Making sense of the Asian century:

Indonesia's ASEAN Priorities in 2011

Currently in the driving seat of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Indonesia is expected to set a new and dynamic agenda for ASEAN in 2011. As Asia’s leading and most influential regional organisation, ASEAN has taken significant strides in recent years in meeting its aims of economic integration, creating a frontier-free common market and protecting human rights. Further expansion is planned, with Timor Leste applying for ASEAN membership. Among several new initiatives are plans to set up an ASEAN Human Assistance Center to respond to natural disasters in Jakarta. ASEAN is also at a centre of an array of new regional architecture initiatives in Asia. In addition, as countries in North Africa and the Middle East move towards democracy, Indonesia can share its own experiences in transition from authoritarianism to democracy with the region. Featuring:Ngurah Swajaya, Chairman of ASEAN and Ambassador of Indonesia’s Permanent Representation to ASEAN Moderated by Shada Islam, Head of the Asia Programme of Friends of Europe
