What's in the kit of a Latvian special forces’ dog handling team? Rejs is a Belgian Malinois currently serving with the Latvian army’s Special Operations Forces. During missions, as a combat assault canine, Rejs helps Latvian commandos by sniffing out explosive traps, chasing down high-value targets and using his incredible speed and agility to get the jump on foes. Rejs requires a lot of kit to do his job, which is carried by his handler, a Latvian Special Forces operator. In this piece, we get to see the items the dog handling team carries in their backpack – from a dog bowl to a muzzle. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel https://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News https://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History https://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: https://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Receive NATO updates via email: https://bit.ly/NATOemails Find NATO on FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: https://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: https://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: https://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #OTAN #WeAreNATO

We supported energy efficiency projects and the upgrade of Riga’s water and wastewater facilities. We have helped bring sustainable growth to the tourism and agricultural sectors, and supported thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises, while simultaneously promoting the country’s green transition. We helped municipalities become more modern and environmentally friendly. In Riga, our financing also supported new public transport. Riga in the spotlight: About the urban challenges of a small capital city

Energy Cities
What is it like to be the young director of a capital city’s energy agency? I found some answers when talking with Janiks Ikaunieks. Janis leads the Riga Energy Agency in Latvia since 2 years. He told us how his agency is tackling the city’s challenges, which spots help him relax and why innovation is not always the first thing to do. Riga is known for its wooden buildings, art nouveau architecture and medieval Old Town. But the city leaders look towards the future: Riga is one of 10 pilot cities who are developing and implementing pathways and scenarios towards climate neutrality within the EUCityCalc project. The EUCityCalc project supports cities in data-driven decision-making: With funding from the EU Horizon 2020 program, the project will release the European City Calculator webtool. This is an open-source instrument with which cities can plan their measures to bring CO2 emissions down to zero.

Latvia has been considered as one of the EU’s most advantageous hubs for foreign investment. Together with liberal economic policies and a developed infrastructure, Latvia plays a major role in making the Baltic region an important investment centre. Nevertheless, investors still point towards problems with the quality of laws that govern entrepreneurship as well as stability of the financial sector and communication with policy-makers. Geographical proximity to Russian Federation, after its aggressive invasion of Ukraine, is also perceived as higher risk and requires decisive political engagement. What are the prospects for Latvia’s greater economic competitiveness and of the Baltic region as a whole? What is needed for Latvia to continue inspire investors? These questions will be discussed during the upcoming virtual episode of our three-part Baltic debates collection, that you're most welcome to join.

The mountainous region of Western Macedonia in #Greece used to supply more than 50% of the country's total energy production, but all lignite mines are scheduled to close by 2028, which could lead to unemployment and a decrease in the area's economy. One possible new source of revenue is #smartfarming and clean energy production. The EUA Autonomy Scorecard is a comprehensive tool that gathers, monitors, and compares system-level data regarding university autonomy across Europe since 2010. Over the years, it has contributed to various national policy debates with regard to university autonomy and the exchange of good practices. The fourth edition of the Autonomy Scorecard, to be published in 2023, presents data from 35 European higher education systems, making it the most comprehensive and overarching report of its kind. In this video, Agnese Rusakova, Expert of the Latvian Rectors’ council, highlights the benefits of using evidence-based data and cross-country comparison to inform policy reforms and discussions around institutional autonomy. The series of videos have been created to explore the application of the EUA Autonomy Scorecard in Ireland, Latvia, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden, providing valuable insights into the practical impact of the scorecard. One of Lithuania’s largest military exercises, Iron Wolf, saw nine NATO Allies – Belgium, Czechia, Germany, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States – gather for intense training at Pabrade Training Ground, Lithuania. The exercise, which involved more than 3,500 troops, and armoured vehicles including German Leopard 2 tanks, tested the ability of the Lithuanian Army’s Iron Wolf Brigade to carry out defensive operations and counter-attacks. NATO’s German-led multinational battlegroup participated, as did a US Army battalion assigned to Lithuania on a rotational basis. The exercise was also an opportunity for troops from various Allies to hone their skills and ability to work together, as well as testing their readiness to defend NATO’s eastern flank, if required. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribeConnect with NATO online:Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepageReceive NATO updates via email: http://bit.ly/NATOemailsFind NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebookFollow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitterFollow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagramFind NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedinFind NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr#NATO #WeAreNATO #Lithuania

The US Army deployed advanced rocket artillery to Latvia as part of a multinational exercise. The M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, arrived in Latvia on 26 September to participate in Exercise Silver Arrow 22. The launchers were flown from Germany to Latvia by US Air Force MC-130J Commando II transport aircraft based in the United Kingdom. Exercise Silver Arrow 22 ran from 19 to 30 September 2022. The HIMARS system gives NATO the ability to conduct powerful long-range precision strikes, and the US Army regularly deploys the system to the Baltics to train alongside NATO Allies. In recent years, US Special Operations Command Europe (US SOCEUR) has practised rapidly deploying the system via the UK-based Commando II transports. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribeConnect with NATO online:Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepageReceive NATO updates via email: http://bit.ly/NATOemailsFind NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebookFollow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitterFollow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagramFind NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedinFind NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr#NATO #OTAN #himars 🏷 ukraine, m142 himars live-fire, m142 himars live-fire exercise

Ice jump with the Latvian National Guard ❄️

NATO
Ice jumping is a military exercise conducted by troops serving in cold weather conditions across NATO. It requires soldiers, in a controlled environment, to jump into a hole in an otherwise frozen lake so that, if it should happen during training or operations, the soldiers will have already experienced the shock and will know how to get themselves out safely. To give a layman’s perspective on the ice jump exercise, Jake Tupman, a video producer for NATO, tests it out. Hosted by the Latvian National Guard, many of whom will also jump, he goes out into the Latvian forests to see what it feels like to plunge into icy cold water ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribeConnect with NATO online:Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepageReceive NATO updates via email: http://bit.ly/NATOemailsFind NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebookFollow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitterFollow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagramFind NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedinFind NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr#NATO #OTAN #WeAreNATO

The Digital Innovation Hub in Latvia offers a set of support measures for SMEs to acquire knowledge on the actual digital solutions and to improve problem-solving capabilities. Latvia is a country with very high-capacity broadband access in most of its regions but very low levels of digital skills. These types of measures will contribute positively to entrepreneurs and citizens of national regions, mainly by changing the way of thinking and encouraging business innovation and technological transformation processes to be launched. This project is part of Interreg Europe: https://www.interregeurope.eu/policylearning/good-practices/item/4112/digital-innovation-hub-dih/ This video is part of the European Broadband Competence Offices Network’s programme promoting awareness of good practices in broadband projects as well as EU broadband funding and policy. The Project Development Services (PDS) financed by ELENA will provide support to the Alior Bank S.A. for the preparation andverification of energy audits and preparation of complex technicaldesign documentation for loan applicants under two different loanprogrammes offered by Alior. The technical assistance will also helpAlior build technical capacity in energy efficiency to provide soundadvice to potential energy efficiency loan applicants and to make thefinal beneficiaries (housing associations) aware of the benefits whenperforming deep energy efficiency refurbishments. The housing sector in the Baltics is characterized by poor maintenance and low energy performance, but has uniform construction types (soviet era 1960s-1990s). This presents an opportunity to develop much-needed standardised approaches to energy-saving retrofits. The Jelgava JNIP (Jelgava building maintenance company) ELENA program is enabling the city of Jelgava to accelerate retrofitting. JNIP is uniquely placed to build consensus amongst apartment owners for retrofitting and take advantage of economies of scale with simultaneous renovations of similar buildings. Thanks to ELENA, JNIP can hire external experts to train their project managers and prepare the construction sector for serial refurbishment solutions in their city. This approach will provide the blueprint for a vital uptake in energy-saving retrofits in all Baltic states.

TRACING THE CHANGES: LATE PALAEOLITHIC AND EARLY MESOLITHIC LITHIC PROJECTILE POINTS IN LATVIA
28 Mar 2021
European Association...
Projectile points, representing one of the most distinctive tool forms in lithic collections, can serve as an important diagnostic factor to determine the presence of a certain archaeological industry or culture in a region. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to present Late Palaeolithic and Early Mesolithic (11th – 9th millennium BC) lithic projectile points from present-day Latvia, focus-ing on both morphological and technological attributes as well as on dating problems. It is possible to divide flint projectile points from Latvia (67 in total) into four main types, all produced from non-local, high-qual-ity Cretaceous flint. Even though each type has its own specific characteristics, some of them share common technological attributes. The first two types – tanged and willow-leaf points – are associated with the banks of two major rivers, the Daugava and Lielupe, representing the Swiderian technological tradition (Salaspils Laukskola and Avotiņi sites). Both tanged and willow-leaf points were produced from the same blank type. Based on similar material in the Baltic region, the tanged type is assigned to the Late Palaeolithic, while the willow-leaf type is dated to the end of the Late Palaeolithic and beginning of the Mesolithic. However, due to the lack of datable material on sites, it is not possible to determine the exact time these points were in use in present-day Latvia. Two other tanged point types – long, regular and smaller forms – are the Pulli types and have been found as stray finds in the River Daugava basin and at Early Mesolithic sites in NE (Zvejnieki II) and SE (Kvapani II) Latvia, dated to the 9th millennium BC. The use of smaller, less regular tanged points continued even later in the Mesolithic. All the points from Latvia are analyzed in the context of all the Eastern Baltic traditions. Our planet faces its greatest challenge for millennia: us.There is now almost unanimous agreement that humans are having enormous impacts on the natural balance of our planet, with consequences that threaten our own existence and the survival of natural ecosystems alike. The need for drastic change in our behaviour is clear. And yet, the response from political leaders and people in general is weak. Why? Human actions are driven by many factors, but having a clear understanding of cause and effect is a dominant one. Arguably, this is where communication of scientific evidence has failed to inform opinion sufficiently to drive the actions that are necessary to mitigate the worst impacts on our planet’s future climate. This session highlights the challenges that exist in communicating climate science and demonstrate ways in which scientific research and evidence can be communicated in a way that is meaningful and persuasive to the public and policymakers alike. This session demonstrates the most effective ways to communicate issues relating to climate change which may seem abstract, distant or complex, in a way that makes them relatable. Fortunately, he was able to disembark and be present for the birth of Victoria, their third child. Even though she had to put her career on hold in order to take care of their children and adapt to this way of life, María feels rewarded because she believes that it allows her to see many places and gives her a chance to miss her husband when he is away.
