The Öresund region has a long tradition of high-level academic studies and research, stretching back to 1425 when the first Scandinavian university, Studium Generale, was founded in Lund. Today Lund University has approximately 40.000 students and is an acknowledged international centre for research and education. It is consistently ranked among the top 100 universities in the world. The Copenhagen University has 37.000 students and was opened as early as 1479.
