EU legislation related to rights of victims, suspected and accused persons in criminal proceedings has long been debated in EU criminal law; however, the process of bringing EU legislation fully in line with the standards set by the European Court of Human Rights is in progress. The seminar will follow the lines set up by the 2009 Roadmap of Strengthening procedural rights, the Stockholm Programme, and the Lisbon Treaty. The common minimum rules the EU has systematically proposed and adopted regarding the right to interpretation and translation, the right to information and right of access to a lawyer, as well as the right to communicate upon deprivation of liberty, will all be examined. The package of five legal measures launched by the Commission in November 2013 to further strengthen procedural safeguards for citizens in criminal proceedings, and to consolidate the foundation of the European Area of Criminal Justice will be also presented.
