The steps we take affect what we do to the web of life as well as what we do to ourselves. From this point of view, CERA Europe aims to prevent climate crisis, environmental pollution and habitat loss, to support efforts to protect ecosystems, to work on food safety and agricultural sustainability in an impartial and non-profit manner. In the face of these problems, CERA Europe carries out projects, research and training and develops local, national and international collaborations in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and EU Green DEAL targets.

The ambition of the project is to explore and foster the positive linkages between trade and sustainable development, to provide policy recommendations for the creation of new opportunities for agents involved in the global, regional and national agri-food value chains, and to define conditions for sustainable livelihoods of farm producers in the EU and developing partner countries. Trade is a central factor in shaping global, regional and local development. Increased trade, empowered by the growth of Global Value Chains (GVCs), has boosted productivity and incomes in many ;Trade can also contribute to food security, improved nutrition through diversification of food baskets and give poor farmers access to high value markets. However, if not fairly regulated, trade might generate increases in inequality and negative impacts on working conditions in developing countries, and compromise the environment. According to the recent World Bank Report (2020a), beyond policies to facilitate participation in Global Value Chains directly, complementary policies, such as labour regulations and environmental protection measures, are needed to share their benefits and attenuate any costs. Trade policy has an important part to play in achieving the SDGs.

The Centre Condorcet is a think tank which aims to stimulate Enlightenment core values of reason and humanism, inspired by one of its most innovative thinkers, Nicolas de Condorcet. The principal common project in Europe today, the European Union, may be in need of deep conceptual and operational innovation. The mantra that there are no alternative trajectories for managing common interests cannot be taken at face ; Many leading political and social scientists and economists have remarked that its dominant political and economic paradigms jeopardize the necessary social compromises in its societies. The fundamental consensus forged in the 1950s is fragmenting, a new one does not seem in the ; Indicative are the deepening inequalities within countries and between them, threats to the essence of democracy and civic rights, uncontrolled technological advances, neo-nationalism and eurocentrism, and alienation of large groups of citizens. At the end of the 18th century, Europe too was faced with deep social and economic shifts while political stagnation prevented adaptation. Then like now they are systemic problems which demand critical thinking, creativity and serendipity, and courage, as shown by ;      The Centre Condorcet has a double purpose: It will seek more attention for those thinkers who raise questions which may require the dominant paradigms to be re-evaluated. The Polish poet and diplomat Czeslaw Milosz analysed in the 1950s how European intellectuals became captive to system thinking and admiration of communism; others voiced similar concerns. It serves as a general warning about all –isms, to keep an open and critical, evidence-based mind. Why should centralising Europeanism and globalism, with their benefits, but equally with collateral effects, be an exception? The voices of contemporary intellectuals should be heard and enrich current debates about future social and economic arrangements in Europe.        It will serve as the platform for the independent tripartite High Level Groups for Policy Innovation. One such approach of re-evaluation started when the first group was launched by the EU’s Council Presidency in December 2011. Since then, they have developed into an original model for brainstorming about paradigm shifts in public policy. Their use of the Socratic method and the mutual belief of its participants in a European Common Good stimulate creativity and serendipity. Their independence allows them to engineer truly new ideas, free of formal and legal constraints, and to produce reports which can inspire a new generation of policies to deal more effectively with disruptive challenges that the countries and their Union are facing. Since the beginning, they have been served voluntarily by EPPA; ten years later, their expansion has led to setting-up a new home in the Centre ;

SAFE – Safe Food Advocacy Europe was created in 2015 out of a concern for public health related to food issues. One of the most influential factors of the EU’s food legislation is lobbying, indeed the large majority of EU legislation is influenced by lobbyists. There are more than lobbyists in Brussels, 70% of them are working for businesses, only 10% work for NGOs. Thus, SAFE was created to ensure that consumer’s health and concerns remain at the core of the EU’s food legislation. SAFE is the only NGO in Brussels focusing only on the protection and representation of EU consumers in the food sector. SAFE monitors the EU’s food legislation process and cooperates with EU legislators and its actors to draft comprehensive food regulations. Mission Strengthening the voice of civil society in the EU debate over food regulation, thereby reinforcing participatory democracy in the EU. Increasing public awareness of food safety issues, noticeably by organising training programmes and seminars designed to allow citizens to make informed decisions on the food they eat by learning how to read food labelling (additives, food colourings, MSG). Agriculture & Progress, a platform where the agricultural and primary food processing industry join forces for sustainable agricultural production.Integrated and innovative crop production techniques, including the use of plant protection products in Integrated Pest Management, have been used by European farmers for many years and are constantly being improved. These reliable and safe tools allow farmers to meet production standards both in terms of quantity and in terms of quality.Society is however, more and more critical and raises questions on agricultural practices. We have heard those concerns and are putting the platform at the heart of the debate, taking into account the demands and expectations of consumers. As it is clear that progress is needed in the safety linked to the use of plant protection products, we work towards ensuring the use of safe products for farmers, the environment and consumers. In that context, we work to improve practices to move towards a minimum of inputs while trying to continue to improve our sustainability. Farmers like progress and are ready to welcome new innovative techniques. However, it needs to be understood that research, studies, trials, implementation and the overall transfer of knowledge is a process that takes time and cannot be done overnight. The aim of our transversal, European platform is to provide society and decision makers in a pedagogic way with answers and suggestions on the needs and challenges of guaranteeing sustainable agricultural production and the important role of innovation in this context. Agriculture & Progress aims to establish a strong communication with civil society, local networks and the media.Confronted with bans and restrictions on the use of plant protection products and new breeding techniques (NBTs), the farming and primary food processing communities’ capacity to sustain production and to further improve competitiveness and good agricultural practices is jeopardised in the short and medium term. Our goal is to plead for the development of a solid regulatory framework that guarantees an appropriate adaptation, a balance between health, environmental protection, and qualitative agricultural production whilst guaranteeing an adequate level of income for the farming community.

Taalbubbels+ worked with small groups of low-literate mothers with children under 3 years old. The mothers simultaneously learned Dutch while receiving information and counselling on children’s care and upbringing. Between 2015 and 2020, the project reached 126 mothers and their children through 12 study groups. The feedback from mothers who participated in the program was generally positive. Many highlighted that it expanded their social network and interactions with other women and improved their self-confidence, especially in speaking Dutch. After the project finished, participants of Taalbubbels+ continued to learn Dutch, participate in leisure activities, seek employment, and perform voluntary work in the community. The project’s approach has since 2021 been anchored in the regular operation of partner organisations and became a blueprint for other cooperation-based projects in Antwerp. Taalbubbels+ is a part of the Atlas Dutch-language training centre. It was co-funded by the EU Asylum, Migration, and Integration Fund 2014-2020 and received a total of EUR 350 442. The successful integration of these mothers and their children in Antwerp has improved their individual lives and strengthened community bonds. This project serves as a reminder that migrant integration is key to promoting social inclusion and good relations across groups, contributing to more inclusive societies. Carbon Certification Schemes - 26 September 2024, Brussels (Belgium) What other regions or countries have proposals regarding public and private schemes to promote soil organic carbon (SOC) storage? How can they contribute to the ongoing discussions on the Carbon Removals Certification Framework (CRCF) from the European Commission? This workshop will give you an insight into what is happening in the United States and Australia and an overview of the context in the Pacific region and Europe. Organised by the ORCaSa project in the framework of the Soil Carbon International Research Consortium (IRC), this event is an opportunity for experts and policymakers to meet, exchange ideas, and make progress in the field of soil carbon policy. Moreover, the results of this workshop will be used to draw up a policy brief. Indeed, to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement on climate neutrality, to support the EU Green Deal and the objectives of the EU Soil Mission, Europe must coordinate its research and innovation efforts on soil carbon with international stakeholders and policymakers. Essential workers rally in Brussels for EU procurement reform
2 Oct 2024
UNI Europa
On 1 October 2024, 1,000 essential workers from nine European countries rallied in Brussels, demanding that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen act to improve pay and conditions for millions of workers through procurement reform. Workers, trade union leaders and members of the European Parliament condemned the “race to the bottom” caused by the EU’s current procurement rules, which prioritise the lowest price at the expense of workers’ well-being. “Over the course of my 20-year career in the European Parliament, I’ve worked for 11 different bosses, changing employer every 4 years. Today, I’m taking to the streets because my future is uncertain. We need stability and fairness, not a constant race to the bottom,” said contract catering worker in the European Parliament Najib M. The rally came one day after an open letter from over 100 leading economists around the world, including Thomas Piketty and Isabella Weber, calling for “a reform of the EU public procurement rules that strengthens collective bargaining and improves working conditions in labour-intensive sectors such as cleaning, security and food services”. Oliver Roethig, Regional Secretary of trade union federation UNI Europa said: “We know from essential workers about the pervasive low-wages and social precarity created by the EU’s current procurement rules. These problems are the same everywhere across Europe. They are caused by bad EU regulation and therefore need an EU-wide solution. That is why we are calling on Ursula von der Leyen to turn its promise of quality jobs, fair wages and good conditions into reality. We must reform public procurement rules now. Europe deserve better than a race for the cheapest price. Workers need wages with dignity, safe and secure jobs.” Find out more: https://www.uni-europa.org/news/essential-workers-from-across-europe-rally-in-brussels-for-better-pay-and-conditions-through-eu-procurement-reform/

Take a look back at our #RooftopREconnect event from September where we brought the good energy to kick-start the new political cycle in Brussels. It was great to be joined by Deputy Director-General of DG ENER Mechthild Wörsdörfer, Seán Kelly MEP, MEP Thomas Pellerin-Carlin, and MEP Benedetta Scuderi to one of Brussels' most iconic rooftops. 🌇 All parties are aligned. The energy transition is contributing to a competitive, prosperous Europe. It's now time to implement the good framework we have, and concentrate on the missing pieces: energy system flexibility and electrification! Thanks also to our co-organisers AVERE - The European Association for Electromobility, European Heat Pump Association, and RECHARGE – European Association of the Advanced Rechargeable & Lithium Batteries Value Chain, as well as our event partners EUROPEAN ALUMINIUM. In a recent chat, our Director General, Paul Voss and Marco Mensink, Director General at Cefic, talked about the importance and success of the Antwerp Declaration and the urgent need for boosting the competitiveness and electrification of European industries based on renewables. The Antwerp Declaration has become a powerful catalyst, uniting the EU around a common cause – securing Europe’s industrial future. The immense need for electrification and competitiveness is central to ensuring Europe remains a strong industrial hub. With energy and production challenges, especially in the aluminium sector, it’s clear that Europe needs to double electricity production by 2040. Together, across sectors, we are shaping the future of European industry, ensuring it remains resilient, competitive and sustainable 💪 ------------------------------------- Learn more about us: Website: http://www.european-aluminium.eu Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/EU_Aluminium LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/european-aluminium-association

employment Europe's essential workers RALLY in Brussels against race to the bottom
Europe's essential workers RALLY in Brussels against race to the bottom
24 Sep 2024
UNI Europa
Nearly a thousand essential workers – cleaners, security guards and catering workers – from nine countries across Europe will protest in Brussels to stop the “race to the bottom” on working conditions in their sectors. While the Covid-19 crisis underscored the critical role of essential workers in the functioning of our societies and economies, both public and private clients continue to view them merely as a cost factor rather than an essential investment in safe, clean, and healthy workplaces. Companies employing these workers often cut corners, overload workers, and jeopardize their health, safety, and well-being, undermining their dignity. The timing of this demonstration is crucial. The newly elected EU Parliament will have the highest presence of far-right, extreme-right and fascist parties since its inception. These parties seek to use the EU Parliament to divide workers based on nationality, religion, gender, and sexual orientation. Only the trade union movement has the power to unite all workers, regardless of their occupation, origin and identity. The Covid-19 crisis underscored the critical role of outsourced cleaners, security workers, and catering workers. Yet, both public and private clients continue to view these workers merely as a cost factor rather than an essential investment in safe, clean, and healthy workplaces. The workers demand a revision of the EU Public Procurement Directive, which Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced to take place in the next EU mandate, that includes social provisions in public tendering for all public authorities in the EU, such as that awarding companies respect a collective agreement with a trade union. This will not just allow EU member states to increase collective bargaining coverage as set out in the EU minimum wage law, but it will give workers and their trade unions the bargaining power to win better pay and fairer workloads across their sectors. Hydropower is the second-largest renewable energy source in the European Union, generating an impressive 375 TWh of clean electricity annually. But hydropower's strength lies in its unparalleled flexible electricity generation and storage capacity, a crucial asset to compensate for the intermittency of renewables. In this video, the @Eurelectric team visits the @ENGIEGROUP 's Coo pumped storage hydropower station, also known as the biggest battery of Belgium. During times of low demand for electricity, the water is pumped to the upper reservoirs. During peak periods, the water is poured into the lower reservoir via the machine room housing the turbines and generators that generate the electricity. In this way, the water is circulated between the reservoirs without impacting natural water bodies. Examples included a car-pool “speed-dating” session; a bicycle maintenance service to ensure that employees are not forced to handle maintenance issues in their free time; and discussions with a representative of the National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB) on transport pass options for hybrid work.

Food For Europe Podcast 40 - One country, two systems: eco-schemes on farms in Belgium
15 Feb 2024
EU Food & Farming
Belgium holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union until 30 June 2024. In this episode, therefore, Food for Europe is focusing on Belgian agriculture, and specifically on ‘eco-schemes’: measures proposed to farmers in the new Comon Agricultural Policy (CAP) to encourage an even broader adoption of sustainable practices. As agriculture is a regional competence in Belgium, Dutch-speaking Flanders and largely French-speaking Wallonia each have their own CAP strategic plans and eco-schemes – a unique situation in the European Union. Food for Europe takes you to the linguistic border of the country to meet Thomas Fastré, a Walloon farmer who is confronted every year with an administrative headache that is far from unique in Belgium. He shares his experience of one year of running eco-schemes, and shares suggestions to improve the system. At his side, Emmanuelle Escarnot, agricultural policy advisor to the Walloon government, explains more about eco-schemes in Wallonia and makes an initial assessment of their impact. Belinda Cloet, who is in charge of policy coordination of the Agency for Agriculture and Fisheries in the Flemish government, shows us a different Flemish strategy for eco-schemes, but one that is also bearing fruit. Jonas Lemaire, farmer and president of the Groene Kring trade union in Flemish Brabant, shares with us how eco-schemes have led him to adopt new practices, and echoes some of the contrasting opinions among Flemish farmers. Finally, Marc Blondiau, programme manager at the European Commission’s DG AGRI, discusses the essence of eco-schemes and the discussions underway at the European Commission to try to reduce the administrative burden on farmers. #agriculture #EU #CAP #CAPStrategicPlans #farming #farmtofork #sustainability#ecoschemes #Belgium #Wallonia #Flanders #GroeneKring

The EU is confronted with growing geopolitical, economic, social, and political challenges that threaten the achievement of the Union's energy objectives, namely achieving climate neutrality while preserving energy security and ensuring affordable energy prices. The EU already has a solid foundation in energy and climate policy, but its instruments are still too national, too temporary, insufficiently binding, and do not adequately contribute to the EU's objectives. The Jacques Delors Institute report “Energy Union 2.0 to deliver the European Green Deal” draws policy recommendations to address these challenges. EU Reporter
A range of speakers, from the world of diplomacy, politics, business and academia, praised the Belt and Road initiative while also accepting there had been some initial “doubts” and “suspicions”, particularly in the West, about the possible motives behind the scheme. The original Silk Road arose during the westward expansion of China’s Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), which forged trade networks throughout what are today the Central Asian countries of Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as modern-day India and Pakistan to the south. A keynote speaker at the event, Wu Gang, minister counsellor at the Chinese embassy in Belgium, told the audience (28 November) that his country was no longer poverty stricken but, rather, a “modern and prosperous society”. There had been a “great transformation” and China, he noted, was now about to enter a “critical stage” of its development. Turning to the Chinese president’s book, “The governance of China” he said it sought to address “four questions” about China, the world, its peoples and “the times” we live in.

L'agriculture biologique est en plein essor, dopée par l’objectif de l'Union européenne de lui consacrer 25 % de ses terres agricoles d'ici à la fin de la décennie. 📅 23rd August is the European Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Totalitarian Regimes We owe remembrance, truth, and justice to all of the victims. It is high time to commemorate the victims by building the Pan-Europian Memorial for the Victims of Totalitarianism in Brussels❗ The international competition for the design of the Memorial was started by the Platform of European Memory and Conscience under the patronage of the European Parliament President. The project “An Echo in Time” by British-Hon Kong architect Tszwai So was chosen. The Memorial will be a visible symbol of remembrance and, at the same time, a manifestation of truth about the past and a place to pay respects and give justice to the victims. At the basis of the European project lies the conviction about the need to overcome the experience of two totalitarian systems, and the Memorial is the way to do so. 🎬 We invite you to watch the message from dr Marek Mutor, the President of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience and Tszwai So, the author of the project “An Echo in Time”. 💡 The European Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Totalitarian Regimes was proclaimed by the European Parliament in 2008, as on 23rd August 1939 Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact was signed. The Pact divided Europe between totalitarian regimes and was the beginning of the war. It was the most devastating chapter of European history. ☝️It is extremely important to remember the past in order not to let it return. Preserving the memory of the crimes committed by totalitarian and authoritarian regimes is the only way to show that democracy and fundamental rights are not given but the result of a painful history. As a close aide to Michel Barnier, Stefaan de Rynck had a ringside seat to the Brexit negotiations. His new book, Inside the Deal: How the EU Got Brexit Done (Agenda Publishing), tells the story of Brexit from a Brussels perspective and charts the changing negotiating positions and obstacles that shaped the final deal. Mr de Rynck argues that the EU controlled the Brexit process from the outset. In his keynote address to the IIEA, which is taking place almost 7 years to the day since the original Brexit vote, Stefaan de Rynck explains his view that it was the EU, not Boris Johnson's Britain, that got Brexit done. About the Speaker: Stefaan De Rynck is a former Senior Adviser to Michel Barnier, who was the European Union's Chief Negotiator for Brexit. Previously, he was also a Head of Unit in various departments of the European Commission, where he has worked on financial service regulation, economic integration in the single market, regulatory standard-setting, and regional and urban development. He is now head of the European Commission's Representation in Belgium, and a visiting professor in European Politics at KU Leuven. He will speak as author of the book in a personal capacity. Rethinking Arable Farming in a Changing Climate | The agronomy of climate smart farming to deliver on the EU Green Deal As we look towards the future, it is clear that growing arable crops in a changing climate will be a dire challenge. However, it is also a challenge to which we can rise by reducing our impact and adapting to the new realities of our environment. That is why this May the 4th, 2023 we organized an exciting and inspiring event on the agronomy of climate smart farming to deliver on the EU Green Deal. Featuring a keynote address from leading agronomists in Europe, this event explored the state of play in irrigation, fertilisation, and integrated pest management, providing you with the latest insights and innovations that are shaping the future of agriculture. We looked into the productivity of arable crops in Europe, exploring how we can mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change while also addressing other social, environmental, and economic sustainability objectives. But this event was not just about theory - it was about practical solutions that farmers can implement today to make a real difference. The event highlighted the value of available integrated solutions that bring together different tools and practices to increase the climate and sustainability performance of farmers' integrated crop management (ICM) systems. The debate also focused on the importance of inclusivity to all farmers through ICM-system neutrality, appreciating diversity in systems such as organic, conventional, regenerative, conservation, and agroecological. The event was organised by the European Landowners Organization, together with Bayer, Yara, and Netafim.

Collections of Ghent  is Ghent's shortlisted entry to the Eurocities Awards. CoGhent explores the potential of digitised cultural heritage for promoting social cohesion and inclusion at the urban level and does so on a co-creative and participatory basis. Together with local people and five cultural heritage institutions in the city, CoGhent is building a diverse collection consisting of archival material, museum objects and digitised material from locals themselves.  -- With Eurocities, it’s all in our name: we connect Europe and cities. We do this by networking almost 200 larger European cities, which together represent some 130 million people across 38 countries, and by gathering evidence of how policy making impacts on people to inspire other cities and EU decision makers.
