CORDIS: Innovate wit...
Why is it so hard to find a vaccine that works well against placental malaria? Ever thought about the challenges of irradiating 300 mosquitoes a second! And how do the dynamics of replication play out in our bodies? Malaria is described by the World Health Organization as ‘perpetuating a vicious cycle of inequity’. Listen on to see how EU-funded scientists are working to understand and mitigate the disease. Catherine Merrick is professor of Parasitology in the Pathology Department at Cambridge University. She studies the human malaria parasite, aiming to improve our understanding of the fundamental biology of the parasite, and the impact of this biology on virulence. Lars Hviid is professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology, at the University of Copenhagen. His work has improved our understanding of how people gradually acquire protection from malaria, and furthered the development of vaccines against this deadly parasite. Hanan Lepek is the founder and CEO of Senecio Robotics. He works at the interface of biology and mechanical and software engineering, to create and deploy sterile mosquitoes on a large scale to reduce local mosquito populations.

'Georgians see what is happening as a deposition of their freedom, their future and in some ways their independence.' Today, Georgia's president, Salome Zourabichvili, addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg to discuss the political situation in the country. Protests emerged after the Georgian government decided to pause the country’s EU accession process following the disputed parliamentary elections in October 2024, in which the ruling Georgian Dream party claimed victory. MEPs rejected the outcome of the scrutiny and called for new elections after the findings of electoral violations, including documented cases of intimidation of voters, vote manipulation, interference with election observers and the media and reported manipulation involving electronic voting machines. From tribes to tropes: Network polarisation and false consensus around COVID-19 science with Dr Alexandros Efstratiou. The COVID-19 pandemic was marked by a slew of misinformation around vaccine efficacy, non-pharmaceutical interventions, appropriate prophylactic and therapeutic treatments, and more. Though much of this misinformation has been attributed to low-quality sources, scientific findings themselves may have been weaponised to this end. In this talk, we cover recent work showing that COVID-19 science was vastly misrepresented on the Twitter platform, owing mostly to a large misinformation cluster that engaged in selective citation of scientific papers. Alongside this false consensus, we analyze the temporal prominence of the pro- and anti-science clusters, and we uncover the adaptation of decades-long anti-vaccination tropes to the COVID-19 context. Alexandros Efstratiou is an incoming Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public (UW CIP). His doctoral work examined the dynamics of intergroup and intragroup polarisation on online social media, with a focus on how these relate to the propagation of misinformation and hostility in these spaces. As part of his research agenda, he also examines social psychological phenomena at scale, as well as metascience and science communication, using computational social science tools. His current research focuses on outgroup misperceptions and outgroup-directed misinformation.

Trans European Polic...
Enlargement policy is back at the top of the EU’s agenda after more than a decade. After the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, the granting of candidate status to Georgia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the launch of the Western Balkans Growth Plan, enlargement policy is experiencing a window of opportunity to overcome erstwhile fatigue in favour of tangible progress towards new members’ accession. Moldova and Georgia in particular show how Russia is actively counteracting the EU enlargement process, not only via its war of aggression in Ukraine and occupation of land in Georgia and Moldova, but also via interference in electoral campaigns. Question marks loom over Moldova’s and Georgia’s ability to fend off this interference as well as the EU’s ability to help these countries stay on the EU path. In this context, the Trans European Policy Studies Association (TEPSA) and the Policy Management and Consulting Group (PMCG) hosted the public webinar “Elections in Georgia and Moldova: What Next for the Accession Path?” on 8 November. The event took place online via Zoom. SPEAKERS: - Elene Panchulidze, Research Coordinator, European Partnership for Democracy (EPD); - Iulian Groza, Executive Director, Institute for European Policies and Reforms (IPRE, Moldova); - Giselle Bosse, Associate Professor and Jean Monnet Chair, Maastricht University; - Moderated by Mariam Khotenashvili, Executive Director, Trans European Policy Studies Association (TEPSA). This webinar reflected on the findings of TEPSA’s latest book “Enlargement and the Future of Europe: Views from the Capitals”, co-edited by Michael Kaeding, Johannes Pollak, and Paul Schmidt, and published by Springer. The book gathers over 60 leading experts in 41 European countries to examine how different national histories, policies, and corresponding public perceptions can influence engagement with the EU enlargement process. It is part of an annual series coordinated by TEPSA examining important European themes from national perspectives. To learn more about the TEPSA book, click here. Effective campaigns in support of LGBTI rights: How to avoid instrumentalisation and communicate without playing into polarisation? All over Europe and Central Asia, LGBTI people are used by different political players to gain power. Our opponents create and feed harmful and dangerous narratives about us and our struggles. Is it possible to communicate with our target audiences without playing their rules and not feeding into their narratives? To explore this topic, we invited three amazing activists to talk about their experiences. You can get the insights about the strategies used in Hungary, where Háttér Society used the so-called “anti-LGBT Referendum” to talk to their allies and in Spain, where La Intersession successfully campaigned for the rights of trans people and even prepared a guide: How we can change trans narratives collectively. Clarity, Community and Ownership – Empowering farms to successfully outwinter | AHDB
23 Jul 2024
AHDB
Join us for a sesion from Groundswell 2024. AHDB's Amy Hughes chairs a session on outwintering practices, such as bale grazing, are gaining traction throughout the UK, with farmers increasingly adopting these systems. Those implementing these systems are citing cost reductions, improved soil carbon management, and enhanced animal health. Despite these reported benefits, there remains a lack of robust quality, performance, and financial data to substantiate these claims. In response to this need, AHDB has commissioned an economic assessment of seven farms participating in the Innovative Farmers field lab in collaboration with Pasture for Life. This initiative aims to shed light on the impacts of bale grazing across various locations, soil types, and herd sizes. Through the lens of clarity, community, and ownership we will discuss the implementation of outwintering strategies, exploring what’s driving those farmers that are making it work. Panellists included • Emily Grant, an independent consultant and facilitator. Her business, Forrit, specialises in helping sheep and beef producers develop resilient pasture-based farming systems. • Angus Nelless farms in a family partnership located in mid Northumberland. The cattle and sheep are Pasture for Life and Organic certified. • Francesca Cooper is co-Director of Nunwell Home Farm, a mixed regenerative farm raising pastured pork and eggs and grass fed beef on the historic Nunwell Estate on the Isle of Wight. Principles of Clarity, Community and Ownership: • Clarity: Defining clear goals for farming businesses and the lives of those who run them. • Community: The role of knowledge-sharing among farmers, researchers and industry experts to collectively improve outwintering techniques. • Ownership: How ownership of their decisions can/has empowered farmers when they are provided with the necessary support, resources and information. Out with the old, and in with the new. Multiverse is a young group of architects specialising in post-industrial projects and breathing new life into old, abandoned Soviet-era buildings. Their latest project, Fabrika, is a case in point. Against all odds and doubts, they transformed an old sewing factory into a modern creative complex that hosts independent boutiques, start-up hubs, restaurants and co-working spaces. With support from the EBRD’s Advice for Small Businesses programme, we helped them improve their company’s branding and visibility, which boosted their market presence and gave them the opportunity to expand their projects. Thanks to donor support from the EBRD’s Small Business Impact Fund (Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, TaiwanBusiness – EBRD Technical Cooperation Fund and the USA).

What is post-truth politics and why is it a threat? How does post-truth politics interact with populism? Does post-truth politics play a role in political polarisation? In this TEPSA Explainer in collaboration with the RECLAIM Project, Maximilian Conrad, Professor of Political Science at the University of Iceland and Project Leader of RECLAIM, explains the differences and similarities between populism, political polarisation, and post-truth politics. He also explores how they feed off one another to present a unique threat to liberal democracies around the world. Quality of information is crucial to the functioning of liberal democracy, and as part of the Horizon-funded Reclaiming Liberal Democracy in the Post-Factual Age (RECLAIM) project, a consortium of pan-European analysts and experts are investigating the impact of post-truth politics on liberal democracy in recent years, and looking for ways to mitigate it. ------------------- 00:07 - What is post-truth politics and why is it a threat? 01:36 - How does post-truth interact with populism? 02:50 - Does post-truth politics play a role in political polarisation? ------------------- TEPSA Website: https://www.tepsa.eu/ TEPSA Twitter: https://twitter.com/tepsaeu TEPSA Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tepsa.eu TEPSA LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/tepsabrussels TEPSA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tepsaeu/ Editing: Hugh Evans Music: The Stratosphere, song by Adam Vitovský Funded by the European Union. The Effect of the Typicality of Lyrics on Song Popularity
23 Nov 2023
Oxford Internet Inst...
Although the evolution of listening patterns resulting from the advent of streaming platforms calls for a finer and renewed understanding of the drivers of song popularity, few studies have investigated the relationship between song popularity and the typicality of their lyrics in relation to a given canon. Using the set of songs that reached the top five spots of the UK Official Singles Chart Top 100 between 1999 and 2013 as our canon, we show that the more typical a song’s lyrics are as regards to that canon, the more weeks it will spend in the top five spots of the chart. However, this typicality has no significant effect on the highest spot the song will reach, nor on the speed at which it will reach that spot, nor on its trajectory within the chart. In this sense, we replicate and extend the works of North et al. (2020). We reached these results by using an innovative methodology to measure the typicality of song lyrics on several dimensions we identified, using dynamic and time-proof measures stemming from natural language processing research. Danilo C. Dantas is a full professor of marketing at HEC Montréal, where he is in charge of the graduate diploma in Management of Cultural Organizations. The e-Government Core Vocabularies are simplified, reusable and extensible data models that capture the fundamental characteristics of a data entity in a context-neutral fashion. Core vocabularies are a cornerstone element of semantic interoperability across public administrations as they provide a standardised approach for describing key concepts such as locations, businesses, organisations and natural persons. During the webinar we reviewed the issues raised on each respective GitHub page and discussed possible resolutions. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine is not only reshaping the security architecture of Europe, but is also influencing the EU’s position as a global actor. With rising tensions between the US and China, the EU will find itself in an increasingly bipolar world. The rules-based global order is challenged and strategic relations around the world are being redefined. Key states from the so-called ‘Global South’ are becoming more important for ‘the West’ in its move to isolate Russia and to address global challenges. The Annual Council Meeting 2023 took place on 7-8 June in Stockholm. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a turning point in European history. More than one year into the war, it is high time to go beyond crisis management mode and have a more long-term strategic look at how Europe can build the capacity and the global coalitions which are necessary to defend European interests in the world. The Annual Council Meeting 2023 in Stockholm will aim to offer both a very timely opportunity to discuss how Europeans have met the challenge of a war on its soil, and a strategic outlook at how Europe should handle the polycrisis of dire economic straits and global ripple effects as a result of the war. As such, the ACM will serve as an important reality check in which European decision-makers and opinion-shapers get to frankly exchange their ideas of the challenges and opportunities underlying this polycrisis. ---------------------------------------- Wednesday, 7th June 2023 OPENING REMARKS AND FRAMING Lykke Friis, Co-Chair, ECFR ECFR INSIGHTS: KEEPING AMERICA CLOSE, RUSSIA DOWN, AND CHINA FAR AWAY: HOW EUROPEANS NAVIGATE A COMPETITIVE WORLD Jana Puglierin, Head of the Berlin Office and Senior Policy Fellow, ECFR PANEL I: THE POWER OF CONTROL: ECONOMIC COERCION IN THE FUTURE GLOBAL SYSTEM Carl Bildt, Co-Chair, ECFR Arancha González Laya, Dean, Paris School of International Affairs Jim O’Brien, Head of the Office of Sanctions Coordination, Department of State, United States Jovita Neliupšienė, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lithuania Moderated by Jakob Hanke Vela, Brussels Playbook Author, POLITICO ECFR INSIGHTS: A CONVERSATION ON THE TURKISH ELECTIONS Sinan Ülgen, Senior Fellow, Carnegie Europe Aslı Aydıntaşbaş, Associate Senior Policy Fellow, ECFR ECFR INSIGHTS: TRIBAL WARS: THE FOREIGN POLICY OF A POLARIZED POWER Jeremy Shapiro, Research Director, ECFR PANEL II: FOREIGN POLICY OF A POLARIZED AMERICA: WHAT THE 2024 US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION COULD MEAN FOR EUROPE AND THE WORLD Alexander Soros, Chair, Open Society Foundations Alexander Stubb, Professor & Director, European University Institute Alexander Velez-Green, former National Security Advisor to Senator Josh Hawley Nathalie Loiseau, Member of the European Parliament Moderated by Majda Ruge, Senior Policy Fellow, ECFR ---------------------------------------- Annual Council Meeting 2023, Day 1 | European Council on Foreign Relations playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLk6xUL9_9MA-1_1MvS4Gxa8EZKKClXj0m https://ecfr.eu

The Polarisation of American Politics and Prospects for Expanding the Centre Ground
28 May 2023

Politics in the US has become ever more polarised and opinion polls show that American societal values are undergoing a period of accelerating change. Leading pollster, political consultant and commentator, Frank Luntz, discusses these changes and what is driving them. He also assesses the prospects of the political centre-ground in the US being rebuilt. Finally, he considers the possible candidates in next year’s presidential election and offers predictions on the likely victor. About the Speaker: Frank Luntz is among the highest profile political pollsters and commentators in the United States. His Instant Response focus group technique has been profiled on 60 Minutes, Good Morning America (on Election Day), and on PBS's award-winning Frontline. He has been a guest on most of the United States’ leading talk shows and he has written for The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Financial Times, The Times of London, and The Washington Post. Frank has also worked for more than 50 Fortune 500 companies and CEOs and is a past winner of The Washington Post's coveted Crystal Ball award for being the most accurate pundit. On March 7 and 8, thousands of Georgians took to the streets of Tbilisi to protest against a controversial draft law on “foreign agents”, which would require any NGO or media who receive over 20% of their funding from abroad to be included in a special registry and submit a financial declaration. Failure to do so would be punishable. Protesters argued this is a Russian-style legislation that would suppress freedoms in the country and hamper its EU integration path. The widespread protest against it led to the withdrawal of the draft law by Georgia’s ruling party. While the situation has stabilized since, the anger of the Georgians has deeper roots and reveals that the population is fed up with the political crisis and the government’s links with Russia. What are the chances for the people to influence Georgia’s path to the desired future? How is the government handling the reforms process for the EU accession process? What role does Russia play in Tbilisi? How does it affect the government’s stance on the reforms and war in Ukraine? The e-Government Core Vocabularies are simplified, reusable and extensible data models that capture the fundamental characteristics of a data entity in a context-neutral fashion. Core vocabularies are a cornerstone element of semantic interoperability across public administrations as they provide a standardised approach for describing key concepts such as locations, businesses, organisations and natural persons. The Core Vocabularies in question were the Core Person Vocabulary (CPV), the Core Business Vocabulary (CBV) and the Core Criterion & Core Evidence Vocabulary (CCCEV). During the webinar we reviewed the issues raised on each respective GitHub page and discussed possible resolutions. We therefore invite you to contribute to the discussion on the GitHub pages: • CPV: https://github.com/SEMICeu/Core-Person-Vocabulary/issues • CBV: https://github.com/SEMICeu/Core-Business-Vocabulary/issues • CCCEV: https://github.com/SEMICeu/CCCEV/issues More information on SEMIC's Core Vocabularies can be found here: https://joinup.ec.europa.eu/collection/semic-support-centre/specifications#:~:text=Core%20Vocabularies%20(CoreVocs) If you want to be included in our mailing list to be notified of upcoming events, please contact us at the following address emiel.dhondt@pwc.com.

UNFCCC stands for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Convention has near universal membership (197 Parties) and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep the global average temperature rise this century as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all three agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development. #Shorts #UNClimateChange

The attitude of the EU member states to this question varies. Especially with regard to the accession processes of the six Western Balkan countries, which have been dragging on for many years. New opportunities beyond full membership to participate in joint programs such as in the common foreign, security and defense policy as well as in the areas of research, energy, transport or climate protection are being discussed. In the spirit of a New Enlargement, a model is to be found that enables the countries to be closely linked to the European Union even before full membership. In any case, there is agreement that the three candidate countries will continue to consistently pursue the fulfillment of the criteria for democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as well as stepping up the fight against corruption. In this IRE forum we can expect an exciting discussion of the current situation between representatives of the European Commission, the European Parliament and high representatives of Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia. UN Climate Change
At COP 27, countries come together to take action towards achieving the world’s collective climate goals as agreed under the Paris Agreement and the Convention. Building on the outcomes and momentum of COP 26 in Glasgow last year, nations are expected to demonstrate at COP 27 that they are in a new era of implementation by turning their commitments under The Paris Agreement into action. The conference will take place from 6-18 November 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Heads of State and Government will attend the Sharm el-Sheikh Climate Implementation Summit on 7 and 8 November. A high-level segment primarily attended by Ministers will take place from 15-18 November. -- UN Climate Change on Twitter: twitter.com/UNFCCC UN Climate Change on Instagram: instagram.com/UNclimatechange UN Climate Change on Facebook: facebook.com/UNclimatechange The UNFCCC secretariat (UN Climate Change) is the United Nations entity tasked with supporting the global response to the threat of climate change. To decarbonize the automotive value chain, innovations that enhance the life cycle and circularity performance of the vehicles are needed at a faster pace. To support this decarbonization goal, ALMA, an EU-sponsored Horizon 2020 project, aims to develop a novel, lightweight structure (at TRL 8) for a battery electric vehicle that has lower environmental impacts compared to conventional design. ALMA project applies a two-level approach: 1) holistic eco-design of the novel vehicle structure and 2) adoption of circular economy principles across the entire vehicle life cycle. In the ALMA project, TNO developed a web-based sustainability assessment tool named BEVSIM, Battery Electric Vehicle Sustainability Impact Assessment Model, to evaluate the environmental, circularity, and economic impacts of the materials, sub-systems, and parts of Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) and Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle (ICEV) across the entire cradle-to-grave life cycle. BEVSIM can perform the following types of impact assessments: life cycle hotspot analysis, environmental impact assessment, circularity assessment, and economic impacts analysis (life cycle costing). BEVSIM allows the product designs, engineers, and sustainability experts to measure and compare impacts resulting from design alternatives, lightweight designs, material or sub-system choice, recycling technologies, end-of-life scenarios, and future scenarios resulting from changes in grid mixes. The presentation will introduce the ALMA project, its objectives, and share insights on the TNO BEVSIM tool which enables the adoption of Design for Sustainability (D4S) and Design for Circularity (D4C) in the automotive industry.
