Germany's Political Uncertainty Ahead of the 2025 Federal Election
Germany's Political Uncertainty Ahead of the 2025 Federal Election
Today
IIEA
Germany’s traffic light coalition came to power in December 2021, promising a green, innovative transformation - of the German economy and its role in Europe. It has delivered neither, buffeted by external crises and hobbled by domestic ideological battles that have poisoned cooperation on all fronts and left Germany - and Europe - adrift. Derek Scally, Berlin correspondent of the Irish Times, gives an overview of the options for any new government following the next federal election, scheduled for September 2025. About the Speaker: Derek Scally is a native Dubliner, who studied at Dublin City University and the Humboldt University in Berlin, where he has been Irish Times correspondent since 2001. Covering politics, business and culture, he is a regular contributor to German news outlets, including Die Zeit weekly and Deutschlandfunk/WDR radio. He reports regularly from northern Europe and is also author of “The Best Catholics in the World”, published in 2021 by Penguin.

Timothy Snyder came to Kharkiv on September 8th, 2024, despite regular strikes on the city by Russian bombs, missiles, and drones. Our conversation was focused on freedom and values, which are the key topics of his latest book, On Freedom, published on September 17th. https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/460254/on-freedom-by-snyder-timothy/9781847928054 Kharkiv is Ukraine’s second-largest city, located some 40 kilometers from the Russian border. The city is hit almost daily by Russian glide bombs, missiles, and drones, mostly hitting civilian buildings and causing casualties among civilians. Despite this, Kharkiv remains one of the key centers of Ukrainian cultural life. Our conversation took place in an underground shelter, to ensure safety against possible Russian attacks. For safety reasons, the audience was carefully selected by invitation, without public announcements. Despite the dangers, about a hundred Kharkiv artists, writers, journalists, students, and university instructors came, with many of them contributing questions. The cooperation of several organizations made this meeting happen: UkraineWorld (Internews Ukraine), the Kharkiv Literature Museum, Kharkiv Media Hub, PEN Ukraine, Art Area, and the Public Interest Journalism Lab. The meeting was moderated by Volodymyr Yermolenko, chief editor of UkraineWorld and president of PEN Ukraine. Finance Watch's Chief Economist Thierry Philipponnat highlights the limits of private capital in meeting Europe’s enormous investment needs. Private capital markets are constrained by the basic dynamics of risk and return, which limits funding for central initiatives such as digital infrastructure, defense capabilities and the energy transition, let alone climate mitigation and adaptation. Early investments would save money in the long run but are often unable to offer the short term returns in order to attract private capital. Even a fully realised Capital Markets Union could only cover about a third of the necessary funding. The scope of Europe’s structural challenges demand a much larger and more coordinated financial response. Europe must unlock public spending, which is currently limited at both the national and EU level. Member States' public budgets are restricted by outdated fiscal rules that impose rigid deficit and debt targets. Meanwhile at the EU level, any suggestions to enlarge the EU budget are met with fierce political resistance. In short, arbitrary rules are limiting investment today and costing Europe’s future a fortune. The cost of action must be weighed against the cost of inaction. Should Europe invest now to secure our future, or delay and face catastrophic costs later? It’s time to rethink frugality at the EU and National level. Fiscal responsibility means investing in resilience and climate adaptation today, not passing on an ever-mounting tab to the next generation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Finance Watch is a European NGO founded in reaction to the last financial crisis, when policymakers realised that there was no counter-power to the lobby of finance. Industrial emissions in Europe remain persistently high. With climate deadlines looming, high-temperature heat pumps can play a vital role in meeting decarbonisation goals. High-temperature heat pumps using renewable electricity have the potential to replace fossil fuels and enhance energy and resource efficiency, significantly reducing industry’s CO2 footprint. This technology offers a promising future as efficient heat transformers for heating and cooling applications, especially for waste heat utilisation and recovery. Despite steady growth in the range of these high-temperature heat pumps, however, lack of clear information about capabilities, design, control, integration and suitable applications is hindering broad implementation. On 4 December 2024, we welcomed Dr. Cordin Arpagaus, Senior Research Engineer at the OST – Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, Institute for Energy Systems IES, to provide: - A market overview of high-temperature heat pump suppliers - Insight into the limitations and state of current technology - Potential applications for steam generation - Three key recommendations for broader market adoption of high-temperature heat pumps

As more people generate their own energy, it's crucial for policymakers to support prosumers—those who both produce and consume energy. This video highlights key recommendations for integrating prosumers into the energy market, including transitioning to net billing, implementing cost-reflective pricing, streamlining connections, promoting energy storage, enabling peer-to-peer trading, and supporting vulnerable consumers. These steps pave the way for a fair, sustainable, and future-ready energy transition. The Joint Recommendation on Self-Consumption Regulation was issued by the Energy Community Secretariat in cooperation with the Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER) and developed in the framework of the European Commission’s EU4Energy programme PHASE II – ‘Promoting the Clean Energy Transition in the Eastern Partnership Countries.’

What is happening to the economy in America and Europe? Price levels have gone up substantially in the past years – and while many want to declare an end to the cycle of inflation, have we really grasped what factors actually forced a sharp rise in prices? Early in 2023, the great economist John Cochrane released a new and profound book, The Fiscal Theory of the Price Level, that challenged classic explanations of inflation and deflation. With remaining high deficits in the US and growing deficit-debts problems in countries like France, what should we expect happen in the near future? All the countries in Europe suffering from low or no economic growth – what should they do? And yes – Trump! What economic policies are a second Trump administration expected to pursue, and how will they effect that state of the economy? Guest: John H. Cochrane is one of the world’s leading economists. He has been researching financial economics and macro-economics for 40 years and is now the Rose-Marie and Jack Anderson Senior Fellow at Stanford’s Hoover Institution. He was previously a professor at the University of Chicago and its Booth School of Business. He’s the author of several books and numerous papers on finance, including the leading textbook on asset pricing. He blogs as the Grumpy Economist. European University ...
The European University Association organised the webinar ‘Towards a strategic vision for open repositories in Europe’ on 3 December at 15.00-16.30 CET. The availability of open repositories plays a crucial role in democratising access to knowledge and research outputs. By ensuring that data, publications and other forms of research results are accessible, repositories act as key enablers of the transition to Open Science at institutional, national, European and global levels. However, several questions remain regarding their implementation. What is the state of play of open repositories in Europe? To what extent are they are accessible to researchers, institutions and the wider public? Are they sufficiently interconnected or are there strategies in place to ensure their integration at a European and global scale? The online event addressed challenges, opportunities and future directions for open repositories in Europe. Results from the report ‘Current state and future directions for open repositories in Europe’, published in December 2023 by OpenAIRE, LIBER, SPARC Europe, and COAR, were presented to set the context for the discussion. Experts from European and institutional repositories were also invited to share their insights and experiences on challenges and the evolving needs of their repositories. Participants had the opportunity to discuss strategies for enhancing collaboration and integration among repositories, with the goal of building a more robust open repository infrastructure across Europe. It is the responsibility of the supplier to provide safety data sheet to their customer when selling hazardous chemicals or mixtures.  In 2021, new requirements for safety data sheets were introduced under the REACH Regulation, and this year, ECHA’s Enforcement Forum carried out an EU-wide project to check if companies are following these updated rules. The inspectors found out that 35 % of the checked safety data sheets were non-compliant. Compliance has improved from previous projects but further efforts are needed to better protect workers and professional users from risks of hazardous chemicals. Our guests are Abdulqadir Mohamad Suleiman, the Norwegian alternate member of ECHA’s Enforcement Forum and the Chair of the working group managing this enforcement project and Maciej Baranski, leading the Harmonised Enforcement Team at ECHA, which contributed to the project. ************** Subscribe to our channel: https://bit.ly/321VQgE Subscribe to our Safer Chemicals Podcast: https://echa.europa.eu/podcasts Subscribe to our news: https://echa.europa.eu/subscribe Follow us on: *X/Twitter: https://x.com/EU_ECHA *Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EUECHA/ *LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/european-chemicals-agency Visit our website: https://echa.europa.eu/ Disclaimer: Views expressed by interviewees do not necessarily represent the official position of the European Chemicals Agency. The Deforestation Regulation, adopted in 2023, establishes rules to ensure that products derived from certain commodities (namely coffee, cocoa, palm oil, soy, cattle, rubber, and wood), placed on the EU market or exported from the EU, have not caused deforestation or forest degradation during their production. These products must also be produced in accordance with the relevant legislation of the country of production and be covered by a due diligence statement. The Council and the Parliament have agreed to the Commission’s proposal to postpone the application date of the Regulation by one year. However, the inclusion of no-risk countries by the European Parliament will relaunch the discussion among the three European institutions. During this webinar, organized by ecoDa and AO Shearman, our speakers will address what the Deforestation Regulation and its implementation mean for board members. They will also discuss how the Deforestation Regulation intersects with the EU Green Deal's legal maze.
