A specialised day of training for those working with Anaerobic Digestion treating water and wastewaterPROGRAMME• Introduction to the day’s course and description of learning outcomes• Understanding the digestion process: the key reactions, the microorganisms and factors affecting the reaction rates (alkalinity, ammonia, pH total and volatile solids)• Digester operation: hydraulic retention time, organic loading rate (OLR), solids concentration and temperature - how they influence VS destruction and methane generation• Digester foaming: what is it, what causes it and how can it be prevented and controlled• Feeding, mixing and heating: the secret to successful digester operation• Digester biogas: composition and energy content. Best uses for gas (CHP, liquefied biomethane, clean up and grid injection); storage and flaring, contaminants and their removal (siloxanes, H2S, water, CO2)• Dewatering the digestate and handling the dewatering liquor: impact of sludge returns on process operation and energy usage. Options for liquor treatment: P recovery as struvite, ammonia removal through annamox reactions – the nutrient factory.• Advanced digestion. What are the advantages of advanced digestion. The key technologies (Monsal EEH, Cambi THP, Veolia Biothelys), where they are used and what they have achieved. Towards energy neutral wastewater treatment.• Course summary and group discussion
