Air quality in Europe: a closer look at the impact of COVID19 lock-down and the related travel restrictions on NO2 and particles emissions

EGVIA is organising a web-based workshop on 21st September 2020 from 9:30 to 13:00 (Brussels time) to review the data collected on air quality across Europe during the COVID-19 lockdown.

EGVIA is organising its first web-based workshop on 21st September 2020 from 9:30 to 13:00 CEST to review the data collected on air quality across Europe during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Through its selected experts' presentations and panel discussion, the#CovidImpactOnAirQuality workshop will review the data collected on air quality across Europe during the COVID-19 lockdown, primarily in urban areas, but also covering rural areas and compare these with previous years. Based on the available data, experts will discuss the possible need to revise methods to evaluate air quality in cities, the possible effect of the COVID-19 lockdown learnings on future air quality and new emission standards as well as the needs for further research activities on this topic.

The agenda is articulated as follow:

9:30 - 9:40: Introduction and Objectives of the Workshop with  Stephan Neugebauer.

9:40 - 11:20: 5 talks

  • Impact of Covid-19 lockdown period on air quality across Europe based on in-situ monitoring data.
    Evrim Ozturk, European Environment Agency (TBC)
  • Analysis of changes in air quality during the lockdown period in Europe.
    Prof. Ranjeet S Sokhi, University of Hertfordshire, UK
  • Conclusions drawn from air quality model simulations with emphasis on meteorology and the emissions ;
    Prof. Nicolas Moussiopoulos, Aristotle University, GR
  • What are the possible effects on air quality of future emission interventions?
    Prof. Peter Sturm, Graz University of Technology, AT
  • The role of air pollution in the COVID-19 ;
    Dr. Miriam Gerlofs-Nijland, RIVM, NL

11:20 - 11:30: break

11:30 - 13:00: Panel discussion with all speakers and the contribution of Dr. Gladys Moréac-Njeim from ;

Interested? Join us next 21 September from 9:30 to learn of the possible need to revise methods used to evaluate air quality in cities, the possible effect of the COVID-19 lockdown learnings on future air quality and new emission standards as well as the needs for the further research activities on this scientific topic
