DIVERCITIES: Melting Pots as Cradles of Innovation

A conference to offer a forum of discussion about urban multiculturalism and about the challenges and opportunities of diversity in European cities.

Modern life is undoubtedly urban. Already half of the world’s population lives in cities. By 2050 the total urban population is expected to double. Diversity is the main constituent of cities, at least of successful ones, and that is what makes them the true beacons of innovation, of change. Cities is where the future is made. But the increased diversity often also brings along tensions and contradictions, linked to the conditions of emargination and exclusion of some groups of people. How can cities be managed correctly to avoid these tension? How to profit from diversity and its enormous potential in fostering growth and innovation? How can European cities make the best of their potential, while at the same time minimising its risk?UNITEE, the New European Business Confederation, is organising this conference on the 19th of November to offer a forum of discussion about urban multiculturalism on the basis of the publication of the third edition of its magazine The New European, “Divercities”. Academics, politicians, experts and entrepreneurs are invited to share their opinion and analyse the opportunities and challenges of urban multiculturalism in more detail.Draft Programme14:30h Welcome Words14:35h Introductory speech by Adem KUMCU, President of UNITEE14:45h Short keynote speeches by panelists followed by discussionThe panel includes:Meghan BENTON, Policy Analyst at the Migration Policy Institute, author of “The immigration innovation”Thomas JÉZÉQUEL, Policy Advisor for Social Inclusion at EUROCITIES, author of “Cities as inclusive employers”Richard HOWITT, MEP and Member of the Urban IntergroupModerated by Giovanni COLLOT, Editor in-Chief of The New European.16:00h Q&A sessionThe conference is followed by a cocktail.
