"We work every day to make our impact bigger" - SEI Asia’s push for #climate & #SocialJustice
13 Mar 2025
Stockholm Environmen...
For 20 years, SEI Asia has been tackling complex environmental and social challenges - from air pollution to transboundary water governance and climate risks. But what does this look like in action? I hope my research can surface certain entry points to bridge the gap as well as to ensure the rights of the most vulnerable - Indigenous Peoples, local communities and those most affected by climate and environmental change. - Dayoon Kim In this video, two of our researchers share how they are working to advance gender equality, social equity and policy engagement in the region. From advocating for inclusive environmental policies to strengthening climate resilience through the Mekong Thought Leadership and Think Tanks Network, they are striving for real-world impact. I see struggles and challenges every day in the region I call home. There is so much I’d like to do and while we are just one part of a collective effort we try every day to make our impact bigger and more meaningful. – Nhan Vo 📽️ Watch to hear how they are shaping a more sustainable and equitable future. #RoadTo2029 #SEIDiverseVoices

10 Mar 2025
Stockholm Environmen...
🌍 By 2050, nearly 70% of the world's population will live in cities. The way we plan and shape these spaces today will define the future of billions. 🏙️ But who really shapes our cities? Who decides how we move, breathe and live in urban spaces? According to the latest figures from the World Bank and UN-Habitat, 56% of the global population - about 4.4 billion people - reside in urban areas. This trend is accelerating, with an additional 2.2 billion people expected to live in cities by 2050. We talked to Steve Cinderby from SEI York, who unpacks how co-creating solutions with communities and policymakers can make cities more inclusive, climate-resilient and livable. Cities are shaped by many voices - residents, businesses, local authorities , all with different agendas. Our job is to bring them together to build a shared vision for the future. From Nairobi to Mombasa, Steve's work fosters collaboration between communities, planners and policymakers - designing safer, cleaner and more connected neighborhoods. 🎥 Watch as he shares real-world examples of how better urban planning transforms lives. #SEIDiverseVoices #SustainableCities #UrbanMobility #ClimateResilience

Women in science. Women in action. Women leading change. This #InternationalWomenDay we celebrate Parichat Pinsri, a researcher from SEI Asia who is working closely with farmers and local communities in Thailand to build resilience in the face of climate change. 🚜💧 When droughts intensify and climate patterns shift, rice production suffers and so do livelihoods. That’s why Parichat is identifying climate-smart solutions and strengthening water resource management to help communities adapt. 🔬 What drives her? Seeing the real impact of climate change on people's lives and knowing that innovation can make a difference. 💡 What challenges her? The lack of quality data, which can hinder decision-making and slow progress. ✨ What gives her hope? The potential to create meaningful change, support local governments and communities and build a more climate-resilient future for farmers. This is what leadership in climate action looks like. More women in science means stronger solutions for a changing world. 📽️ Watch Parichat’s story and join the conversation: How do we support more women in climate research and action? #IWD2025 #WomenInScience #ClimateAction #DiverseVoices

In March 2024, Sweden ended over 200 years of neutrality when it joined the NATO alliance, a decision driven by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the growing security threats in Europe. As the nation with the longest Baltic Sea coastline and strategic proximity to the Arctic, Sweden’s geography alone makes it a key contributor to Euro-Atlantic security. But its contributions go beyond location. With a highly advanced military, a strong defence industry and a history of cooperation with NATO forces, Sweden brings valuable knowledge, innovation and experience to the Alliance. So, how exactly does this Nordic nation of 10.5 million people add to NATO’s strength? ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel https://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News https://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History https://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: https://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Receive NATO updates via email: https://bit.ly/NATOemails Find NATO on FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: https://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: https://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: https://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #OTAN #WeAreNATO #Sweden

🌍💨 It's #CleanAirNight! Clean air is a human right and tackling air pollution is key to addressing climate change. Our new SEI's diverse voices video features Caroline Sawe, research associate at SEI York, highlighting how SEI supports countries in bridging the gap between air pollution and climate action. Caroline explains how we work to: ✅ Incorporate air pollution into climate strategies – developing methane roadmaps and supporting initiatives like the #MethanePledge and the Climate & Clean Air Coalition. ✅ Build capacity and provide tools – training partners to use SEI’s cutting-edge LEAP tool for modeling and data analysis ✅ Foster global collaboration and funding – working across our centres, including SEI Africa – Stockholm Environment Institute, and partnering with organisations that improve and increase funding to address air pollution Our strategy, Transitions in Turbulent Times, drives this work forward by connecting science with action, ensuring the world can tackle the dual challenges of air pollution and climate change. Caroline’s message is clear: without research, collaboration and funding, our health, environment and future are at risk. 📽️ Watch the video to hear more from her about how SEI is making an impact: cc @ClimateCleanAirCoalition @GlobalActionPlanUK #GMP #AirPollution #SLCPs #RoadTo2029

“What would happen if the research we do didn’t exist? That critical bridge between science and policy would disappear. SEI sits between those two worlds.” – Somya Joshi, SEI's Global Agendas, Climate and Systems Division Lead. With #ArtificialIntelligence scaling at an intense speed, we are focusing on its potential to better interpret and use datasets for evidence-based policymaking. At SEI, we are uniquely positioned to examine this emerging technology at the intersection of AI and sustainability, tackling challenges such as countering mainstream narratives that downplay its environmental impact or rely on the hope of a 'silver bullet' energy or tech breakthrough. What we really need is greater transparency around AI’s environmental impacts, viewed through a life cycle perspective, Somya explains during the interview. It is not just talk or targets set at international conferences. It is the nitty gritty of how those targets can actually be achieved. Equity is at the heart of our work. Across our global network in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and Latin America, we empower low-resource settings and ensure no one is left behind. #frugalAI 🧠 🛠️ SEI has developed four bespoke AI tools to address complex challenges, from policy coherence to geospatial analysis and governance transparency. These tools are designed to ensure technology drives real change where it is needed most. Learn more from Somya in this new drop of SEI’s #DiverseVoices series about how AI fits into our #RoadTo2029 and why responsible governance is key to building a just and sustainable future.

Trans European Polic...
It has been 30 years since Austria, Finland and Sweden organised their respective European Union (EU) referenda that led to the accession of the three countries in 1995. Now enlargement is back as a major issue on the EU’s agenda. However, different Member States continue to have diverging preferences, priorities and concerns regarding the enlargement process. How does the accession trio of 1995 position itself in today’s enlargement debates and how have their policies evolved in recent years? Are there any shared views that could serve as building blocks for broader EU consensus – or are we witnessing three separate national perspectives that underline the EU’s lack of unity? The Trans European Policy Studies Association (TEPSA), the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA) and the Austrian Society for European Politics (ÖGfE)/Europa Club Wien, brought together experts from Austria, Finland and Sweden to discuss the three countries’ views on EU enlargement in a dedicated online discussion on 5 December 2024 at 9:30 CET / 10:30 EET. The event was hosted on Zoom and livestreamed on TEPSA’s YouTube channel. Speakers included: - Dr. Calle Håkansson, Researcher at the Swedish Defence Research Agency’s Division for Defence Analysis & Associate Research Fellow at the Swedish Institute for International Affairs (UI); - Tyyne Karjalainen, Researcher in the European Union and Strategic Competition research programme, Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA); - Paul Schmidt, Secretary General, Austrian Society for European Politics (OEGfE) & editor of the ‘Future of Europe: Views from the Capitals’ series; - Moderated by Dr. Sanna Salo, Post-Doctoral Fellow in the European Union and Strategic Competition research programme, Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA). This online discussion reflected on the findings of TEPSA’s latest book ‘Enlargement and the Future of Europe: Views from the Capitals’, co-edited by Michael Kaeding, Johannes Pollak, and Paul Schmidt, and published by Springer. The book gathers over 60 leading experts in 41 European countries to examine how different national histories, policies, and corresponding public perceptions can influence engagement with the EU enlargement process. It is part of an annual series coordinated by TEPSA examining important European themes from national perspectives. Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm is Sweden's first energy community, established in 2023 as a pioneering model of sustainable urban living. Initiated by a collaboration between the City of Stockholm, local businesses, and academic institutions, the project involves nine housing cooperatives, with hopes to eventually include over 20,000 residents. The community focuses on utilising #renewableenergy sources such as #solar panels, battery storage and virtual #electricity sharing, though current Swedish legislation poses challenges to this vision. Supported by the European RESCHOOL project, Hammarby Sjöstad is working to standardise data and develop a smart grid, aiming to improve energy efficiency and resident engagement through tools like the Local Life app. This initiative empowers residents to participate in the energy transition while striving to make Hammarby Sjöstad climate-positive by 2030, serving as an example of innovation, community collaboration, and sustainable urban development. Why Swedish jets land on highways 🇸🇪 🛬 🛣️
6 Aug 2024
NATO
It’s a strange sight, yet one common in Sweden: angular fighter jets slowly drifting down to land not on a runway, but a civilian motorway. This is a difficult but critical skill that gives the Swedish Air Force extra flexibility in the event of a crisis. If airbases, airports or auxiliary landing strips are damaged or otherwise unavailable, the JAS 39 Gripen fighters can land on roads that have been deliberately engineered to accommodate landings by fighter jets. The Gripen is also engineered to land on roadways: its reinforced landing gear can handle a harder landing, and the jet stands high enough to prevent loose asphalt or other roadside debris from getting sucked down the jet intake. Once on the ground, the Gripens make use of a mobile forward arming and refuelling point (FARP), gassing up in a matter of minutes before taking off again. While impressive to witness, this is a complicated art that requires hours of training to perfect. But ultimately, it pays off: Sweden’s ability to spread its air forces throughout the country makes it very difficult for an adversary to knock them out.

The construction sector and wood materials have been an essential part of life in both Norway and Sweden, as wood construction is a long-standing tradition in these Nordic countries. However, there are several obstacles that are hampering coordination in the wood construction sector between these two neighbouring countries. Differences in regulations and requirements for construction products and a lack of access to information make trade and business opportunities more difficult across the border and hinder regional integration. 4p1000 Initiative
On the occasion of the UNFCCC COP 28 in Dubaï (United Arab Emirates), the 4 per 1000 Initiative: Soils for Food Security held the 6th 4 per 1000 Initiative Day on Wednesday, November 16th, 2022, in the Dubaï Dusit Conference Hall. The International Initiative 4 per 1000, launched by France on December 1st, 2015, at the COP 21, consists of federating all voluntary stakeholders of the public and private sectors (national governments, local and regional governments, companies, trade organizations, NGOs, research facilities, etc.) under the framework of the Lima-Paris Action Plan (LPAP). The Initiative aims to demonstrate that agriculture, particularly agricultural soils, can play a crucial role in food security and climate change. Supported by solid scientific documentation, this initiative invites all partners to state or implement practical actions on soil carbon storage and the type of practices to achieve this (e.g., agroecology, agroforestry, conservation agriculture, landscape management, etc.). The initiative encourages stakeholders to transition towards a productive, highly resilient agriculture based on the appropriate management of lands and soils, creating jobs and incomes, and ensuring sustainable development.
