EU-Canada Free Trade Agreement

What's in it for the Green Economy?

The Belgian-Italian Chamber of Commerce organises the International Conference “EU-Canada Free Trade Agreement: What’s in it for the Green Economy?” on 27 June 2013, at the European Parliament, in Brussels, as closure event of an 18-month project funded by the European Union. The Belgian-Italian Chamber of Commerce is the primary partner and co-financier of the project with the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada- West (ICCC). The two Italian Chambers of Commerce have carried out a series of activities in the EU and in Canada, whose aim is to instil the importance of the benefits that the approval of the "Comprehensive Economic & Trade Agreement" CETA will bring to people and institutions, especially from the commercial and the environmental point of view. The purpose of the conference is to underline the advantages of EU-Canada cooperation presenting the institutional perspective on the CETA and pointing out the advantages and the opportunities for SMEs, with particular attention to the environment and the Green Economy.Canada and the EU have a long history of economic cooperation. Both share the view that sustainable development and economy are as well key elements to the well-being of their respective societies. Both are active players on sustainable development issues (including their environmental, social and economic aspects), domestically and internationally, and recognize the important contribution that trade and investment policy can play in the development of those objectives. The Conference is organized at the European Parliament (EP) and is hosted by the German Member of the EP (MEP) Silvana Koch-Mehrin, who is in charge of the Committee on International Trade and has been involved in the negotiations on the economic and trade agreement between the EU and Canada. The event is accredited within theEU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), an initiative of the European Commission, which first took place in 2006. Today, EUSEW is coordinated by the Executive Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation, in close cooperation with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy. EU Sustainable Energy Week showcases activities dedicated to energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions. It is designed to spread best practices, inspire new ideas and build alliances to help meet the EU’s energy and climate goals.CETA is a key priority for both Canadian and European leaders. Such an agreement will encourage growth, serving to create more opportunities, jobs and prosperity through increased trade and investment. It would also send a strong signal to the world that Canada and the EU reject economic protectionism and are committed to opening markets. Negotiators on both sides continue working towards its successful conclusion.
