The case for a common European refugee policy

In recent years, wars and conflict in the Middle East and sub-Saharan African countries have led an unprecedented number of refugees to come to Europe. In 2015, the number of first- time asylum applicants exceeded 1.2 million, compared to about half a million the previous year.
