Media freedom is essential to protect human rights and safeguard participation in the public sphere.
Regulating it is challenging, as proven by the extensive debates that have emanated from the recent publication of the proposal of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) by the European Commission.
The panel will look at the EMFA as a cornerstone of European Media Regulation from different angles and address the following questions in particular: What is the path ahead for the proposal? Can it achieve the objectives pursued and promote media pluralism across Member States? Which provisions need to be changed? Does the EU have the competence for such a European Media Regulation? The debate will bring together journalists, publishers, policy-makers, academics and civil society to discuss the road ahead for regulation of media in Europe.
