Mr Jos Delbeke graduated from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1977 with a Master’s Degree in Economics and in 1986 with a PhD in Economics. In parallel, he worked as a Research Assistant and a Professor in Economics and briefly joined the International Monetary Fund in 1985, before entering the European Commission in 1986. He started his career in the EU public service as an Administrator and was subsequently promoted to Head of Unit on Economic Analysis and Environmental Perspective in DG Environment in 1994 and Head of Unit for Climate Change in DG Environment between 1999 and 2003, while also heading the EU Task Force during the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002. In 2003, he became Director for Climate Change, Air Quality and Chemical Substances in DG Environment, before being Deputy Director-General of DG Environment and Director-General of DG Climate Action after its creation in 2010. Mr Jos Delbeke has thus played a key role in the formulation of the EU climate policies. He has also been a Fellow in Economics at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven since 2004 and co-authored the book "EU Climate Policy Explained" in 2015.
