The State of the Union 2017

BUILDING A PEOPLE’S EUROPE

The State of the Union conference is an annual event for high-level reflection on the European Union, organised by the European University Institute in Florence. Now in its seventh year, it has become a reference point in the EU agenda for policy-makers, civil society representatives, business and opinion leaders, and academics.

Under the title Building a People’s Europe, The State of the Union 2017 will revolve around the theme of European Citizenship. Sessions will deal with: the future of citizenship; direct democracy and populism; the impact of the global refugee emergency on Europe; the financial crisis; the labour market; and security, in a broad sense of the word.

Confirmed speakers include Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission; Donald Tusk, President of the @EuropeanCouncil; Antonio Tajani, President of the European Parliament; and Michel Barnier, the Commission’s ‘chief Brexit negotiator’.

They will be joined by a diverse selection of panellists including politicians, policy-makers, academics and journalists.
