With the highest voters turnout in 20 years in the May 2019 European elections, it is clear that European citizens expect change in the European Union and on its policy-making impact, but what has triggered this renewed interest at a time where Europe and the European Union are put into question? Local campaigning and new media has led to innovative campaign strategies of political parties, candidates, and political organizations. They reshaped election media coverage, influenced voter engagement and asserted that the European institutions certainly remain at the heart of national politics across the ;

Will these changes structurally impact the European decision-making process, enhance the role of the civil society, and create a more engaging  and engaged Europe?
Euraffex invites you to this Power Breakfast debate to dive into these issues together with elected representatives from the European Parliament, civil society, the European Commission and ;

The debate will aim to answer some of the following questions: 

  • Have the 2019 elections boosted the legitimacy of the EU institutions?
  • What are the preliminary consequences of this regained turnout on decision-making?
  • Are we seeing a more assertive European citizenship so as to create more accountable European institutions?
  • To what extent have new media streams in politics changed the way campaigns are run?
  • What efforts have the EU done to engage its institutions and what needs to change?

Speakers

Karen Melchior: Renew Europe MEP, former Danish Diplomat, data protection lawyer and a longtime European supporter, putting her expertise in digital to reconnect Europe.

Alva Finn: Senior Advocacy Advisor for Save the Children International Office in Brussels, expert in the fields of Human rights, development and health.

Alberto Alemanno: Founder of the Good Lobby, renown academic, Professor at HEC Paris and political activist, involved in civic and civil campaigns around Europe.

Ricardo Borges de Castro: Advisor in the European Political Strategy Center in Political Science and former personal assistant and member of cabinet to José Manuel Barroso.
