European Aluminium
As a strategic raw material, aluminium plays a crucial role in advancing Europe’s industrial goals. Thanks to its widespread use in clean and digital technologies, as well as aerospace and defence applications, the demand for aluminium is projected to rise 30% by 2040. To satisfy this demand in Europe, we need to promote strategies aimed at enabling our industry to establish new primary aluminium capacities, restore previously curtailed ones, and boost the production of recycled aluminium. Our Director Circular Economy & Raw Materials, George Karkampasis, emphasises the need for a robust industrial agenda focused on securing Europe's raw materials supply chains and enhancing their competitiveness in global markets.

HOT: Simpler tax rules for cross-border SMEs in the EU
17 Apr 2024
EU tax and customs
Compliance with business taxation rules can be complex. If SMEs wish to operate cross-border, they become taxable in more than one Member State as soon as their activity abroad creates a permanent establishment, which requires compliance with different tax systems and rules. Compliance with those obligations comes with fixed costs, creating a barrier that can prevent SMEs from developing into other markets, investing back into their business or hiring new staff. This is especially the case for new companies and start-ups. Under the new Head Office Taxation (HOT) proposal, cross-border SMEs would be able to choose to interact with only one tax administration in one EU Member State – that of the Head Office – instead of having to comply with multiple tax systems. The Commission's proposal will increase tax certainty and reduce compliance costs, which will help to foster investment and cross-border expansion in the EU. The webinar is addressed to SME's. It will explain the proposal to the interested audience and will also address questions from the audience. China HR Insights: From Talent Pool to Work Contracts
26 Mar 2024
EU SME Centre
China’s labour market is undergoing profound changes. The educational attainment level of urbanites has soared over the past decade, transforming the talent pool in large cities. This has also contributed to the gradual shift to an economy more reliant on the tertiary sector in terms of GDP and employment shares. However, urban-rural differences remain high. In first-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin, 30% of the population has graduated from university. In comparison, at the national level, the rate of tertiary education remained at 18,5% in 2022. For European SMEs in China, understanding the country’s labour market is key to creating sound staffing strategies for their teams on the ground. Our recent report on the topic highlights the evolution of the talent pool, the cultural differences between China and Europe in terms of communication styles, hierarchy, and work-life balance, as well as contractual considerations. In this video, Hunter Shi, co-author of the report, presents some of the main points that SMEs should know when they build teams in China. Time chapters: 00:00:00 Introduction 00:00:33 China's labour market 00:02:52 China's labour law and regulations 00:06:10 Five social insurances and one housing fund 00:09:50 Direct, dispatched, outsourced labour 00:12:50 Labour contract termination 00:15:10 Proactive management 00:18:10 Looking ahead New to China's HR practices?
