Fuel cells and hydrogen belong to core solutions. Their deployment will help build a competitive, secure and sustainable economy as envisioned by the European Energy and Transport policies.A milestone international conference, organised in Brussels in 2003 in the presence of the President of the European Commission, several Ministers of EU Member States and the US Secretary of Energy, set the strategic vision for hydrogen and fuel cells technologies for the decade. From strategic vision to concrete resultsHigh-level speakers from industry, research and the public sector will meet on the occasion of the 2013 Stakeholder General Assembly of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) to take stock of the achievements of the European strategy and its direction going forward.Europe has achieved significant progress. The sector succeeded in turning its initial vision into concrete ambition. It has developed a joint public-private strategy implemented through the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking. This programme has provided a unique platform for cooperation, much-needed long-term stability for investment and - with a budget of almost €1 billion – concrete funding support for a portfolio of about 150 projects. The main results of this effort and plans for its future will be presented at the SGA.Fuel cells and hydrogen enabling European ambitionLooking ahead, the SGA will discuss the proposed continuation of the European FCH programme under Horizon 2020. Industry, research and the public sector are strongly committed to making fuel cells and hydrogen key enablers in achieving EU 2020 targets. Industry leaders will present their commitments and call upon European decision-makers to approve the proposal for a Regulation to continue the FCH JU with a total budget of €1.4 billion. With major FCH deployment initiatives being launched internationally, Europe needs to step up its efforts and materialize the potential benefits of fuel cells and hydrogen for its economy. More than 300 European and international stakeholders will participate in the SGA 2013 to make this event a success.
