Within DG REGIO, unit D2 "Interreg, Cross-Border Cooperation, internal borders" is in charge of the implementation of Cross-Border Cooperation programmes (Intereg).

Furthermore, following the adoption of the Communication "Boosting growth and cohesion in EU border regions" and the creation of the Border Focal Point, it also supports cross-border cooperation with other tools than funding, as described in that ;
