Blue Halkidiki

Part of #EUBeachCleanUp events 2024

Who we are

We are Greek Eco Project, a nonprofit environmental organisation based in Thessaloniki Greece, but acts all over ;A group of people with respect for nature, who don’t like to stay in theory but commit to actions and make many environmental activities />With our main goal to raise environmental awareness and educate people of all ages, we have planned more than 239 actions, with 6852 participants, cleaning more than 17 tons of garbage from coasts and from the bottom of the sea, since 2020.

The main problem

One of our biggest actions during summer is Blue Halkidiki, I’m which we’re committed to the ocean. The pollution of our oceans is one of the biggest threats to our planet. Plastic waste isn’t affecting only the sea life anymore, but also our own food chain.

What Blue Halkidiki is

Our project “Blue Halkidiki” is our biggest effort to make the ocean “Blue” again. The program contains underwater and beach cleanups from members and volunteers, briefings and updates on our findings, awareness campaigns, research about microplastics in marine biodiversity from the experts and supporters
from Hellenic Agricultural Organization - Dimitra, Fisheries Research Institute and photographic evidence from the bottom of the sea from the photographer Nicholas Samaras.

“Blue Halkidiki” project first started in the summer of 2021 and since then we do it every year. In 2023 we removed from the bottom of the ocean 7 tons of garbage (2 garbage cans, fishing equipment, car tires, plastic of any kind) and from the coast 1 ton and cigarettes from the beach of Marmaras. As you can
clearly see from the video, despite our efforts to clean the bottom of Porto Koufo port, the 7 tons was only a small part of the problem.

This summer we go with more volunteers and more divers, with just one goal, to make the sea clean again!
