Is Europe on a path to 100% renewable electricity

by 2050?

In Spring 2010, PwC, the European Climate Forum, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and the International Institute for Applied System Analysis published an optimistic roadmap claiming 100% renewable electricity generation for Europe and North Africa is feasible by 2050.The roadmap identified five “enabling factors” necessary for renewables to become the dominating electricity generating platform: clear political leadership; a supportive market structure; the right investment climate; adequate planning and permitting for new infrastructure; and technological progress. Now, one year later, Europe’s focus is on budget deficits, saving the Euro, monitoring uprisings in the Middle East and leading NATO interventions in Libya. Moreover, the momentum for climate change and the energy revolution seems to have been left behind on the beaches of Cancun with little hope for serious progress in Durban.Based on a progress report after 12 months from the authors of the first study and funded by the Smart Energy for Europe Platform, the debate will answer the following questions: Has any progress really been made towards the 100% renewables roadmap in the last twelve months or have austerity cuts and the new potential “dash for gas” derailed the Renewables Roadmap? Will the political unrest in Northern Africa undermine investment plans for big European-African solar projects? Will new budget constraints lead to the reduction or even withdrawal of financial support measures for renewable electricity? And how have new fears of nuclear after Fukushima changed the outlook for renewables?Featuring:Gerard Reid, Managing Director, Clean Technology, Jefferies International LtdMartin Rocholl, Acting Managing Director of the Smart Energy for Europe Platform (SEFEP) Gus Schellekens, Director, Sustainability and Climate Change Team at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)Hans van Steen, Head of Unit, Regulatory Policy and Promotion of Renewable Energy, European CommissionLaszlo Varro, Head of Gas, Coal and Power Markets Division at the International Energy Agency (IEA) Moderated by Willy De Backer, Head of the Greening Europe Forum of Friends of EuropeFor more information visit our Event web page.
