Unfortunately, children are still victims of abuse and violence across Europe. Although it is difficult to assess the extent of violence against children and much of it remains hidden, existing estimates give cause for great concern. Violence against children can take various forms (physical, sexual or emotional abuse, or neglect) and can happen in numerous situations (at home or in the family, at school, within institutions responsible for childcare, or within the community). Supporting people with complicated lives and support needs
27 Jul 2018
European Network on ...
This webinar is about different ways of supporting people with complicated lives and support needs. Sam Sly speaks planning successfully for people who have been labelled by others as having challenging behaviour, but for whom the behaviour that really needs challenging is from the people and systems preventing them getting a good life. This planning - known as Life Planning - draws on the positives, strengths, hopes and dreams of the person and involves the people that know them best. Heather Rowell speaks about the development of Local Area Coordination in England and Wales, as a strength-based approach to wellbeing that reduces dependency and need for formal services and support. The focus is on building citizen led, welcoming, inclusive communities that are powered by the rich skills, gifts, experience and contribution of everyone (especially people who have been marginalised due to age, disability, mental health).

Loud and United to end violence against women and girls, European Women’s Lobby Conference, 6 December 2017, Brussels. Istanbul Convention: What Policies Transform Commitments into Reality? On 6 of December 2017, the European Women’s Lobby (EWL) organised a high level conference at the Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union. Taking place at a key political moment, the conference aimed to raise awareness on violence against women and girls and the significance of the Council of Europe Convention on Combatting and Preventing Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence, the Istanbul Convention. The conference brought together experts from the EWL Observatory on Violence Against Women and academics who highlighted the key challenges in combatting violence against women and girls and in the implementation of the Istanbul Convention. The event was also a key occasion to facilitate an exchange with key EU and Council of Europe decision makers and to give visibility to the important work of women’s organisations’ who consistently work to prevent and combat violence against women and girls. You can find a detailed article about the event following this link: https://www.womenlobby.org/Violence-against-women-is-not-abstract-and-women-are-speaking-out-loudly-about Violence against women exists, it is not abstract and women are speaking out about it. The Economist
Rich countries are giving more in foreign aid than ever before. But which countries are the most generous? Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.st/2AAzFCG Rich countries are giving away more in aid than at any other time on record. In 2016 more than $140bn was distributed around the world. According to the latest breakdown in 2015 America gave the most money away - nearly $31bn to at least 40 countries and organisations such as the world bank. This included $770m to Pakistan and $250m to Mexico. This may sound generous but the United States has the largest economy in the world. American foreign aid spending in 2015 was only 0.17% of the gross national income. Far less than other rich countries. Sweden and Norway are the biggest givers, donating over 1% of their gross national income to foreign aid. The biggest receivers of aid in 2015 were Afghanistan, India, Vietnam, Ethiopia and Indonesia. Afghanistan received $3.8bn and India $3.1bn. Despite being the second biggest economy in the world, China received $1.5bn in development aid in 2015. This included around $750m from Germany and $67m from Britain. The total amount of foreign aid is at an all time high - up 9% in 2016. This is largely down to the generosity of six countries who meet or exceed the United Nations foreign aid target, donating more than 0.7% of gross national income. Director of the European Network on Statelessness (ENS) Chris Nash, explains why ENS started #LockedinLimbo campaign to protect some of the most vulnerable people from being locked in immigration detention. Stateless people are often deprived of their liberty simply because they don’t have a nationality. And once they are in detention they face being locked up for months and years because no country will accept them. ENS took the campaign to the Council of Europe to call on European states to put in place procedures to identify people without a nationality so that they don’t end up #LockedinLimbo.
