Human Rights, Independence, and Self-Determination

State oppression and human rights abuses

The principle of self-determination is established on international law, which highlights that nations have the right to freely choose their national sovereignty and international political status without external interference. In addition, the international law refers also to the right of a people to determine their own political stand. According to the first article of the Charter of the United Nations “All peoples have the right to self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural ; However, beyond the broad definition, there are no particularly legal criteria that determine which groups may claim the right to self-determination, and under what conditions.

In this light, it is important to discuss the obligations the States and the international community should comply to. What is the current state of affairs regarding unilateral declarations of independence, and under what conditions the right to self-determination be claimed. How should the international community address the human rights abuses faced in oppressed regions?
The World Solidarity Forum (WSF) believes that human rights should be enjoyed by every human being without exception and that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. It is essential to discuss these challenges and pursue comprehensible solutions in order to build a better future for everyone.
