Christopher Day, Professor of Education & member of Centre for Research in Educational Leadership and Management (CRELM) explains why mobility driven by factors like family, job opportunities, and national boundaries acts as a moderating factor that shapes teachers’ career decisions. We explore why: Retention requires more than keeping teachers physically in the organisation Quality retention means keeping their motivation, engagement, heart, and mind Teachers’ needs change over time as their lives and professional demands evolve CPD alone cannot solve long‑term motivation or resilience challenges Understanding these dynamics is key for building stronger, more motivated, and more stable VET teaching communities.

Socially Engaged Pedagogies The Architect as Listener, Mediator, Collaborator, Civic Agent, and Critical Practitioner Architectural education is increasingly called to respond to complex social realities, widening inequities, and contested spatial futures. At a time of profound social, environmental, and political transformation, schools of architecture must reconsider what they teach, whom they serve, and how knowledge is produced. This UIA EDUCOM webinar explores socially engaged pedagogies that situate learning within lived contexts, collective processes, and public responsibility. Moving beyond the image of the architect as a detached author, the session advocates for an education that cultivates empathy, critical agency, accountability, and civic purpose. Through community-based studios, design-build initiatives, and immersive learning environments, architectural education can become a shared act of inquiry and action—co-produced with communities and institutions. The webinar features contributions from: Roberto Cavallo – Architecture Beyond Design: Educating Future Professionals as Agents of Change Bassem Ariguib – From Classroom to Community: Cultivating Critical Practitioners through Environmental Immersion Selma Harrington – Learning Within Lived Context: The New European Bauhaus Forum for Bosnia and Herzegovina (Reflection and Conclusion) Dubravko Bačić – Bridging Studio and Practice: Essential Competencies for Future Architects Ashraf M. Salama – The Socius in Architecture Pedagogy: PEARL, SHAPE, CRISP (Introduction to the Session) Together, the speakers will reflect on how socially engaged educational practices foster ethical awareness, strengthen critical thinking, and redefine the role of architectural education in shaping inclusive and resilient environments.

In this video, Joaquim Santos from FNE (Portugal) explains how teacher unions and national organisations play a key role in strengthening the VET teaching profession, improving public perception, and shaping evidence‑based education policies. Every year, FNE carries out national consultations with teachers, students, school leaders, and parents. These insights guide government negotiations and help address the real needs of VET schools and staff. The European Vocational Teacher Survey (EVTS) provides an essential additional layer of evidence. By complementing national consultations with European data, EVTS helps FNE and other national organisations better understand what VET teachers truly need. What makes being a VET teacher such a meaningful and rewarding profession? In this video, Monika Hoang The, Policy & Project Manager at the European Federation of Education Employers (EFEE), shares why choosing VET teaching is a powerful career path. VET teachers stay closely connected to the labour market while combining professional expertise and teaching skills in one role. Through learning‑by‑doing, they see a direct and tangible impact on their students’ progress, helping shape the next generation of skilled workers essential for a competitive and resilient Europe. These insights reflect the type of motivation, satisfaction, and professional realities explored in the European Vocational Teacher Survey (EVTS). By capturing what VET teachers value and identifying areas that still need improvement, EVTS provides crucial evidence for designing better policies that support teacher well‑being, professional development, and long‑term retention.

We cannot save the ocean alone, but we are going to do our part with this expedition to inspire and engage for more ocean action. As part of the Ocean Decade, Haakon Vatle, leader of the One Ocean Expedition, and the Statsraad Lehmkuhl ship crew left Bergen, Norway in April 2025 for a transatlantic ocean expedition spanning three continents for a year — a 12-month global voyage aboard a historic sailing boat combining sail training, ocean science, education and diplomacy to inspire action for a sustainable ocean. From hosting events during the 2025 UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France last summer to welcoming school children and embarking early-career scientists along the way, the One Ocean Expedition shows how ocean expeditions are powerful levers to promote ocean science across the world. In this video, Julius Jakučinskas, Director of the Lifelong Learning Department at the Lithuanian Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, explains why the European Vocational Teacher Survey (EVTS) is especially valuable for smaller countries with limited research and administrative capacity. The EVTS provides structured, comparative evidence that countries could not easily generate on their own. It allows them to benchmark their VET systems against others and adopt best practices already proven to work elsewhere. With clearer insights into what works, countries can better target future investments, whether in teachers’ digital skills, pedagogical training, or stronger links with industry.
