European Commission's DG Environment - European Green Capital Handover

Since 2010, the European Green Capital Award has rewarded cities that show robust commitment to sustainable urban planning.

As the new European Green Capital, Ljubljana will act as ambassador for sustainable urban development, sharing its local, best practices and encouraging other cities across Europe to become greener, healthier and more sustainable. The Handover Ceremony will give you a taste of the year ahead: Ljubljana plans to dedicate each month of the year to a different environmental theme. The ceremony is not just an inauguration for the Slovenian capital; it will also highlight Bristol’s accomplishments as European Green Capital 2015. Bristol has already promoted the Bristol Method, its programme to help people in other cities understand and apply the lessons Bristol has learned in becoming more sustainable.Since 2010, the European Green Capital Award has rewarded cities that show robust commitment to sustainable urban planning. Winning cities are selected on the basis of their achievements and commitment in twelve key areas. Their applications are evaluated by an independent panel of experts, followed by a jury decision. The European Green Capital Award shows how cities benefit by pursuing green urban policies; policies that make cities more liveable, attract investment, create new jobs and growth, and raise their standing and appeal as tourist destinations.
