The role of diet in health and disease is an ever-increasing area of interest for the food industry, and this is reflected by the large number of available functional food products that offer improved health or reduced disease risk. Nutrition is beginning to influence all aspects of product development, branding, marketing and legislation, meaning that an increasing number of individuals have to address nutrition-related issues on a daily basis.This new course is designed to deliver the nutrition information required by industry to address these issues. Leatherhead’s nutrition experts will deliver a programme that focuses on the five key areas identified for health claims by EFSA (the body responsible for reviewing and recommending health claims for EU approval), and will give examples of functional foods addressing these areas. The team will also explain the fundamental science behind these foods and demonstrate how they work. Examples of EFSA approved claims will be given and discussed where relevant.
