26th ENCATC Congress on Cultural Management and Policy

From 26-29 September in Bucharest Romania, the 26th ENCATC Congress will focus on "Beyond EYCH2018. What is the cultural horizon? Opening up perspectives to face ongoing transformations".

ENCATC, the European network on cultural management and policy, is organsing its 2018 Congress ""Beyond EYCH2018. What is the cultural horizon? Opening up perspectives to face ongoing transformations" from 26-29 September in Bucharest, ;

Hosted in the premises of the Romanian Ministry of Culture, the Congress will gather academics, researchers, decision makers, experts, practitioners, artists, students and media from different world regions.

Organised in partnership with our member, The National Institute for Cultural Research and Training (INCFC), the Congress will be the opportunity to access the latest advancements in cultural management and cultural policy education, training, practice, and research.

Hosted in the capital city of Bucharest, the programme will include: keynote speeches on the ongoing cultural transformations; exciting debates on the related implications in terms of heritagisation and interdisciplinary dialogue; study visits to contextualize the main topics of the Congress; a poster session to exchange knowledge on best practices of heritage-based innovation, arising from synergies between disciplines, sectors and civil society; the 5th Annual ENCATC Research Award Ceremony; the ENCATC Education & Research Session; and the 11th Young and Emerging Researchers' Forum; as well as opportunities to challenge present cultural management and policy education, research and ;

 

WHY THIS THEME? 

Culture is changing directions. New beliefs, customs and norms; new symbols and languages; new concepts and paradigms; new demands and expressions, are emerging and impacting the behaviours of individuals and communities, and organisations as well. Indeed, people around the world are changing. They are facing radical challenges that are transforming their ways of thinking, interacting, working and living at different levels. We all are witnesses and protagonists of a wide world transition shaped by various phenomena that are upsetting the main referent points upon which we have built or destroyed values, identities, economies and lives.

This major international gathering will focus on the ongoing cultural transformations and claims according to a socio-anthropological approach to critically analyse and contextualize the role of education and research in shaping the process by which culture and values are built, transmitted and appropriated, and to re-frame with new views, approaches and perspectives their contributions to a common European Cultural Heritage, its sustainability and exploitation for inclusive growth.

 

KEY QUESTIONS:

We cannot disregard how the planet sustainability, intercultural interaction, terrorism, and the digital shift are shocking, breaking down, and transforming our individual, societal and economic symbols, status and order, towards unknown dimensions and directions.

In the framework of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, ENCATC calls on the need to define in advance a response to these great ongoing ;A call to open up for a deeper reflection on the intersections between past- present- and future-making practices and legacies, for a contingent approach to cultural management and policy education, research and practice and for innovative research to build comprehensive forward-looking scenarios, knowledge, skills and competences to enable such a transition.

During the Congress eminent experts from all over the world will share different points of view, analyse the latest research available, and answer questions: 

  • What is the cultural horizon for Europeans?
  • Are we maintaining cultural continuity or disrupting it?
  • How do we reconcile the old order with the new one?
  • How can we take into account every upheaval affecting our countries, European values, and affecting us and our organisations on a daily basis?


OPEN CALLS: 

1. ENCATC EDUCATION AND RESEARCH SESSION

ENCATC is accepting submissions to the Open Call for the 2018 Education and Research Session to be held on 28 September in Bucharest, Romania during the 2018 ENCATC Congress

Now until 5 June 2018, the Open Call welcomes submissions on themes related to the main topic of the Congress, “Beyond EYCH2018. What is the cultural horizon? Opening up perspectives to face ongoing transformations” or from any relevant discipline, provided they make an original academic and professional contribution to the study and practice of cultural management and cultural ;There are three types of submissions in the call, each with its own online form:

  • Submit an abstract with the aim to present your latest in cultural management and cultural policy research. All accepted papers will be published in an electronic book of proceedings (with ISBN) which will be published for the Congress. The electronic book of proceedings may include papers in English and French.
  • Submit a proposal for the Poster Exhibition to present a research, practical or pedagogical project within cultural management and policy and with a connection to the main theme of the Congress.
  • Submit a proposal for a Teaching Demonstration to provide innovative teaching methods and pedagogical tools to be applied within cultural management and policy.

2. ENCATC RESEARCH AWARD 

ENCATC is accepting applications for the 5th ENCATC Research Award on Cultural Policy and Cultural Management. The Award is granted to a recently published PhD thesis (up to 4 years after completion of the thesis) exploring topical issues at stake and taking a step from evaluative (descriptive) to innovative and internationally oriented research designs. In addition, it is rewarded to a PhD thesis that can inform policy making and benefit practitioners in the broad field of culture.

Granted each year, the Award consists of the translation of the winning PhD thesis into English and its publication in the ENCATC Book Series on Cultural Management and Cultural Policy Education, a new series of publications specialising in topics related to cultural management and cultural policy headed by ENCATC. The international dissemination of the ENCATC Book Series is ensured by Peter Lang, an international publishing group.

The 2018 winner will be announced at the 5th ENCATC Research Award Ceremony on 27 September in Bucharest, Romania, held during the 26th ENCATC Annual Congress "Beyond EYCH2018. What is the cultural horizon? Opening up perspectives to face ongoing transformations" (26-29 September 2018).
