Reducing Energy Consumption: A Priority for Europe

A Vision for Heating in Europe - 2020 and BeyondLunch debate in the European Parliament, hosted by MEP Silvia-Adriana Ticau

Meeting Europe’s ambitious climate objectives for 2020 and beyond is a major challenge for the buildings sector, which accounts for 30- 40% of energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Technological progress in the heating sector can contribute via substantial efficiency improvements, as well as the optimal combination of renewable and conventional sources of energy. In the framework of the European Union defining its Energy Strategy for 2011-2020, the European Heating Oil Association (Eurofuel) has developed a vision for a multi-energy approach to heating, using liquid fuels in conjunction with smart metering, with a view to achieving sustainable, secure and affordable energy supplies for Europe’s buildings by  2020 and beyond. This document will be launched on the occasion of the  2nd European Innovation Summit.Prof. Christian Küchen, the President of Eurofuel, will outline the main elements of the industry’s Vision 2020 during this lunch debate, kindly hosted by MEP Silvia-Adriana Ticau, who led the European Parliament’s work on energy performance of buildings. Marzena Rogalska, a member of EU Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger’s cabinet, will speak on the forthcoming Energy Strategy for Europe and the revised Energy Efficiency Action Plan.
