SusChem was launched in July 2004 as one of the first European Technology Platforms: a European Commission supported initiative to create industry-led stakeholder fora to define research and innovation priorities in a number of areas.

SusChem was founded by six European bodies that represented the main stakeholders from academia and industry in the sector.

The European Commission has provided financial and consultative support.
