In Europe, geothermal energy represents only 2,8 % of renewable energy sources used. But in Tamási, in southwest Hungary, known for its thermal spa, thermal water is also used for district heating, significantly replacing the heating gas demand of the municipally managed public buildings. In addition to the gas savings, the system also contributes to reducing greenhouse gas carbon dioxide released into the air, contributing to the carbon neutrality targets prioritized by the EU. Watch the video with József Ribányi, Member of Tolna Megye County Council, to learn more about how geothermal energy can have direct benefits for local communities, including by contributing to energy independence and safety. This event aimed to understand the increasingly pivotal role of the private sector’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives in shaping the long-term development of resource-rich regions. The workshop brought together a wide range of participants – from the mining and forestry sector to municipal representatives and Indigenous leaders - to hear how the alignment of ESG practices with regional development policies and community-led initiatives can support sustainable growth and resilience at the subnational level. A klímaváltozás elleni küzdelem egyre nagyobb lendületet vesz Magyarországon. Szeged városában működik Magyarország legnagyobb geotermikus energiarendszere az EU kohéziós politikájának támogatásának köszönhetően. A cél a gáz mintegy 50 százalékos csökkentése, ami növeli Magyarország energiafüggetlenségét. A szegedi modell más EU-tagállamokban is megismételhető, hogy segítse az EU klímacéljainak elérését. Act!onHeat Training Programme 2024: Session 3

The last of three online sessions of the Act!onHeat Training Programme is entitled A Look at the Future of Heating & Cooling in Europe; it focuses on where the European heating and cooling industry is headed, as cities accelerate their efforts to decarbonise the sector. In order to achieve climate neutrality, the transition to a greener heating and cooling system is key, as it accounts for half of the energy demand in Europe. Cities are developing ambitious plans, creating more efficient district heating systems and partnering with organisations that bring innovative technologies and opportunities. During this session, we heard about the Act!onHeat project experience, and learned about best practice heating and cooling in the cities of Mannheim, Germany and Islington, UK. Doubling the number of kilometres cycled in Europe by 2030 is an ambitious target, and regions and cities will be right at the forefront of making this a reality. Promoting the use of bikes needs investment in better cycling infrastructure but also more incentives for citizens to use their bikes for safe, accessible and sustainable travel that is good for their health and for the environment. Getting this right could help create millions of jobs in everything from manufacturing and tourism to the retail, health and sports sector. Watch these stories from Milan (Italy), West Pomerania (Poland), Abruzzo (Italy), Oulu (Finland), Flandes (Belgium), and Västra Götaland (Sweden).

Preventing food waste: cities leading the way forward - A WCEF2024 Accelerator session
23 Apr 2024
icleieurope
Food waste has substantial negative impacts - environmentally, socially and economically. Around one-third of food produced globally is lost or wasted - directly contributing to the climate crisis (representing 8-10% of global greenhouse gases emissions), stressing the environment and exacerbating food insecurity, and resulting in economic losses of an estimated $1 trillion a year. Reducing food loss and waste could thus be one of the leading strategies globally for achieving a sustainable food future. Yet, opportunities provided by food waste prevention remain largely untapped. This WCEF2024 accelerator session explores strategies that cities put in place to reduce food waste along the food supply chain, building on the CHORIZO and the CityLoops projects.
