If done correctly, charging road users for their use of road infrastructure can contribute to the reduction of emissions from the transport sector. The European Commission is currently preparing its proposal for the review of the Eurovignette directive, which sets the parameters by which member states can toll roads. This revision provides an ample opportunity to link the Directive with Europe’s ambition to transition to low-emission mobility.

Kindly hosted by MEP Ismail Ertug, this event focuses on the importance of charging road users to reduce CO2 emissions. The necessary expansion of the toll to account for the CO2 performance of trucks, combined with the expansion of the toll to include both cars and vans, are all tools to promote clean mobility. Furthermore, tolls can be a means for member states to secure revenue for the public budget to compensate for an inevitable decline in fuel tax revenue that will go hand-in-hand with reducing oil use in transport.
