Over the past several decades, both the volume and complexity of global trade have risen exponentially, with greater levels of liberalization, the rise of new trading powers, and advances in technology. However, in recent years, increasing political contestation, a turn toward protectionism by major economic powers, and roadblocks at the multilateral level have put enormous pressure on the global trade regime. This panel seeks to advance the debate on the complex dynamics that are currently reshaping the global trading system, and especially to understand global perspectives on the recent major structural and political challenges to this system. This panel will look closely at the intersection of trade and global governance in uncertain times, with special attention to perspectives from different regions of the world, including China, Europe, the United States and Africa.

ABOUT GLOBE:

Funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 program, the Project “Global Governance and the European Union: Future Trends and Scenarios” (GLOBE) addresses the strategic priorities identified in the EU Global Strategy such as – trade, development, security and climate change – as well as migration and global finance, in order to identify the major roadblocks to effective and coherent global governance by multiple stakeholders in a multipolar world. GLOBE seeks to provide policy makers, academics and the general public with an analytical grip on the state of play in global governance, by developing new theoretical and methodological approaches. It also hopes to equip national and European policy makers with tools to identify constraints and opportunities in a set of global governance scenarios for 2030 and 2050.
