Animal feed plays an important role in the food supply chain and in the safety and quality of food products. Feed safety and quality is therefore very important to the agricultural, feed and food sectors. Feed is composed of different materials (agricultural, by-products of food and drink manufacture and additives) in different proportions depending on the species and age of livestock. With demands and expectations on feed supply and livestock production ever increasing, the sourcing and use of feed materials of appropriate safety and quality will become more challenging. It is important therefore to understand the issues in relation to the production of feeds and their use in livestock production.
