Empowering women in rural areas: a key to rural development
13 Jan 2025
European Committee o...
We have a chat we Ellen Nauta Van-Moorsel, member of the European Committee of the Regions and Mayor of the municipality of Hof van Twente, and Blanca Casares, Rural Development Officer at European Association for Innovation in Local Development (AEIDL), on the role of women in rural areas. Women are a driving force for the maintenance, conservation and development of rural areas, both in cultural and economic terms. Not only do they contribute to the preservation and handing down of traditions but they also represent a considerable proportion of the workforce in agriculture and support the development of rural areas in the face of a constant process of depopulation. Unfortunately, due to the predominance of certain conditions in rural areas, such as unemployment, poverty, poor transport and lack of basic educational, health and care services, and to the persistence of a traditional mentality imposing stereotyped roles for women and men and confining women to a subordinate role in both private and public life, women in rural areas are confronted with major challenges in the achievement of gender equality and the enjoyment of their rights. Achieving gender equality and empowering women is not only the right thing to do but is a critical ingredient to sustainable rural areas. Across OECD rural regions, Indigenous female entrepreneurs play a vital role in driving economic prosperity and preserving cultural heritage and ecosystems, often leveraging traditional and cultural knowledge and local resources to create innovative businesses. Despite their contributions, they frequently face unique and systemic barriers to entrepreneurship, including limited access to financing and gender expectations. Addressing these challenges is essential not only for individual success but also for fostering inclusive and sustainable rural development across OECD member countries. This event builds on the OECD work on Linking Indigenous Communities with Regional Development that explores policy measures to improve Indigenous wellbeing across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. It also draws on the networks and experience of the OECD Mining Regions and Cities Initiative that has conducted several case studies and events addressing engagement between Indigenous communities and resource sectors across the globe. European Committee o...
Urban planning, including urban mobility, plays a crucial role in enhancing citizens' quality of life. It should therefore be accessible to all, ensuring the best possible service that meets the specific needs of various users, especially the vulnerable groups. However, the approach that includes a gender perspective in order to understand the mobility patterns and specific needs of women and young girls is largely missing from the urban planning process, putting women at a disadvantage compared to men. We had a chat about these issues with Linda Gaasch, Member of the European Committee of the Regions, and Lucie Rousselle, city councillor in Ixelles, Belgium. Watch the video to find out about some new ideas on how to shape urban mobility system that is equitable and leaves no citizen behind! Follow us on cor.europa.eu
