the occasion of the UNFCCC COP 27 (November 6th to 20th, 2022) in Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt), the 4 per 1000 Initiative: Soils for Food Security held the 5th 4 per 1000 Initiative Day on Wednesday, November 16th, 2021, in Namaa Bay. The International Initiative 4 per 1000, launched by France on December 1st, 2015, at the COP 21, consists of federating all voluntary stakeholders of the public and private sectors (national governments, local and regional governments, companies, trade organizations, NGOs, research facilities, etc.) under the framework of the Lima-Paris Action Plan (LPAP). The Initiative aims to demonstrate that agriculture, particularly agricultural soils, can play a crucial role in food security and climate change. Supported by solid scientific documentation, this initiative invites all partners to state or implement some practical actions on soil carbon storage and the type of practices to achieve this (e.g., agroecology, agroforestry, conservation agriculture, landscape management, etc.). The initiative aims to encourage stakeholders to transition towards a productive, highly resilient agriculture based on the appropriate management of lands and soils, creating jobs and incomes, and ensuring sustainable development.

Economic Situation in the Baltics: The Highest Inflation in the EU & the Impact for SMEs in Estonia

SME Europe
A country with the highest inflation in the EU, Estonia, the baltic tiger, laboratorium for innovation as a digital state is under pressure. What is the cost of the highest inflation rate in the EU being next door to Russia? Is it an alarming signal for the EU? Estonia has been a centre for the common European single market and a driver for business-ideas, especially for start-ups and digitalisation. The country where Skype was created, the start-ups such as Bolt, TransferWise etc. have followed… But now, the picture could change due to common challenges: According to inflation statistics, 2022 has been a painful year for financial markets following a worldwide increase in inflation. In countries where the food and beverage industries constitute a large part of the economy, the rising prices caused by inflation have influenced daily life and forced low-income consumers to reduce spending on other goods, thereby slowing economic growth. In Estonia it is a major concern for SMEs to continue their activities and threatens their survival. A new action plan for SMEs is needed. Questions which we want to tackle in our debate: How the energy costs have been influencing the producers and labour market? How do the Estonians feel it and what is their plan to survive the coming winter and coming years? Do solutions for SMEs lie in digital developments, personalised approach and finding opportunities for cooperation? We want to try a problem- and solution-oriented approach during the online luncheon debate to Estonian entrepreneurs, politicians and academics. Find here the recording of the session We are Europe - young Europeans discuss their Future 23rd October 2022 | Salzburg Congress Maka Botchorishvili, Chairwoman of the Committee on EU-Integration of the Parliament, Georgia Simona Cojocaru, State Secretary for Security Policy and International Relations, Ministry of Defence, Romania Franziska Davies, Historian, History of Eastern and Southeastern Europe at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich, Germany Vasyl Khymynets, Ambassador of Ukraine in Austria Vytautas Landsbergis, Icon of the Independence Movement of Lithuania, frm. President of State, frm. President of Parliament, Lithuania Lukas Mandl, Member of the European Parliament, Committee on Foreign Policy, Subcommittee on Security and Defence, Austria Katarina Mathernova, Dep. Director General Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy, Head of Ukraine Support Group, European Commission Rudolf Striedinger, General, Chief of the General Staff of the Austrian Armed Forces MODERATION Raffaela Schaidreiter, EU correspondent, Head of the ORF correspondent office in Brussels Russia's war against Ukraine has updated the discussion that started in 2014 about the possible accession of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. The attitude of the EU member states to this question varies. Especially with regard to the accession processes of the six Western Balkan countries, which have been dragging on for many years. New opportunities beyond full membership to participate in joint programs such as in the common foreign, security and defense policy as well as in the areas of research, energy, transport or climate protection are being discussed. In the spirit of a New Enlargement, a model is to be found that enables the countries to be closely linked to the European Union even before full membership. In any case, there is agreement that the three candidate countries will continue to consistently pursue the fulfillment of the criteria for democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as well as stepping up the fight against corruption. In this IRE forum we can expect an exciting discussion of the current situation between representatives of the European Commission, the European Parliament and high representatives of Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia. Fighter jets from the United Kingdom took part in air defence training over the Baltic region, seen here from the back of a C-27 transport aircraft. UK Eurofighter Typhoons and F-35s teamed up as part of Neptune Shield 22, a multinational maritime activity that took place in the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas. The activity saw a range of training drills in the air, on land and at sea across Europe. For the second time in 2022, the vigilance activity brought a US-led carrier battle group under direct command of NATO via Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO), allowing effective command and control of a multinational maritime force. It ran from 17 to 31 May 2022. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribeConnect with NATO online:Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepageReceive NATO updates via email: http://bit.ly/NATOemailsFind NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebookFollow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitterFollow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagramFind NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedinFind NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr#NATO #WeAreNATO
