Meet the COMBINE Team | Francesca Manfredini (InVento Lab)
18 Mar 2026
SciFoodHealth
Small habits around food often start early — and they can stay with us for life. In the next episode of our Meet the COMBINE Team mini-series, Francesca Manfredini from InVento Innovation Lab reflects on how her early observations of food waste shaped her interest in helping people reduce it. Today, InVento works closely with schools and households to measure food waste and test practical actions that can help prevent it. Through their work with students, teachers, and local communities, they explore the everyday habits and choices that influence what ends up in the bin. One key insight from their work in schools: young people often come up with creative and engaging ideas to tackle food waste. The challenge is not starting the conversation — it is keeping the momentum and turning good ideas into lasting routines. 👉 Learn more about COMBINE and how communities across Europe are working together to reduce food waste: food2030.eu/projects/combine/

European Union Agenc...
Message from the Executive Director of the European Union Agency for Railways, Oana Gherghinescu on the occasion of the upcoming ERTMS 2026 conference: From 21 to 23 April 2026, the European Union Agency for Railways will welcome the entire European rail community to Valenciennes for the ERTMS Conference 2026. Three intensive days in one place, where every part of the ecosystem comes together, European institutions, national authorities, infrastructure managers, railway undertakings, suppliers, conformity assessment bodies, and operational experts. I invite you to register today and join us in Valenciennes. It’s THE place to be if you want to hear first hand insights, learn from real deployment experience, and understand where the system is heading. ERTMS is not just a vision. It is an imperative reality we are deploying, and scaling across borders. And this conference is where we will align on the next steps. ERTMS is progressing, but not yet at the pace Europe needs. Together, we aim at clarifying deployment enablers and ambition on timelines, smart certification pathways, FRMCS readiness, and cost reduction strategies. Our objective is clear: fewer uncertainties, full maturity and standardised operational and engineering requirements, streamline procurement procedures, and a clear direction for the whole railway system in Europe towards ETCS only. Join us in April. Be part of the progress.

France: restoring the Marais d’Orx wetland after two centuries of drainage
20 Jan 2026
EUinmyRegion
An EU-supported conservation effort is helping restore the Marais d’Orx in southwest France, reversing centuries of drainage and preserving a unique wetland ecosystem. Located in the Landes region of southwestern France, the Marais d’Orx was originally a vast wetland. In the early 19th century, wetlands were considered unhealthy, and Napoleon ordered their drainage to convert them into agricultural land. Using pumps and dikes, the area was transformed into a polder to support farming and improve public health. The drainage system was further expanded under Napoleon III, enabling intensive agricultural development. Throughout the 20th century, the reclaimed land supported agro-industrial production, including some of the highest maize yields in France. However, maintaining the complex system of pumps and dams became increasingly costly, and from the late 20th century onwards, flooding gradually returned as the infrastructure deteriorated. As agricultural use declined, the ecological value of the site began to attract growing attention. Scientists and environmental organisations identified the area’s potential for biodiversity restoration. In the 1990s, the Conservatoire du Littoral stepped in to acquire and protect the site, recognising the opportunity to restore a damaged ecosystem. With the support of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the Conservatoire du Littoral acquired around 1,000 hectares of the Marais d’Orx. In 1995, the site was designated a national nature reserve. Restoration efforts are now managed in cooperation with local authorities through a comprehensive renaturation project aimed at re-establishing natural water dynamics and habitats. Developed with EU support alongside national and local funding, the restoration of the Marais d’Orx is now seen as a reference project for wetland recovery. The site serves as a living laboratory for ecological restoration and offers a potential model for similar renaturation initiatives across Europe. Since at least the fall of the Berlin Wall, Western navies, and particularly the U.S. Navy, have enjoyed complete freedom of action at sea, encountering no real opposition. This has enabled them to project their power across the globe, shaping their format, organization, and logistics to this end. The global ambitions of a growing number of countries, as evidenced by naval rearmament, the proliferation of offshore platforms, and increased ranges, now pose a new challenge: the ocean is no longer the sanctuary it once was. What are the organizational, operational, and logistical implications of this? “1,600 Palestinians have been killed while seeking aid...after months of starvation, while aid was delivered in the most undignified conditions.” Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, lays bare how such grave violations of international humanitarian law are no longer shocking; instead, they have been normalised, and carried out with impunity. In a recent discussion with our Chief Executive Sara Pantuliano, Francesca shared the findings of her most recent reports, including 𝘎𝘢𝘻𝘢 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦: 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘦. These document how a system of genocide and occupation is not enabled by military force alone, but by global supply chains, financial flows, corporate complicity, and state inaction. She stresses it's the responsibility of third-party states, corporations, and global institutions to act decisively to halt these violations. #Gaza #GazaGenocide #GazaUnderAttack #Palestine #OPT #InternationalLaw

You cannot keep brutalising other people without losing your own humanity in the process.” UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese warns that this moment represents a profound moral reckoning – one in which systems claiming legitimacy are collapsing under the weight of sustained violence and impunity. Francesca recently joined our Chief Executive Sara Pantuliano for a critical conversation about how the “economy of occupation” has evolved into an “economy of genocide”, what this reveals about complicity across business, finance and governance – and crucially, how the international community should hold such systems accountable before it’s too late. #Gaza #OPT #Palestine #GazaGenocide

The French presidency of the Council of the European Union is an opportunity for Food for Europe to draw a portrait of French agriculture, the largest farming sector in the EU 27. If the sector in France is aging generally, among young people entering it a “return to earth” has become highly fashionable. But with one imperative: to reconcile farming practices with the environment, and on a human scale. The twelfth episode of our series of podcasts dedicated to the world of agriculture in Europe takes you to the Cantal department, in the heart of Auvergne, to meet the farmers of France of today and tomorrow. Low-carbon agriculture, matching of standards between trading partners, implementation of the new Common Agricultural Policy: all are the priorities of the French presidency for European agriculture. But how do they line up with the expectations of the sector on the ground?

While the net-zero and green transition need to be effected mainly in the real economy, EU legislation initially focused on the financial services industry, in order to influence and redirect finance flows towards sustainable business activities. However, experience has shown that real economy enterprises themselves require a reasonable and reliable regulatory framework for sustainability purposes within which they can operate and proceed. Over the past about two years, we have now seen additional specific rules governing the activities and conduct of real economy enterprises – not necessarily exclusively, but directly addressing and obliging them. Such rules in particular focus on corporate governance and reporting as key areas for achieving corporate sustainability.

What Climate Action in Cities Actually Looks Like | #Paris
14 Aug 2025
UN Climate Change
Ten years ago, 195 countries made history with the Paris Agreement, uniting the world against climate change for the first time. Paris, where the agreement was signed, is proving that reducing emissions delivers real benefits. It’s cleaner air, greener streets and better daily life for all. Paris is joining other cities worldwide in turning that global commitment into local action. Cities across the globe are redesigning urban life. By retrofitting buildings for efficiency and health, replanting streets, redesigning transport, they are creating the communities that people want to live, work and thrive in. This is the Paris Agreement in action, spreading these benefits to communities everywhere as more and more cities embrace fairer, faster, and more local solutions for both people and planet. How is your city leading the change? #ParisAgreement Twitter ► https://twitter.com/UNFCCC Instagram ► https://www.instagram.com/UNclimatechange/ TikTok ► https://www.tiktok.com/@unclimatechange Facebook ► https://www.facebook.com/UNclimatechange The UNFCCC secretariat (UN Climate Change) is the United Nations entity tasked with supporting the global response to the threat of climate change. UNFCCC stands for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Convention has near universal membership (197 Parties) and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep the global average temperature rise this century as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all three agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development. #UNClimateChange

What does it mean to resist from the margins? To burn with joy? To build a Europe rooted in feminism, anti-racism, queer resistance, and radical imagination? Transeuropa 25 was more than a festival. It was a transnational act of defiance, a frontline. From decolonial rituals to cyberwitches, from anti-fascist assemblies to healing collectives, we gathered in Paris to resist, imagine, and act. The European budget is the backbone of the European Union. And this week we joined a very interesting conference in the run up to the presentation of the next Multiannual Financial Framework to share some thoughts on how the EIB Group, working together with the European Commission and Member states, can leverage guarantees and blend grants and loans to be bigger, faster, simpler – with more impact. We had very good meetings with Commissioners McGrath, Sefcovic and Síkela on trade and investment, on the upcoming pan-European 28th regime for companies and investors, on simplification and the global development agenda. We were delighted to exchange on Europe’s priorities in the current geopolitical context with former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Luxembourg Finance Minister Roth. This week we also announced new financing to expand the port of Malaga, for offshore wind farms in Poland and to support the green transition for French farmers and security and defence tech companies across Europe. And in Morocco, we are also financing green energy and water infrastructures. --------------------------------- Visit our website: https://www.eib.org Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EuropeanInvestmentBank Twitter: https://twitter.com/eib LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/european-investment-bank Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/europeaninvestmentbank/

Ten years after the historic climate agreement reached at COP21 in Paris, considerable progress has been made in areas ranging from energy efficiency and renewables deployment to electric vehicles and heat pumps. However, this progress is well below that required to deliver on the goals in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, and investment in clean energy remains uneven. As political headwinds increase, Brian Motherway considers what the past decade has taught us in terms of global engagement on climate and clean energy, and what we have learned in terms of engaging citizens and societies in the vital project of clean energy transitions. This event is part of the IIEA’s REthink Energy series, organised in partnership with ESB, Ireland’s state-owned electricity company. Speaker bio: Brian Motherway is Head of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Inclusive Transitions at the International Energy Agency. He oversees analytical and outreach programmes supporting energy efficiency globally.
