Full title: Scientific Neocolonialism: tools and mechanisms to advocate and amplify the voices, knowledge and recognition of local knowledge in geoscience research Following on from the success of the EGU22 Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee Union Symposium 'Scientific Neocolonialism: What is it and why should you care?', EGU would like to expand the conversation surrounding this important topic. In particular, this Great Debate aimed to hear from people that have experienced neocolonialism in science, to acknowledge the issues, explore solutions that our scientific community and the EGU can implement to raise awareness, and discuss examples to eliminate neocolonialism from our geoscience ecosystem. In particular, the Debate continued conversations on the following questions: - Why is it vital that local communities participate in geoscientific research? - Which barriers are preventing inclusion of local communities within the geoscience research ecosystem (this will include personal testimonials from geoscientists from under-represented countries)? - What are the tools and mechanisms to advocate and amplify the voices and recognition of local knowledge in geoscience research? - How can research funding help geoscientists construct meaningful and fair scientific exchange with local communities where international science is conducted? - How can institutions help geoscientists to conduct science including local communities? This Great Debate features the following contributors: - Dr Helen Glaves, EGU President, British Geological Survey data scientist. - Dr Rebecca Haacker, Director National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Education & Outreach, Program Director for Integrated Activities, Geosciences Directorate, National Science Foundation. - Ms Wendy Khumalo, Palaeoclimatology PhD candidate, The National Laboratory of Age Determination, Norwegian University of Science and Technology. - Dr Tim Rawling, Chief Executive Officer, AuScope Limited, committee member Geoscience Indigenous Collaboration and Engagement Specialist Group. - Dr Anouk Beniest, Department of Geology and Geochemistry, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Convener: Robyn Pickering Co-conveners: Anouk Beniest, Barbara Ervens, Giuliana Panieri, Loyuá Costa EDITORS NOTE: All opinions, statements and questions are the speakers own and do not necessarily reflect the European Geosciences Union, but have been shared here in the name of supporting open, transparent and unedited discussion on this topic. science Does the paternal microbiome impact the health of offspring?
Does the paternal microbiome impact the health of offspring?
1 May 2024
European Molecular B...
The gut microbiota is the microbial community that occupies the gastrointestinal tract, which is responsible for producing enzymes and molecules essential for host metabolism and for response and adaptation to the environment. Increasing evidence demonstrates the importance of a balanced gut microbiota for mammalian health, for example in regulating the immune and endocrine systems, or in digesting food and producing vitamins. However, little is known about the impact of the microbial community in the gut on host reproduction, and if the consequences of an altered paternal microbiota influence the next generation. The Hackett group at EMBL Rome showed that disrupting the gut microbiota in male mice increases the probability that their offspring are born with low weight, have severe growth restriction, and die prematurely. Their unprecedented findings might help to prevent some birth complications in humans. Are recent US developments in biotechnology and national security impacting UK companies? This webinar explores the implications of the BIOSECURE Act and President Biden's Executive Order on data privacy, including genomic data, biometric data, personal health data, geolocation data and financial data. If the BIOSECURE bill, introduced by a bipartisan group of Select Committee Members in the US Senate and the House goes through, it could severely impact US companies’ ability and desire to contract with biotechnology entities from China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. Moreover, the bill also specifically names certain companies related to the People’s Republic of China —BGI, MGI, Complete Genomics, WuXi AppTec, and their affiliates—as companies of concern. How are UK life science companies responding to these developments and what does it mean for our ecosystem? Join us on this webinar to learn more about how the environment may change with these developments, and what they mean for UK companies looking to expand and develop overseas.

Whole genome sequencing was crucial in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic—from real-time monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 spread and evolution, to guiding public health responses, treatments, and vaccine development. Building on this, Struelens et al. advocate for integration of pathogen genomic data and epidemiological data into globally interconnected One Health surveillance systems. Their lead article outlines necessary enablers for deploying real-time genomic surveillance of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance worldwide—including data-sharing platforms, new sequencing technologies, and cross-sector collaborations. Our oceans are facing a crisis. With the help of #algae there are many ways to tackle these problems and restore our waters. The LOCALITY project develops circular and sustainable value chains from algae, linking industrial players to stimulate co-creation and bring new and innovative algae-based products to regional and global markets while protecting and restoring Europe’s aquatic ecosystems. LOCALITY sets the basis for the market uptake of innovative, socially responsible, and sustainable food, aquafeed ingredients, agriculture, and textile products. For these products algae biomasses and ingredients from side streams and the Baltic and North Seas are used. The project further demonstrate their social and economic benefits, define commercialisation strategies and ensure consumer and market acceptance. Project results, developed technologies, and products to relevant stakeholders, thus fostering the replication of such circular ecosystems are disseminated. In this animation video we take the viewer on a journey of what the project is developing. Participatory Turns: The bumpy roads to recognition of participatory approaches in the social sciences, and lessons for citizen science The integration of societal participation into the production of scientific knowledge stands as a core principle within citizen science. Although participatory methods have a long tradition in the social sciences — exemplified by participatory action research in fields like sociology, education, and anthropology — a historical examination unveils the intricacies and obstacles tied to these methods' acceptance and application. Historically, participatory research often found recognition only on the fringes of academic discourse, encountering structural and power-related barriers. Moreover, the demarcation between political engagement and social science research was a recurring dilemma.

medicine French practical guidelines for the diagnosis and management of Relapsing Polychondritis (RP)
French practical guidelines for the diagnosis and management of Relapsing Polychondritis (RP)
19 Apr 2024
ERN ReCONNET
Short description The webinar is focused on the French practical guidelines for the diagnosis and management of relapsing Polychondritis (RP). RP usually begins in middle-aged individuals. This diagnosis is mainly suggested in the presence of chondritis, i.e. inflammatory flares on the cartilage, in particular of the ears, nose or respiratory tract, and more rarely in the presence of other manifestations. The formal diagnosis of relapsing polychondritis cannot be established with certainty before the onset of chondritis, which can sometimes occur several years after the first signs. No laboratory test is specific of relapsing polychondritis, the diagnosis is usually based on clinical evidence and the elimination of differential diagnoses. Relapsing polychondritis is a long-lasting and often unpredictable disease, evolving in the form of relapses interspersed with periods of remission that can be very prolonged. Its management is not codified and depends on the nature of the patient’s symptoms and association or not with myelo-dysplasia/vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X linked, autoinflammatory, somatic (VEXAS). Some minor forms can be treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or a short course of corticosteroids with possibly a background treatment of colchicine. However, the treatment strategy is often based on the lowest possible dosage of corticosteroids combined with background treatment with conventional immunosuppressants (e.g. methotrexate, azathioprine, mycophenolate mofetil, rarely cyclophosphamide) or targeted therapies. Specific strategies are required if relapsing polychondritis is associated with myelodysplasia/VEXAS. Forms limited to the cartilage of the nose or ears have a good prognosis. Involvement of the cartilage of the respiratory tract, cardiovascular involvement, and association with myelodysplasia/VEXAS (more frequent in men over 50 years of age) are detrimental to the prognosis of the disease. Speaker Prof. Laurent Arnaud (MD, PhD) is full Professor of Rheumatology at Strasbourg University & Academic Hospitals (France). He obtained his medical degree and a PhD in immunology from Paris University. His main clinical interests focus on the care of patients with autoimmune diseases such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and relapsing polychondritis (RP). He is leading a research group focusing on innovative strategies to study the epidemiology of autoimmune diseases, with a particular interest for the use of novel diagnostic and therapeutic digital strategies based on big data and Artificial Intelligence. With his team at the French National Reference Center for Rare Autoimmune Diseases of Strasbourg (CRMR RESO), he has published more than 200 articles in the field of rare diseases. Professor Arnaud is currently the President of the European Lupus Society (SLEuro) and Disease Coordinator for Lupus and relapsing polychondritis of the ERN ReCONNET. He is the curator of a twitter account (@Lupusreference) followed by more than 15.5k people. Unveiling Antarctica’s secrets: new research brings us one step closer to predicting the future of the icy continent In this press conference, we present ground-breaking research findings that shed light on environmental change in Antarctica. In one study from the highly-studied Brunt Ice Shelf, researchers are combining ice cores, seismic surveys and modelling techniques to unravel the mysteries of iceberg calving, providing valuable insights into the processes driving this phenomenon. A second study, part of the UK-US-led International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration used seismic surveys to visualise the bedrock beneath Thwaites Glacier. The results of this study will feed into models which will give us new insights into the future of this unstable glacier. These studies represent significant strides in our understanding of the changes taking place in Antarctica, and their potential implications for global sea level rise. As new discoveries emerge from NASA’s Juno mission, observing the Jovian moon Io, another study examining asteroid fragments provides new data about the gas giant itself. An unique family of rare meteorite fragments has revealed the influence that Jupiter’s instability had on the evolution of our Solar System, particularly the asteroid belt between us, as late as 60-100 myr after its formation. Even as these fragments provide new understanding of Jupiter, NASA’s Juno Mission delivers brand new thermal data that indicates the presence of endogenic heat flow on Io, providing new information about the moon’s composition. Europe´s Extreme Droughts - Can Treated Wastewater Help?

ESCI - European Scie...
In the summer 2022 Europe was hit by the worst #drought in 500 years. A warning level was in place for 47% of European countries and in many places, people saw their #soil completely dry up. Severe droughts, exacerbated by climate change, particularly affect southern regions like Spain, Portugal, and Greece. Scientists are exploring new methods like #wastewater recycling are being explored to combat water scarcity. In 2018 researchers in Tossa de Mar, Spain and elsewhere started a project called “NextGen” to produce high-quality water from municipal wastewater which meets both treated water and drinking water regulations. This recycled water is already being used for irrigation, reducing pressure on freshwater sources. Experts say it’s important we use circular economy principles to manage water. They advocate for efficient water recovery, energy, and nutrient recycling to mitigate pollution and reduce water usage. But regulatory challenges still exist, with some standards demanding treated wastewater quality akin to drinking water, posing financial and practical hurdles. Spain’s approach, with a more pragmatic, risk-based regulation, balances safety with feasibility in wastewater reuse. These initiatives signify a crucial step towards sustainable water management amidst escalating climate challenges. The NextGen project was completed in 2022. The EGU General Assembly is comprised of numerous and diverse sessions, covering subjects from scientific to social. All of these are organised by community members. However, convening a session can be a little daunting, especially to those without experience such as first-time conveners and early career scientists. This webinar provided key tips on convening sessions, informed on the guidance for #EGU24, and answered audience queries. Speaking in this was Dan Evans, the Deputy Union-level Early Career Scientist Representative. Dan drew on his own experience of convening at multiple General Assemblies, including how to keep sessions running on time, introducing your speakers, and what is new for EGU’s hybrid posters. Audience's heard about engaging with OSPP awards and early steps to submitting and convening sessions for EGU25. The webinar lasted one hour and finished with an audience Q&A. Speaker: Dan Evans is a Lecturer in Soil Science at Cranfield University, UK. He is the Deputy Union-Level Early Career Scientist Representative, was previously the ECS Representative for the Soil System Sciences (SSS) Division. Dan has a wealth of experience of organizing and chairing national and international conferences. In recent years, he chaired the Early Career Researcher conference for the British Society of Soil Science, hosting HRH The Duke of Gloucester, an ECR session for the European Soil Observatory, and his contributions are recognized at this year’s EGU General Assembly with an Arne Richter Award for Outstanding Early Career Scientists. Dan has attended seven EGU General Assembles, and has convened sessions, short courses, townhalls, splinter meetings, and networking events since 2018. The devastating impacts of climate change are ever-more apparent—including on our health. Asthma, allergies, cancers, and other immune-mediated diseases are on the rise, with the burden falling hardest on the world’s most vulnerable people. Agache et al. describe the links between climate change, environmental exposures, and immune dysregulation and its associated diseases. Their lead article also recommends equitable, global, and multilevel mitigation and adaptation solutions to reduce the impact of climate change on human health. Ask the experts: Young leaders showcase gender perspectives in the HIV response
27 Mar 2024
IAS – the Internat...
Adolescent girls and young women bear a disproportionate burden in the HIV response. In 2022, adolescent girls and young women constituted 77% of new HIV acquisitions in central, eastern, southern and western Africa with HIV acquisition three times higher than in boys and young men of the same age (UNAIDS, 2022). Data points to a clear shortage of gender-sensitive, youth-friendly and integrated HIV and reproductive health services designed for and by adolescent girls and young women. Young people currently account for 1.8 billion people globally, the largest generation of young people ever, 90% of whom live in low- and middle-income countries (UNAIDS, 2021). Yet the catalytic potential of young people, especially young women, in finding innovative solutions towards better health outcomes is critically underutilized. To unleash this potential, adolescent girls and young women must be engaged as beneficiaries, partners and leaders in initiatives that concern their health (UNAIDS, 2018) and be equipped with the necessary skills and leadership opportunities to execute bold and innovative ideas that are fine-tuned to their unique needs. For International Women’s Day, the IAS Youth Hub brought together four inspiring young women active in the HIV response for a virtual ask the experts style session. They provided participants with knowledge on the intersections of gender and the HIV response, guidance on how to overcome gender specific challenges and inspired other young people to be part of the movement. 27 Mar 2024
IAS – the Internat...
The introduction of long-acting products holds the potential to transform the HIV prevention and treatment landscape, offering dosing schedules that span months instead of days. However, they could face various implementation challenges similar to those encountered by oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), including issues related to cost, delivery, uptake and persistent use, particularly in resource-constrained settings and among key populations. The guest editors and authors of the JIAS supplement https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/17582652/2023/26/S2 published in July 2023 offer a comprehensive overview of the ongoing research on long-acting regimens access, delivery and choice. This symposium features community perspectives, explores future directions in the field, and concludes with a panel discussion.
