The workshop is the third in a series of workshops jointly organised by National Rectors’ Conferences and the European University Association (EUA) through its RIS3 Expert Group. event will take place on 17 October 2017 and will be kindly hosted by the University of Tartu.

2017 marks a crucial year for universities engaged in regional innovation. European policy-makers, the university sector and many other stakeholders are taking stock of past achievements in Research and Innovation Smart Specialisation Strategies (RIS3) with a view to defining the priorities for the post-2020 period.

Organised in the framework of the activities of the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the goal of the workshop on “Universities in regional innovation ecosystems: coherent policies for Europe beyond 2020” is to provide an open platform for discussion on societal aims and policy objectives for the post-2020 period. A primary objective of the workshop will be to agree upon a set of recommendations to feed into the EUA positions proposing actions to improve the effectiveness of European research and innovation at regional level. The workshop will also serve as a forum to further identify challenges and opportunities related to the strategic role of universities in implementing RIS3 across Europe.

The workshop is addressed at university leaders ( rectors, vice-rectors, heads of administration), municipal, regional and national policy-makers, and other stakeholders interested in regional ;

Markku Markkula, First Vice-President of the European Committee of the Regions, is among the confirmed speakers for the event.
