Roundtable debate - Rights-based approach to EU migration policies

The Role of Trade Union Network on Mediterranean and Sub-Saharian Migrants

15:00 - 17:30 - Venue: Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Rue du Taciturne 38, 1000 BrusselsRecognizing the lack of a coherent and strategic approach to its migration policy, the EU is developing a new European Agenda on Migration. This re-design of the EU policy approach to migration should shift away from security-oriented and short-termist policy actions, and move towards an inclusive rights-based approach to migration, neighborhood and development policy. This could be established only by ensuring policy coherence with other key EU policy process such as the revision of the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP) and the Post-2015 development agenda.Within this context, on the 9th and 10th of February, SOLIDAR together with CGIL, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and UGTT will welcome to Brussels a delegation of 20 representatives from European, Southern Mediterranean and Sub Saharan Countries from the Trade Union Network on Mediterranean and Sub Saharan Migrants, to organize 2 training sessions and a round table to meet with EU officials and discuss key issues related to EU policy processes on migration, neighborhood and development policies. The Round Table “Rights-Based Approach to Migration: The Role of Trade Union Network on Mediterranean and Sub-Saharian Migrants” will take place on the 10th of February from 15:00 -17:30, and it will focus on:Promoting Rights-based approach to migration: the role of the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP).Promoting a rights-based approach to migration in the framework of the sustainable development goals. The round table aims to strengthen solidarity and common actions between unions of countries of departure and destination and transit countries, sub-Saharan, North African and European workers’ unions, as well as to enhance and strengthen dialogue between workers’ unions, civil society from northern and southern Mediterranean countries and the European Commission.Registration will close on 3rd February 2015Organisations involvedThe Trade Union Network on Mediterranean and Sub Saharan Migrants (RSMMS), UGTT Tunisia, CGIL, UMT, CGTM, CARISM, USTN, SNAPAP in Algeria, EFITU, EDLC in Egypt, FENASOL in Lebanon, CLTM Mauritanie, CDT Morocco, CGTP-IN in Portugal, CCOO, UGT and USO in Spain, CFTD and CGT in France, UIL in Italy, FGTB in Belgium, TURKIS and DISK in Turkey and UGTCI in Ivory Coast, the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), Friederich-Ebert-Foundation (FES), Public Services International (PSI), ACTRAV/ILO, SOLIDAR, International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
