The Eurasian Customs Union (ECU) or the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia came into existence on 1 January 2010. The Customs Union was launched as a step towards forming a European Union-like economic alliance of former Soviet states which allowed a single economic space where most internal trade has been liberalised.The legislation in the ECU is in many ways similar but also uniquely different from EU food legislation.
