The European Banking Union

A Turning Point?

ContentsThe Banking Union proposal of the European Commission presented on 6 June 2012 and 12 September 2012 represents one of the most fervently debated solutions to the current financial crisis with a view to securing a forward-looking perspective on the future of the EU’s Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). The introduction of the single supervisory mechanism (SSM) and the allocation of new powers to the European Central Bank (ECB) will radically change the pre-existing pan-European supervisory regime. The proposed steps towards the creation of a Banking Union also include plans to accelerate work on a plethora of existing and proposed EU legislation – i.e. Bank Recovery and Resolution (BRR) framework, Capital Requirements Directive (CRD), Directive on Deposit Guarantee Schemes (DGS). Leading experts, regulators and policymakers will offer an in-depth legal and economic analysis of the proposed measures as well as their impact on the future of the EMU and the entire banking sector.Key topicsKey aspects of the EU Banking UnionCrisis management in the EUSingle supervisory mechanismInteraction between supervisory powers of the ECB, EBA and national regulatorsBank recovery and resolution toolsRelevant legislation and proposals: i.e. BRR, DGS, CRD IV and Basel III aspects
