Today, Europe’s building stock accounts for 36% of CO2 emissions at EU level. This means that European cities will have to accelerate the deployment of renewable energies beyond the energy system and foster significant investments in energy efficiency if they want to become carbon-neutral by 2050.
To achieve this goal, the EU needs to increase building renovation rates and put forward highly innovative and efficient construction solutions that combine energy efficiency and renewable generation. In this context, solar technologies such as Building Integrated Photovoltaics (“BIPV”) are best positioned to push a deep decarbonisation of the EU building stock, while contributing to the Union’s climate and industrial leadership and to the creation of local jobs and businesses.
