Strongly held beliefs and clinical presentations can look surprisingly similar: resistant to change even in the face of evidence, and bound up with fear, identity, or a need to make sense of a confusing world.​ When people argue that rising immigration is part of a deliberate plan by political elites to reshape society and replace existing populations, it can be difficult to make sense of this belief. Those who hold this view may feel they are simply seeing patterns that others miss, and their certainty can grow stronger when they find others who confirm it. However, at a time of polarisation, misinformation, and rapid social change, beliefs do not emerge in a vacuum. In this 40-minute webinar, Professor Richard Bentall and Dr Almudena Trucharte explored the issue through an interview-style conversation. A compassionate conversation was opened about the grey area between extreme political beliefs and the kind of thinking sometimes encountered by clinicians. Across the remote islands of Fiji, access to reliable electricity has remained a critical challenge for healthcare delivery. To address this, the International Solar Alliance, with funding support from the Ministry of External Affairs under the QUAD Climate Initiative, successfully implemented the Solarisation of Healthcare Facilities in Fiji. The project involved the design, installation, and commissioning of solar photovoltaic systems integrated with battery storage across multiple remote healthcare sites, ensuring uninterrupted power for lighting, vaccine refrigeration, and essential medical equipment. Despite logistical challenges, inter-island transportation constraints, and remote site conditions, the initiative was successfully completed, bringing clean and reliable energy to communities that need it the most.

In 2025, Angola has gained increased visibility on the global stage through its presidency of the African Union and hosting the US-Africa Business Summit as well as the 7th AU–EU Summit in Luanda last month. In this seminar, Iuliia Lashchuk and Sabrina Marchetti discussed the intersection of irregular migration, gender, and labour exploitation among women from the former Eastern Bloc employed in Italy’s domestic and care sectors. Drawing on in-depth interviews with women from countries such as Ukraine, Poland, Georgia, Belarus, and Kyrgyzstan, the seminar explored how irregular status shapes their working and living conditions. It also addressed how, despite being perceived as white migrants, these women remain marginalised within Italy’s racialised and gendered labour hierarchies. Finally, the speakers analysed how policy and legal changes (such as Poland’s EU accession, visa-free regimes, and the Temporary Protection Directive) have influenced but often failed to resolve their precarious situations. In the run-up to COP30 in Brazil, it is an important moment to take stock of where we are at regarding the efforts to decarbonize air transport. Marie Owens Thomsen, Senior Vice President, Sustainability & Chief Economist urges participating governments to provide clarity on the airline industry’s path to decarbonization: 🔵 CORSIA is the first and only global agreement to manage CO2 emissions of an industrial sector. CORSIA is a global mechanism to tackle CO2 emissions from international air transport. Governments must unambiguously support its success and refrain from undermining it by introducing competing and duplicative taxes and charges. 🔵 Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is the game changer for decarbonizing aviation. Governments must support the production ramp-up of SAF with incentives and policies that clearly make it a winning investment. “At the 42nd ICAO Assembly governments gave us assurances of this clarity. Over the next weeks at COP30, we count on those same governments to demonstrate their will to enact policies that are consistent with their goals, provide the clarity that investors need, and take advantage of the opportunities that come in its wake,” argues Thomsen. The play is inspired by the real news that shook the Greek society on 12 September.2019, when a family's dog attacked their three-month-old baby in the presence of the mother who with great perseverance and effort managed to get her child out of its jaws. In La Lupa (she-wolf), two ordinary characters of today turn into tragic heroes: Eutychia (happiness), devastated by the loss of her infant, becomes ‘Nemesis’ herself for her husband Marcos, who decides to bring their wolf-dog back home right after the deadly attack that cost their baby’s life. Transcribing the myth of Procne and Medea – two ancient myths of infanticide – the play La Lupa is a fusion of fiction and documentary theatre that creates a contemporary tragedy. Georgia Tsangaraki joins Buzau International Arts Festival with a stage experience mixing humour, action and love, a contemplation of human life, a crime fiction thriller with elements of cabaret and dramatic comedy, showing the world that we are similar in our differences and humour transcends borders and stereotypes. Hotel Nemesis is a stage experience dedicated to human nature, meant to make us reflect on who we really are in life and relationships. The residency supports Tsangaraki's musical and dance theatre journey. Since late October 2024, Tbilisi witnessed daily mass protests in response to alleged electoral fraud, the passage of the controversial “foreign agents” law, and the disputed election of Mikheil Kavelashvili, a former footballer with minimal political experience. Many Georgians viewed his rise to the presidency as a consolidation of power by oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili, founder of the Georgian Dream party. In reaction, the government passed stricter laws, and security forces faced widespread criticism for using excessive force and surveillance tactics, including facial-recognition technology. Protesters, including journalists, were arrested or injured. In this video, our RE-ENGAGE communications officer reports directly from the ground in Tbilisi.

The COVID-19 pandemic was marked by a slew of misinformation around vaccine efficacy, non-pharmaceutical interventions, appropriate prophylactic and therapeutic treatments, and more. Though much of this misinformation has been attributed to low-quality sources, scientific findings themselves may have been weaponised to this end. In this talk, we cover recent work showing that COVID-19 science was vastly misrepresented on the Twitter platform, owing mostly to a large misinformation cluster that engaged in selective citation of scientific papers. Alongside this false consensus, we analyze the temporal prominence of the pro- and anti-science clusters, and we uncover the adaptation of decades-long anti-vaccination tropes to the COVID-19 context. Alexandros Efstratiou is an incoming Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public (UW CIP). His doctoral work examined the dynamics of intergroup and intragroup polarisation on online social media, with a focus on how these relate to the propagation of misinformation and hostility in these spaces. As part of his research agenda, he also examines social psychological phenomena at scale, as well as metascience and science communication, using computational social science tools. His current research focuses on outgroup misperceptions and outgroup-directed misinformation.

Enlargement policy is back at the top of the EU’s agenda after more than a decade. After the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, the granting of candidate status to Georgia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the launch of the Western Balkans Growth Plan, enlargement policy is experiencing a window of opportunity to overcome erstwhile fatigue in favour of tangible progress towards new members’ accession. Moldova and Georgia in particular show how Russia is actively counteracting the EU enlargement process, not only via its war of aggression in Ukraine and occupation of land in Georgia and Moldova, but also via interference in electoral campaigns. Question marks loom over Moldova’s and Georgia’s ability to fend off this interference as well as the EU’s ability to help these countries stay on the EU path. In this context, the Trans European Policy Studies Association (TEPSA) and the Policy Management and Consulting Group (PMCG) hosted the public webinar “Elections in Georgia and Moldova: What Next for the Accession Path?” on 8 November. The event took place online via Zoom. Effective campaigns in support of LGBTI rights: How to avoid instrumentalisation and communicate without playing into polarisation? All over Europe and Central Asia, LGBTI people are used by different political players to gain power. Our opponents create and feed harmful and dangerous narratives about us and our struggles. Is it possible to communicate with our target audiences without playing their rules and not feeding into their narratives? Join us for a sesion from Groundswell 2024. AHDB's Amy Hughes chairs a session on outwintering practices, such as bale grazing, are gaining traction throughout the UK, with farmers increasingly adopting these systems. Those implementing these systems are citing cost reductions, improved soil carbon management, and enhanced animal health. Despite these reported benefits, there remains a lack of robust quality, performance, and financial data to substantiate these claims. In response to this need, AHDB has commissioned an economic assessment of seven farms participating in the Innovative Farmers field lab in collaboration with Pasture for Life. This initiative aims to shed light on the impacts of bale grazing across various locations, soil types, and herd sizes. Through the lens of clarity, community, and ownership we will discuss the implementation of outwintering strategies, exploring what’s driving those farmers that are making it work. Panellists included • Emily Grant, an independent consultant and facilitator. Her business, Forrit, specialises in helping sheep and beef producers develop resilient pasture-based farming systems. • Angus Nelless farms in a family partnership located in mid Northumberland. The cattle and sheep are Pasture for Life and Organic certified. • Francesca Cooper is co-Director of Nunwell Home Farm, a mixed regenerative farm raising pastured pork and eggs and grass fed beef on the historic Nunwell Estate on the Isle of Wight. Out with the old, and in with the new. Multiverse is a young group of architects specialising in post-industrial projects and breathing new life into old, abandoned Soviet-era buildings. Their latest project, Fabrika, is a case in point. Against all odds and doubts, they transformed an old sewing factory into a modern creative complex that hosts independent boutiques, start-up hubs, restaurants and co-working spaces. With support from the EBRD’s Advice for Small Businesses programme, we helped them improve their company’s branding and visibility, which boosted their market presence and gave them the opportunity to expand their projects.
