Eurelectric
What came out of the fireside chat is a clear message: the future is electric, and it’s collaborative. As #EVs adoption accelerates across #Europe, charging demand on the #energy grid is rising fast. The good news? This demand is controllable, manageable, and highly compatible with renewable energy. In this discussion, we explore how smart charging, on-site batteries, vehicle-to-grid (#V2G), and flexible electricity use are already taking shape. From charging stations that store and release energy, to #fleets working hand in hand with grid operators, electrification of transport is no longer a question of if, but how fast. Solving the remaining challenges means cutting red tape, working closely with regulators, and unlocking grid capacity, recognising that even if power isn’t available all day, partial availability can still make #electrification work. Confidence is growing, solutions are emerging, and cooperation between industries is the key to scaling electric mobility sustainably across Europe. #ElectricMobility #Electrification #EVCharging #EnergyTransition #SmartGrids #RenewableEnergy #VehicleToGrid #EVInfrastructure #CleanTransport #EuropeEnergy

What happens when you combine the heart of a non-profit with the engine of a successful business? This podcast unpacks the ‘cycle of impact’ within Armenia’s growing social entrepreneurship ecosystem. Featuring EU4Youth Alumni, Ani Yuzbashyan (AgroSyunik) and Suren Mkhitaryan (CODE SE HUB), we explore how the EU4Youth initiative—the European Union’s €50 million flagship program—has bridged the gap between a ‘good idea’ and a ‘sustainable solution.’ From hydroponic farming in Syunik to digital transformation in local communities, Suren and Ani share how EU support provides the skills, mentoring, and grants necessary to turn social challenges into viable career paths and economic opportunities for young Armenians. Beyond just funding, this discussion highlights the lasting legacy of the EU’s investment in youth. We dive into why creating sustainable infrastructure matters more than one-time donations, demonstrating how young leaders are building self-sufficient systems that continue to grow, create jobs, and foster resilience long after the initial project phase. Whether you're an aspiring entrepreneur or curious about the future of Armenia’s economy, join us to see how the next generation is turning active citizenship into a professional reality. #EU4Youth #SocialEntrepreneurship #Armenia #YouthEmpowerment #SustainableBusiness #EUinArmenia #Innovation #ImpactThatLasts @LratvakanRadio @businessfmarmenia @EUArmenia

In this video, Andrea Giraldo Sevilla, Cléa Montanari and Muki Haklay explain how the Citizen Science Competency Framework was developed. The framework was created by bringing together and adapting elements from existing competency frameworks, including the European Competence Framework for Researchers (ResearchComp) and by engaging 160 participants through an adapted Delphi method. This process helped tailor the framework to the specific needs of participatory research and citizen science. The Citizen Science Competency Framework highlights the skills, attitudes, knowledge and values that characterise researchers working in participatory research and citizen science. The session introduces the development process, explains how to read and use the framework and explores how it relates to ResearchComp, followed by a discussion with participants.

🔴 We also announced with this communication regulatory deep cleaning action plan where we are looking at 12 policy areas as a priority to assess the rules in those areas to eliminate inconsistencies, overlaps, unnecessary complexity, so in a sense prioritising certain things for this year and next. 🟠 And finally also addressing the question of gold plating because one thing is regulation we are setting at the EU level but often what we see that member states are then coming on top of this with even more stringent requirements and doing this inconsistently across 27 member states ends up with fragmentation with barriers to the Single Market. 🟡 So we want also to streamline this by choice of legislative instruments. So focusing more on regulations which are directly applicable so there's no scope for interpretation by member states or some harmonisation directives instead of minimal harmonisation, but also working with member states to address gold plating where we are seeing it and also stepping up enforcement against member states if we see that gold plating are contrary to the EU law. 🗣️ Valdis Dombrovskis in conversation with Jeromin Zettelmeyer, Anne Bucher and host Rebecca Christie.

Our astronaut Sophie Adenot shared this video on her social media channels with the caption: [EN] Day 091, orbit 1410 — In this timelapse, I’m first setting up and then carrying out a technology demonstration called Intravenous Fluid Generation – Mini. It explores how the Station’s supply of potable water could be used to produce medical‑grade intravenous fluids, such as saline solutions. Being able to produce IV fluids in space would reduce our reliance on cargo missions and prevent the issue of expired medical supplies during long‑duration exploration missions. One of many examples of the key role the Station plays in inventing the future of space exploration! The large piece of equipment I’m working in is a sealed laboratory workspace, the Life Science Glovebox, located in the Japanese Kibo module. And if you’re wondering why I’m “tethered” for this experiment… The black one is an antistatic grounding strap. It’s connected to a metal surface and helps keep our body electrically neutral (more on static electricity soon!). The white one is the radio connecting me to POIC Huntsville, who guided me through this experiment. Congrats Huntsville! Congrats IVGEN teams, especially Alex M., Alex S., Brian, Courtney, John, Kimesha, Moriah, Nathan, Robert, and Toni! When you think of mediators in international conflicts, countries like Qatar often get overlooked—they've played a pivotal role for decades. But as traditional UN and European diplomacy wanes, a new wave of middle powers is stepping into the spotlight, transforming the global peace landscape in unexpected ways. Are these emerging mediators truly driven by altruism, or is there a darker side to their involvement? In this provocative episode, we challenge the common narrative, revealing how middle powers like Turkey, the Gulf states, and Egypt are not only mediating peace but also wielding military force as part of their strategic toolkit. From Sudan to Libya and Syria, these nations are navigating the fine line between peacemaking and war-making—sometimes blurring the lines we prefer not to see. You'll discover: how these countries leverage diplomacy alongside military might, the true motives behind their involvement in conflicts, and the risky implications for international stability. We break down the often-overlooked power dynamics shaping the Middle East and Horn of Africa—areas where conflict and cooperation are intertwined in complex ways. Ignoring this reality could mean missing crucial shifts in global influence, while understanding it opens the door to smarter, more effective diplomacy. Whether you're a policy thinker, a student of international relations, or simply curious about the forces shaping our world, this episode exposes the hidden strategies of middle powers wielding both peace and war. Emerging mediators are redefining what it means to influence global peace—and understanding their role could be the key to predicting future conflicts and opportunities alike. Before Smile can begin studying how Earth responds to the streams of particles and bursts of radiation from the Sun, the spacecraft had to complete an extraordinary journey here on Earth. Follow the mission through its final launch preparations at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, from fuelling and encapsulation inside its protective fairing, to meeting the rest of the Vega-C rocket that will take it to space. Smile is flying to space on Vega-C flight VV29. At 35 m tall, Vega-C weighs 210 tonnes on the launch pad and the rocket will take Smile to orbit with three solid-propellant-powered stages before the fourth liquid-propellant stage takes over for a precise drop-off around Earth. Smile (the Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer) is a joint European-Chinese mission to study the interaction between the solar wind and Earth’s magnetic environment from a unique highly elliptical orbit. During the next three years, it will go high above the North Pole every two days to collect X-ray and ultraviolet images of Earth’s magnetic shield and the northern lights. Just after the nazi-fascist dictatorships and the catastrophic events of WWII, a bold idea took shape: to create a united Europe, we need to create a European identity; not only through politics and economics, but also through culture and education, through a common European university. To mark the EUI's 50th anniversary, students from Liceo Artistico di Firenze created four mural proposals celebrating European values. One of these designs was selected and unveiled during the anniversary celebrations in Palazzo Buontalenti. This behind-the-scenes video documents the creative process that brought the mural to life, following the students from the first sketches to the final artwork. The mural will later be moved to a final public space in the city of Florence.

President Sergio Mattarella visits the EUI for its 50th anniversary celebrations

EUI TV
The EUI welcomed President Mattarella at Palazzo Buontalenti, home to the Florence School of Transnational Governance (STG), where the Institute trains future leaders. The visit marked a significant moment in the EUI’s anniversary year, celebrating five decades of academic excellence and research for Europe. This is President Mattarella’s second visit to the EUI, following his visit in 2018, and his first time in Palazzo Buontalenti, which has hosted the STG since 2021. Welcoming Sergio Mattarella, EUI President Patrizia Nanz highlighted the importance of the occasion and the longstanding relationship between Italy and the Institute: “We are honoured to welcome President Mattarella to the European University Institute on the occasion of our 50th anniversary. His visit reflects the deep bond between Italy and the EUI and represents an important recognition of the Institute’s role in educating future European generations. We are profoundly grateful to Italy for the constant support it has provided to the EUI since its foundation.” During the visit, President Mattarella toured Palazzo Buontalenti, a historic state-owned property entrusted to the Institute by the Italian State Property Agency Demanio. The restoration and continued redevelopment of the Palazzo reaffirm its role as a place dedicated to knowledge, education, and student life, while strengthening the EUI’s connection with the city of Florence and the wider local community. The Institute’s engagement with schools and citizens has also been further supported through the contribution of Fondazione CR Firenze. The visit also coincided with the opening of new exhibition spaces within Palazzo Buontalenti. The exhibition OPEN, hosted in a newly accessible wing of the former Medici Casino, brings together works by six contemporary artists exploring the relationship between art and science. The exhibition will run until 12 October 2026.

Germany’s Zeitenwende and the Future of the European Security Architecture
Germany’s Zeitenwende and the Future of the European Security Architecture
Yesterday
IIEA
In light of an increasingly volatile world order, the future of the European security architecture is back on the agenda and seems more pressing than at any point in recent history. After decades of reduced military spending across Europe, recent developments from Ukraine, over Greenland and from the Middle East as well as the rifts in the Transatlantic partnership have prompted European states to reassess their own vulnerabilities and defence capabilities. Germany’s ambition to modernise its Armed Forces and to fully implement the so-called Zeitenwende can be described as the centrepiece of the efforts currently undertaken by governments inside and outside of the European Union. What is the German perspective on the future of the European security architecture? Which measures could and should be taken at EU level to complement national efforts? How can Europe position itself effectively in a “world on fire” and which role can militarily neutral states such as Ireland play in the bigger picture of European security? Roderich Kiesewetter has been Member of the German Bundestag since 2009 and is a former General Staff Officer of the Bundeswehr (Colonel GS, Federal Armed Forces). He currently serves on the Committee on Foreign Affairs. He is also a Substitute Member of the Subcommittee on Arms Control and Proliferation Control, Non-Proliferation, and International Disarmament as well as the Subcommittee on Crisis Prevention, Strategic Foresight, Stabilization, and Peacebuilding. Furthermore, he is the Vice-Chair of the Working Group on Foreign Relations of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group. As one of the CDU’s most outspoken experts on security and defence policy, he is regularly quoted in newspapers and on national television. This event has been organised in conjunction with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung UK and Ireland.

This week we travelled to the Western Balkans. The next wave of EU enlargement. The European Investment Bank is the investment engine for EU accession and in Montenegro, we had very good exchanges with President Milatović and Prime Minister Spajić on how to step up our support in achieving their ambitious goal to be the 28th member state by 2028. We also signed new financing in the areas of health, transport and support to small and medium-sized companies. We visited a vocational training school in the hospitality sector. It was a great opportunity to see the positive impact of our work on the ground. In Albania we had very good exchanges with Prime Minister Rama, taking stock of the progress they are making towards EU membership. We also had the chance to visit some of the businesses that have received EIB financing. Elsewhere, we inaugurated an administrative support centre and a health centre in Ukraine We announced support for affordable medicines, for ultrafast broadband, and modernisation of businesses. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep the global average temperature rise this century as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. Europe remains one of the safest regions for journalists. Yet, as Renate Schroeder, Director of EFJ, has pointed out, the situation has steadily worsened since 2016, with more attacks on independent media, growing pressure on journalists, and increasing political smear campaigns. Against this backdrop, key questions emerge around the role of the EU's European Media Freedom Act and the EU's position in addressing platform dominance. We’ll explore these topics with her at #GMFTalk. Renate has been with EFJ since 1993, leading advocacy at EU and Council of Europe level, representing the organization internationally, and contributing to expert groups, missions and juries. ❗ The Russian army is hunting people in Kherson, a major city in the southern part of Ukraine. It is estimated that 700 Russian drones attack Kherson region every day. Russian soldiers are targeting Ukrainian civilians, their cars, and their homes, as if they were on a safari. On the occupied lands of the Kherson region, on the left bank of the Dnipro River, the situation is even worse. There, the Russian army is implementing the tactics of a 'drone blockade.' People cannot leave their villages, they cannot buy food, and they cannot even bury their dead. The situation is catastrophic, and Russia is continuously breaking international humanitarian law. These people must be rescued urgently. You’re listening to the Explaining Ukraine podcast. *** Explaining Ukraine is brought to you by UkraineWorld, an English-language media outlet run by Internews Ukraine. Host: Volodymyr Yermolenko, a Ukrainian philosopher, Chief Editor of UkraineWorld, and President of PEN Ukraine. Guest: Zarina Zabrisky, an American journalist and writer who now lives in Kherson. But the question is, how can the continent turn this challenge into a strategic advantage? We explore Europe's unique chance to forge new alliances with middle powers and emerging economies threatened by low-cost Chinese imports. Rather than compete unfairly, Europeans can lead through technology transfer, investments, and industrial collaboration—especially in green tech—to combat climate change and secure economic strength. We’re at @adas.uk High Mowthorpe looking at Campus, a highly susceptible OSR variety, where disease pressure is high and symptoms are now clear across the trial. Untreated plots are showing up to 100% incidence, but so far fungicide programmes are reducing visible severity by around half.

From steam trains swapping coal for wood as they crossed America, to today’s cars relying on oil flowing through the Strait of #Hormuz, our relationship with #energy has always shaped security, cost and freedom. The problem with the petrol car isn’t just emissions, it’s dependence. By contrast, #electricity can be generated from almost anything: wind, solar, tidal, nuclear, hydrogen and more. Electrify transport and you unlock flexibility, resilience and choice. What we haven’t explained clearly enough is just how extraordinarily efficient electric motors really are. An electric motor converts around 80–90% of energy into motion. A petrol engine manages barely 20–25%, with most of the rest lost as heat, which is why snow stays on the bonnet of an electric car, while it melts off a petrol one after a short drive. We’re bad at comparing kilowatt hours with litres of fuel, so the advantage gets lost. In reality, electric vehicles turn energy into mobility four or five times more efficiently. This isn’t about hair‑shirt sacrifice to meet #netzero targets. In the medium to long term, electrifying everything and using power intelligently offers the promise of abundant, ultra‑cheap energy. In cities, especially, we don’t need heavy, noisy machines built for motorways. We need small, clean, quiet electric vehicles that move us around at 20 mph, are easy to park, and use energy with exceptional efficiency. That’s not a burden. That’s progress. #EnergySecurity #ElectricVehicles #Electrification #EVEfficiency #NetZero #CleanEnergy #UrbanMobility #FutureTransport

#EVision26 highlighted a key message: progress toward zero‑emission vehicles depends on strong partnerships. Through engaging panel discussions and informal exchanges between sessions and coffee breaks, participants were able to openly connect, share perspectives, and explore how collaboration across the industry can accelerate change. Beyond the official program, conversations among partners proved essential in addressing real‑world challenges and identifying practical ways to move zero‑emission transport forward. These interactions underscored how collective effort is just as important as #technology in driving the transition. Looking ahead to 2027, there is a shared ambition to see expanded infrastructure, more zero‑emission products available, and simplified permitting processes. Together, these developments could pave the way for a significant increase in electric trucks on the roads. #ZeroEmission #ElectricTrucks #CleanTransport #SustainableMobility #EVInfrastructure #GreenTransition #TransportDecarbonisation #IndustryPartnerships #ClimateAction #FutureOfMobility

In this episode of The Sound of Economics, host Rebecca Christie speaks with European Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis, Bruegel Director Jeromin Zettelmeyer and research fellow Anne Bucher about how to make the European Union work better. Ukraine, Bruegel’s newest state member, will soon receive more financial support but needs Europe to keep up its sanctions on Russia. How will the enlargement process shape relations between Kyiv and its neighbours? Closer to home, how should the Brussels institutions tackle simplification and deregulation? Can the European Commission do a better job with impact assessments to manage the costs and trade-offs of its policies? Does the EU need tougher enforcement against national gold-plating? As member states and the European Parliament put their stamp on, and add complexity to, new legislation, policymakers must find the political will to make the system work. The Decolonising and Diversifying the Curriculum Webinar brings together research-led insights and showcases practical, evidence-informed approaches to diversifying the economics curriculum. It consists of 2 parts. The 1st part is delivered by Dr Yaprak Tavman (University of York). The presentation explores a student-staff partnership project that developed evidence-based resources to support the diversification and decolonisation of the economics curriculum. Drawing on 15 semi-structured student interviews, the project examines how students understand these concepts, what barriers to implementation exist, and which practical changes they see as most meaningful. The session presents key findings on conceptual clarity, belonging and agency, implementation challenges, and mechanisms for change for different module types. It discusses how student partnership can generate actionable, sustainable tools for inclusive curriculum development in economics and offers a transferable model. The 2nd part is delivered by Dr Dunli Li (UCL). The presentation provides a practical example of how a 1st-year economics module was diversified, drawing on evidence from a wider curriculum diversity check as background. It begins by briefly outlining the review process and its findings on authorship and perspectives within the BSc Economics curriculum. The presentation then shows how these insights informed concrete changes to a first-year module, including revisions to reading lists, teaching materials, and assessment design. It concludes by emphasising that while diversifying a single first- year module is an important starting point, meaningful impact requires extending these efforts across more modules, alongside complementary actions to increase exposure to diverse role models, foster inclusive learning environments and strengthen long-term pathways along the economics pipeline for underrepresented groups.

Europe's postal services are under threat. 1.8 million posties could lose their jobs. And we won't be able to send and receive mail at affordable prices anymore. Currently, private companies like Amazon use the post's universal service to every address to cover unprofitable routes in rural areas. But they don't contribute fairly to funding the public network. The upcoming EU Delivery Act could change that. If it doesn't, all of us will lose access to an essential service – forever.
