Dr Joachim Schüz is Head of the Environment and Lifestyle Epidemiology Branch at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the cancer research agency of the World Health Organisation, located in Lyon, France (IARC/WHO). The Branch leads the IARC/WHO research on causes and primary prevention of cancer on occupational hazards, environmental contaminants (e.g., pesticides and other chemicals), some lifestyle factors, and radiations (nuclear accidents, medical radiation, electromagnetic fields).

Dr Schüz is a cancer epidemiologist with 28 years of experience in these fields. He is also Chair of Cancer Prevention Europe, a network of cancer research and prevention institutions in Europe, and Principal Investigator of the European Code against Cancer. Dr Schüz has been heading the environmental research at IARC/WHO for the past 10 years; before arriving at IARC/WHO he worked in cancer epidemiology at the Danish Cancer Society Research Center (Copenhagen, Denmark) and at the University of Mainz (Germany), where he received his PhD in cancer epidemiology in 1997 and his habilitation in 2002.
