Gallup will unveil the findings of its latest opinion poll conducted on the European election and the rise of euroscepticism related topics.

In a time where the crisis has had a manifold impact at all level, the belief there is a democratic deficit in the EU and a growing disconnect between the European citizens and their EU institutions has become widely shared across Europe. Despite the recent European Commission’s recommendations, including the fact political parties should nominate a candidate for European Commission President in the next European elections, and even though 2013 is the European Year of Citizens, the 2014 EU election may well suffer again from a very low turnout. Combined this time with a possible strong mobilisation of voters in favour of extreme, radical and anti-EU parties, the European democracy landscape may go under drastic changes. While political parties are preparing for the campaign and EU institutions are building and implementing new strategies to communicate around the event, a number of questions still need to be answered to foster a Europe-wide debate and ultimately improve voter turnout:•           What is the general interest in the EU election? And what makes a voter engaged?•           What will be the impact of the current crisis on voting behaviours?•        What could be the effect of the future accession of Croatia to the EU on the European electorates?•           Do people approve the job performance of the leadership of France or Germany in the EU?•           What should be the next EU election’s main campaign themes?•           Would the nationality of the proposed candidate for the presidency of the European Commission have an impact on voting behaviours?•           If they were given the choice through a referendum to be held next week, would Europeans leave the EU?Gallup Europe and the Institute for Advanced Behavioural Studies (IFABS) are pleased to invite you to discuss these matters during a special Learn(at)Lunch event with a new format on “EU Election 2014 countdown: One year to go” (= 30 minutes of data presentation + 30 minutes of exchange with the floor). At this occasion and to help answer these questions, Gallup will unveil the findings of its latest opinion poll conducted on these topics. The event will be held in Gallup’s premises on 5 June from 11.45 to 13.00 (see:coordinates & map).
