Rich countries are giving more in foreign aid than ever before. But which countries are the most generous? In 2016 more than $140bn was distributed around the world. According to the latest breakdown in 2015 America gave the most money away - nearly $31bn to at least 40 countries and organisations such as the world bank. This included $770m to Pakistan and $250m to Mexico. This may sound generous but the United States has the largest economy in the world. American foreign aid spending in 2015 was only 0.17% of the gross national income. Far less than other rich countries. Sweden and Norway are the biggest givers, donating over 1% of their gross national income to foreign aid. The biggest receivers of aid in 2015 were Afghanistan, India, Vietnam, Ethiopia and Indonesia. Afghanistan received $3.8bn and India $3.1bn. Despite being the second biggest economy in the world, China received $1.5bn in development aid in 2015. This included around $750m from Germany and $67m from Britain. The total amount of foreign aid is at an all time high - up 9% in 2016. This is largely down to the generosity of six countries who meet or exceed the United Nations foreign aid target, donating more than 0.7% of gross national income. The Violence domain ot the Gender Equality Index measures the extend of violence against women. For each EU country, and the EU as a whole, the Index provides a score from 1 to 100. Flavia Totoro, an artist, was arrested at a public demonstration in Spain in 2011, together with eight more demonstrators. She was charged with assaulting a police officer. On the day of the trial, Flavia was offered a deal: plead guilty with the whole group and the whole group would avoid jail. She was told by her lawyer that she either plead guilty or all the others accused would be at risk if being sentenced to imprisonment.

Director of the European Network on Statelessness (ENS) Chris Nash, explains why ENS started #LockedinLimbo campaign to protect some of the most vulnerable people from being locked in immigration detention. Stateless people are often deprived of their liberty simply because they don’t have a nationality. And once they are in detention they face being locked up for months and years because no country will accept them. ENS took the campaign to the Council of Europe to call on European states to put in place procedures to identify people without a nationality so that they don’t end up #LockedinLimbo. Human Rights Watch (HRW) says it has documented several cases of torture and enforced disappearances during the past year in Turkey. In a report published on Wednesday, it provides evidence of at least 11 cases of serious abuses in police detention in which detainees were beaten, stripped and threatened.

The Greek parliament has voted into law a bill allowing people to change their gender identity from the age of 15 without medical treatment. Of the 285 MPs present, 147 voted in favour of changing the law. The

A divisive debate is due to come to a head in Greece. Transgender people could soon be able to choose the sex the identify best with from the age of 15, if a bill proposed by the ruling Syriza Party is passed. The prime minister was scathing in his criticism of the opposition.
