Associação dos Inquilinos Lisbonenses (AIL), in cooperation with the International Union of Tenants (IUT), is holding an online event to discuss with MEP Kim Van Sparrentak and other guests the great challenge and opportunities that the Initiative Report on Access to Decent and Affordable Housing for All represents for the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU and the future of the right to housing in the EU Member States.
This is a historic moment for the right to housing and European citizenship for two reasons: First, because the EU finally recognizes the issue of housing as a human and social right for all on its agenda. In terms of housing, it is an innovative institutional positioning, as the EU characterizes its policy in these matters, as it relegates the management of this portfolio to the Member States, which are the ones who have their own competences to define, plan and intervene with national housing policies. The text now approved by MEPs calls on the Member States to promote measures to correct inequalities in the housing market. The Commission will have to react to this own-initiative report and propose appropriate legislative and financial measures to be agreed and approved by the EU Member States.
This event will be livestreamed on the AIL
