The rapid development of Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs) and their widespread adoption over recent years has made them a very common and important tool to increase the situational awareness and the effectiveness of commercial flight operations.

The growth of EFB has helped operators achieve important operational and safety goals. At the same time, the increased scope and usage of EFB makes it more difficult and complex for Aviation Authorities to efficiently evaluate and approve EFB software applications for the use in operations. In this context, the current Operational Approval process starts to highlight its weakness and limited rigor in supporting the more complex and critical functionalities, such as performance computation and safety-related intended uses.

The objective of this EFB ETSO Workshop is to inform all the relevant stakeholders about the availability of the new EFB software ETSO approval process, that will leverage a structured development process deemed required for the most advanced and critical applications.

EASA considers this as an opportunity to be informed and to be prepared for the future and is open to receive feedback on the proposed approach.
