Significant and long-lasting repercussions will be felt across society and industry, many of which are sure to influence the way we approach the design of our buildings and cities. As the UN Secretary General Mr. Antonio Guterres has stated, along with the great challenges to humanity, the COVID-19 pandemic represents an opportunity to re-think how regions, cities, neighbourhoods and buildings are being planned, designed and built. Policymakers and designers are now confronted with the need to both revisit the efficiency, effectiveness and equitability of present city forms and systems and redefine the tools available to sustainably support cites in their transition towards higher levels of resilience. European University ...
As a main partner in the FAIRsFAIR project, EUA organised this webinar to share and discuss the FAIRsFAIR policy and service recommendations for research data management at research organisations, as well as institutional good practices and the role of FAIR data within Horizon Europe. Universities and researchers across Europe are increasingly expected to manage research data according to the FAIR principles, most notably through Horizon Europe. Therefore, research data policies, support services, processes and infrastructure at higher education institutions need to be ready for FAIR data. Bottom-up and top-down measures must converge at the institutional level, making this a challenge of strategic relevance that encompasses different levels and stakeholders within a university. FAIRsFAIR, a European-level project funded through the European Open Science Cloud initiative, is at the forefront of developing recommendations and guidance documents on how to build and sustain research data management policies and services within research performing organisations. Schloss Kornberg was first mentioned in a document in 1284. It is located in southeastern Styria, in Austria. The area is one of the richest in fortressed castles in Europe, as for centuries Styria has represented a bridge between middle and southeastern Europe and played a major role as a bastion against invading people. These impressive fortifications, real architectural masterpieces, are scattered all around the border between Austria and Slovenia and today they together form the so-called Castle Road (Die Schlösserstrasse), a renowned tourist destination. The current owner and inhabitant of Schloss Kornberg is Count Andreas Bardeau, Honorary Consul of Romania in Graz. The castle belongs to his family since 1871. It is Count Bardeau himself who will personally open the doors of his splendid house to us.

EURASHE - European A...
Smart Specialisation Strategies (S3s) represent a unique opportunity for European regions to tackle societal and technological challenges, allowing their economies to adapt to the growing competitive environment. Bringing together all the relevant business, research and education, public actors and civil society – the quadruple helix – S3s help to identify the region’s own strengths and comparative assets, prioritise research and innovation investment in competitive areas, and define a shared vision for regional innovation. EURASHE, as the European representation of professional higher education institutions, strongly advocates the inclusion of Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) in the development and implementation of regional S3s. Through their profile as regional “boundary spanners” and their applied research, lifelong learning activities and development of new skills, UAS actively support and contribute to the competitiveness and innovation capacity of their regions. They, therefore, provide crucial input and experience in all the different phases of the design of S3: from developing a shared vision and identifying the regional priorities, to implementing the action plan and monitoring and evaluating the results achieved. The second webinar of the online event Smart UAS in Smart Regions, organised in collaboration with Friends of Smart Specialisation, looked at the case of the Basque Country, the autonomous community in northern Spain which presents one of the strongest Smart Specialisation Strategies in Europe. The case study for this session was presented by EURASHE member Mondragon University. More information: https://bit.ly/SmartUASinSmartRegions

Friday 13 November 2020 The theorising of African indigeneity in and of itself is challenging by virtue of the dominance of postmodern politics as an acceptable approach for Africans who are often seen as not Indigenous enough. The tensions become even more intense when the focus is diasporic or enslaved descendants; does these context render African indigeneity impossible or, simply non-existent? Possible questions to be addressed: What does it mean to be indigenous as an African ; Does the word “Indigeneity” the word Africans want to use? ; Is intrinsic culture carried in our beings due to forceful removals from our lands? Will tangible and intangible aspects of African indigeneity mean the built environment, sites, personal and symbolic meanings of regions or kinships within African cultural landscapes? Or is there more to it ; Do we reclaim Pan Africanism as a collective?

Palazzo Mondo, from the second half of the 18th century, is an example of stylistic transition between the rococo and the neoclassical taste of archaeological inspiration. The privately-owned building today houses the House Museum of the painter Domenico Mondo (1723-1806) who lived and worked here. The painter, trained in Naples in the workshop of the famous Francesco Solimena, lived in Capodrise until 1789, the year in which he was appointed, together with the neoclassical painter Wilhelm Tischbein, director of the Royal Drawing Academy in Naples. Architect Nicola Tartaglione virtually guides the visitor through the Rococo living room, frescoed on the walls and vault, the dining room, a room dedicated to the Vanvitellian projects for the Royal Palace of Caserta, a studio painted in yellow and decorated with Etruscan borders, a bedroom with walls painted in Pompeian red and antique edges and a small prayer room.

She coordinated the restoration of the museum including the digitisation of the inventory and the setting up of the permanent collection. In 2010, she took charge of the creation of the MiM mineral museum in Beirut of which she is currently the curator. Her presentation focused on the heritage protection experience gained by Lebanese professionals during the war, and how this was helpful in reacting promptly to the explosion. Elsa Urtizverea is the Heritage Protection Coordinator at ICOM since 2019. Her intervention during the webinar presented a report on ICOM mission to Lebanon, the collaboration with ALIPH and other parties, and the future role of ICOM in the rehabilitation efforts. The presentations were introduced by a welcome speech by Diana Pardue, chair of the IC Disaster Resilience for Museums, on behalf of the Committee. After the interventions of the speakers, Anette Hansen, chair of ICMS delivered a final reflection on the presentations and the role of ICMS. MODERATOR Hanna Pennock worked in several museums as a researcher, exhibition coordinator, and curator, after which she served as Inspector of the National collections in the country’s privatised State museums. For six years she was member of the Executive Council of ICOM, as well as Board member of ICOM’s International Committee on Museum Security. She is currently Senior Advisor and Project Manager at the Cultural Heritage Agency in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, and Chair of the ICOM Standing Committee for Disaster Risk Management.

Corroy-le-Château is a medieval castle situated in the province of Namur, Belgium. A major piece of heritage of Wallonia, the castle is a unique and exceptional example of fortification built at the end of the 13th century. The pentagonal-shaped building, with its four corner towers, features stunning interiors from the 18th and 19th century as well as many works of art. Corroy remains in a surprising state of preservation thanks to the continuity of its occupation. The visit is guided by the last owner and current inhabitant of the castle, the Marquis Olivier de Trazegnies.

ETUCE
On 19 November 2020, the Rome Ministerial Conference of the Bologna Process convened online gathering the education ministries of the 49 member countries and the stakeholders of the Bologna Process. ETUCE, as a consultative member within the Bologna Following Up Group, the governing body of the Bologna Process, participated took part in the meeting with a delegation led by Andreas Keller, ETUCE vice-president (GEW Germany). and joint by Rob Copeland, chair of the Higher Education and Research Committee (UCU-England); HERSC vice-chairs Annette Dolan (TUI-Ireland) and Alessandro Arienzo (FLC GIL-Italy), and from the ETUCE Secretariat Susan Flocken, European Director and Agnes Roman, Senior policy coordinator. As leading the ETUCE delegation, in his speech to the ministers Andreas Keller underlined that “Teachers are crucial actors in higher education, and they should be at the centre of the Bologna Process. Higher education academics and researchers need permanent works, job security, reliable career path, and quality continuous professional development. Indeed, it has to be clear that quality teaching is not possible without highly qualified and motivated higher education academics and research.” Furthermore, Andreas Keller recalled the ETUCE report which explains how privatisation and commercialization of higher education are undermining the quality and inclusiveness of the higher education systems. Likewise, he urged the ministers to protect academic freedom and to strengthen social dialogue with the education trade unions and collegial governance with staff to safeguard academic freedom: “Quality teaching requires freedom of expressing opinions. As representative of academics and researchers, ETUCE calls on the ministers to acknowledge the increasing threats against academic freedom in Europe which has been seriously being violated in Turkey, Hungary, and in Belarus”.

Smart UAS in Smart Regions. The case of Portugal
19 Nov 2020
The first webinar of the online event Smart UAS in Smart Regions, organised in collaboration with Friends of Smart Specialisation, looked at the case of Portugal and how Portuguese Polytechnics were engaged in the development of the national and regional S3s. From inadequate pandemic preparedness strategies to a collapse of international cooperation, European and global systems have struggled to cope with the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The World Health Organisation has seen shrinking resources limit its scope for action and leadership, raising questions about the effectiveness of international health governance structures. How can supranational institutions achieve sufficient credibility, legitimacy, authority, and accountability for effective leadership? How can the EU unify to develop a common vision for global health, and what should the priorities be. In this event, we present young Europeans’ takes on the future of health governance, with a particular focus on internal EU cooperation as well as its relationship to the World Health Organisation. Panel with Dr Beth Thompson, Head of UK and EU Policy at the Wellcome Trust, and Prof Stefan Elbe, Director of the Centre of Global Health at the University of Sussex. Casa Galibern, member of Monumenta and located in the historic center of Torroella de Montgrí, is the main house of the Mascort Foundation. It is a colonial-style house from the late 19th century. It was built by Ramon Galibern Casanovas (Torroella de Montgrí, 1817-1884), after his return from Southern Brazil, where he resided for several years serving as the Spanish Vice-Consul. Ramon Galibern Casanovas was the great-grandfather of Ramon Mascort Amigó, who is the current owner of Casa Galibern and President of the Mascort Foundation. Casa Galibern was opened as the Mascort Foundation main house in 2007, after having been restored and adapted to host the numerous exhibitions and activities that the Foundation organises and offers to visitors. The original content of the house is not preserved, since it was destroyed during the Civil War.

Authors: Florian Rampelt and Mike Bernd, Stifterverband, Germany Recognition and quality assurance of formal and non-formal open education, especially of MOOCs, has been a hot topic in recent years. Although the promise of massively opening up higher education has not yet been fulfilled, open and online learning scenarios play an increasing role in higher education, ever more since the Covid-19 crisis. The AI-Campus, a learning platform on artificial intelligence, is an R&D project funded by the German government. The platform published the first Open Educational Resource (OER) content in July 2020 and plans to develop more than 30 openly licenced courses and other OER content. For its collaboration with more than 20 higher education institutions in Germany and Luxembourg, AI Campus developed quality assurance standards, including formal aspects, pedagogy and OER licensing. This presentation will reflect on the experiences gained from this process and thus contribute to the overall discussion on the co-creation of academic quality assurance standards amongst higher education stakeholders providing OER content on digital learning platforms. The discussions on innovative and flexible learning, its relevance and focus on students from various target groups have brought a growing attention to the instrument of Recognition of Prior Learning – hereafter RPL – as a means for enhancing the access to higher education, ensure the flexibility of its provision, and reflecting on the changing higher education landscape. Following the many challenges brought by the recent pandemic, RPL could also prove to be a crucial asset in ensuring a more inclusive access to further studies and promoting lifelong learning opportunities. EURASHE, together with the Swedish Council for Higher Education and its partners of the RPLip project, is organising the online event “Recognition of Prior Learning in higher education” in the months of October and November 2020, presenting the outcomes of the project and offering a platform to further develop the discussion around quality assured and consistent processes to recognise non-formal and informal learning throughout Europe. The second webinar “How to validate and recognize prior informal and non-formal learning” took place on Thursday 5 November 2020, 14:30-16:00 CET and provided hands-on strategies to go through the validation process at the institutional level, with concrete examples from higher education institutions.

Coordinated by Scholars at Risk Europe at Maynooth University in Ireland, the project facilitates transnational cooperation between European and national initiatives and programmes in support of researchers at risk. As part of the project, EUA conducted a mapping to identify the support structures and measures available to researchers at risk, both at European higher education institutions and other host organisations, as well as at the national and European level. The mapping also identified 0. 0. 0. specific challenges faced by researchers at risk, as well as by the organisations that host and support them. NEMO - Network of Eu...
On 2 October 2020, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth participated in a NEMO Political Internship at the Children’s Science Centre Muzeiko in Sofia, Bulgaria. Commissioner Mariya Gabriel was very pleased with the experience and found the opportunity to have been a privilege and a great reminder of how science is essential in helping children develop key life skills. During the internship, the Commissioner got to experience different kinds of museum work that all contribute to lifelong learning and development. She also got unique insights into museum operations during a pandemic, including the new routines that are in place to ensure a safe museum visit. Each NEMO internship is tailored in accordance with the participant’s field and interest. Considering the Commissioner’s portfolio of Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Muzeiko was a natural choice. Afterall, the science centre brings together all of these sectors and shows how they can benefit from each other to create something impactful and valuable to society. NEMO Webinar | Maria Vlachou | Dealing with the discomfort of a multicoloured world
2 Nov 2020
NEMO - Network of Eu...
In this NEMO Webinar, you will learn how to face ambiguity and complexity with curiosity and joy. You will also be inspired to take on complex matters and help people make sense of them. In recent years, many (most?) people are looking for simple black or white answers and wish to avoid the discomfort of a multicoloured world. This is because our multicoloured world is full of nuances, becomes complex and cannot always provide simple answers. Our multicoloured world expects us to invest more in getting properly informed and dealing with this complexity. Populists are aware of these “human issues” and base their strategies on few and simple slogans, making things look “easy” and contributing towards an extreme polarisation. In an interview in July 2020, amid intense antiracist protests in the US, the Smithsonian secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III said that we need to help our visitors feel comfortable with nuance and complexity. He later challenged us further: “How do you help your audience embrace ambiguity? Help them be comfortable with debate and not just look for simple answers? Help them deal with complexity and shades of grey?” We propose the vision of the multicoloured world, instead of the shades of grey, wishing to bring a positive note and help ourselves and other people face ambiguity and complexity with curiosity and joy. There is pleasure to be found in discovering that the world is much more colourful and nuanced than we might think; and this is not a threat. Maria Vlachou is a Cultural Management and Communications consultant. Founding member and Executive Director of Acesso Cultura, promoting access – physical, social, intellectual – to cultural participation. Author of the bilingual (pt/en) blog Musing on Culture, where she writes about culture, the arts, museums, cultural management and communication, access. She is the manager of the Facebook group Museum texts / Textos em museus and co-manager of the blog Museums and Migration. She is currently participating in the European project RESHAPE – Reflect, Share, Practice, Experiment, having joined the trajectory on “Arts and Citizenship”. In the past, she was Communications Director of São Luiz Municipal Theatre and Head of Communication of Pavilion of Knowledge – Ciência Viva (Lisbon). Board member of ICOM Portugal (2005-2014) and editor of its bulletin. She has collaborated with different programmes of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Youth Knowledge Break #7 - Youth research and young people
29 Oct 2020
EU-CoE youth partnership
Youth research is essential for youth policy and youth work to thrive and have an impact. The good cooperation of practitioners, policy-makers and researchers can make young people's lives better - but young people have been part of this process too. Youth research is about young people and for young people, but it can also happen with their involvement. Cooperation of youth research and young people benefits both, opens opportunities and brings positive change to the youth field and to the lives of young people. #Youth Knowledge Break is a series of online conversations with researchers, practitioners, policy-makers and young people, on importance and role of knowledge and research in the youth field, tackling the following questions: ? Should research shape decision-making? ? How is knowledge on youth developed and used for policy development, implementation and evaluation? ? How does it support youth work practice or young people themselves in taking informed decisions affecting their lives and their communities? ? What type of knowledge is needed for the 21st century?

Bologna Process webinar #4: Micro-credentials as a way to enhance learning and teaching in the EHEA
28 Oct 2020
European University ...
In response to the societal changes, learning is expected to become more flexible with students being able to choose the pace, place and mode of learning. Micro-credentials are one way to provide this flexibility. They can be a means to increase the effectiveness of higher education and to provide upskilling and reskilling opportunities for the labour force. This EUA webinar, which is part of the series “Towards the Bologna Process Ministerial Meeting”, discussed micro-credentials from various perspectives. It included the key findings of an EUA study conducted as part of the MICROBOL project, which examines the status of micro-credentials and the applicability and use of Bologna Process tools; the outcomes of the European Commission’s Micro-credentials Consultation Group; and a university perspective on flexible learning and specifically on micro-credentials.
